When i was a child, i enjoyed going to the zoo to see the different animals. I am very thankful because animals born in the wild could be seen even by ordinary people by just going to those zoos at an entrance fee everyone can afford. I know that some animal advocates want those animals just out there in the wild. But, given the proper care, those animals in the zoo can also give happiness to people who in their whole life will never have the chance of those animals that can only be seen in jungles. It's educational . As long as they are well taken cared of and give wide spaces at the zoo, i do agree in one or two of each kind of them be kept at the zoo.

Me personally I love the zoo, just this weekend I took my children, luckily we purchased the annual pass at a reasonable price for the (4) of us, so we get to go unlimited for the rest of the year. But my children love it. I do agree, if animals are well maintained and given the proper care and space required for animals that normally live in the wild, I don't see what harm it does to the animal. The zoo that we have by our house is huge and the animals have a tremendous amount of space. Some of them have been there for a while, so you can tell that they have adapted and are used to having people around them.

You have a zoo by your house ? Does this mean the zoo is near your place or it's yours, in your compound?

We a zoo near our house, within our neighborhood, it's maybe about 10 miles away from our home and my children love it. We try to go atleast once a year, they are currently doing renovations and are expected to be completed by Fall of this year, which will be even more fun for the children. I am so looking forward to it.

Well, Manila Zoo was the other day in the news. I just hope the president should also give a special attention to the concern. I haven't seen Malabon Zoo yet. Which one is nicer , Manila or Malabon Zoo?

Malabon Zoo you can see many animals that you don't see in Manila Zoo plus it is well maintained the place and the animals. Avilon Zoo is bigger than Manila Zoo you can see different reptiles, amphibians and animals there we enjoyed the place much if you have enough budget you can get a tour guide

well, I do not think it's a good idea to keep animals in zoos. Mnay years ago, zoos had only iron fences and cages in which every type of animal suffered a miserable life. Currently, most zoos have more conditions and implements to keep animals more comfortable and easy. But I do not think that's the only thing animals will enjoy. They should enjoy as much freedom as we humans do. I don't think humans have any right to keep animals behind bars and being observed, and I don't think humans have any more right to keep some animals in cages just becoz they are "Dangerous. I think God creates so many different kinds of creatures not to let some take control over others, but to let them share the planet. well, that's what I think.

And I think that's something Petofi Sandor said:"Freedom is the most precious thing"? Can't remember clearly.

Yes, that's correct . But setting them free in the wilds isn't a guarantee that they will not be killed by those hunters, or could go hungry when the wilds have fiercer and bigger animals that can battle for their foods. Those zoos , doesn't entirely get a lot of each kind . They only get one or two , for children to see them and identify them from the pictures . The zoos just have to feed and take care of them well and put them in big cages where they can at least go around as their exercise.

Yes, those zoos served their purpose of educating and entertaining us when we were kids. We also have taken our daughter to it when she was still a kid. It was her first time to see some real fierce and big animals , she only see from her books. So, this zoos should be maintained well, so that the animals can grow and live comfortably, and will be there for the next generations to see.

Hi Simplyd, I totally agree with you. Sometimes i feel animals are jailed in zoos for human sake. They have to be free at the forests. But as long as they given proper care and made home like feel, then its happy for them and us to watch.

Yes. Those keepers in the zoo will of course take good care of them because they have been under their care for the past years. They have loved them as if members of their family. So, it's just up for the government and other foundations to solicit help to make better , the zoo.

Hi! Just like you, I really enjoy going to zoos. I love to see the animals. But what I would really want is to give the animals bigger space as I noticed some of them are too big for their little places. I am not disagreeing with taking care of them at zoos. Why? Because many people would just kill them in the wild. To avoid their extinction, I think it would be better if we take care of them in zoos and I think what would be even better is to provide a really huge wild life like place for them but is very secured to make sure no human can hurt them. Happy mylotting!

I agree. Their cages are too small. But, I think you are expecting too much from the zoos. They just don't have the money. Each of those animals costs the zoos thousands of dollars. And, the food bills alone are astronomical. They also would love to have more space for their furry friends. But it can't be done without making the entry fee unreasonably high. The government can't pay for everything. Don't forget, they are already 14 trillion dollars in debt.

Well I am not expecting too much from them. But what I want is to increase the awareness of humans that animals should be allowed to live in peace. Otherwise, it is also us that will suffer. In what way? Some may say. The imbalance of our ecosystem could really hurt us badly, and if all animals are gone, what will be left for us to eat and use for our needs? None right? To what will we turn to? To our fellow humans. Some might find this ridiculous, but this is what will happen if we don't take care of our nature and our neighbors here on earth. Everybody must help.

That's true. Perhaps the government could find a bigger and better place for those animals. They could also raise the entrance fee to cover for the renovation or whatever. Or perhaps they could look for donations from rich people or organizations. Animals have the right to live comfortably too, and comfortable means, being able to a have a nice space where they can roam around well.

Hi SimplyD! I haven't been in a zoo but I've seen pictures of the animals and the cages they live in. I would have to agree with the animal advocates saying that these animals are deprived of their natural habitat. Zoos are great, I agree there, because they are educational and children can learn a lot from there as well as adult but zoos should be as accommodating and as natural as it can for the animals to live healthily and happily. I think it's an abuse if we deprive them of that. Just like people, if you are placed in a place which is not your natural habitat would you be comfortable? So I think it's really best if the zoos can be made like a forest or a jungle so that the animals can live happily there.

well, that's correct too. Maybe the government should also give special attention to those animals in the zoo. Perhaps they could group animals that could go along well and make the zoo a forest-like habitat for them.

Dear friend, I feel those animals in zoo would be difficult for people to see in jungles, moreover it would be dangerous too. If those zoo animals are cared well and zoo maintained well I feel these animals would be much better than jungle in zoo. Moreover these animals would be well cared with proper food, medicine and other needful things. But the most problems would be on the environment and climate that is needed to suit these zoo animals. May be the zoo authorities care them with artificial or they would have found any other remedy for helping climate adjustment for those animals in zoo.

Give the proper funding those zoos could be turned into jungle-like habitat, yet people could take a look at them, without being harmed. Animals at the zoo could be well taken cared of and be fed regularly, while those in the wilds could really be endangered by a lot of factors. Hence, it is also good that a pair or two of each animals are in zoos, so that when a certain specie is endangered in the wild, then there will be others left at the zoo for people to see.

I have read in the new that Manila Zoo might be closed. It is a bit sad because i was also able to go there when i was a kid! And i am proud to say i was able to see a ZEBRA for real! lol plus the elephants and those big snakes! It was surreal for me that time hahaha and was even wanting to take the children there. But i guess the management lacked on their part. They could have maintained the zoo, like make it nicer, add more attractions to create more income so they could maintain the health of the animals and the cleanliness of the area! I hope they will still keep the zoo. I am also aware that there are animal advocates that does not want the animals to be in the zoo because they find it cruel but i believe they are not cruel unless they abuse the animals like those in the circus. It is even educational for children since children will learn what these animals are like and how to respect these animals.

Yes, when we were children we were brought by our parents to see those animals in the zoo. So, when we had our children, we also see to it that they are brought there also to see the animals. I just hope , P-Noy will do something good about Manila Zoo. It has been a legazy for us to bring our children to the zoo.

I quite agree with you. Yes, animals would have a way better and natural life for them in the wild. BUT there are many endangered species who are hunted for their fur, meat or other body parts. If these species wouldn't have been saved and brought to the zoos, they would have been gone by now. And yes, some zoos have very good conditions for animals to live in, they have enough room to run around freely, good surroundings (trees, plants, hiding places, toys) and they are also very well fed. So zoos aren't in my opinion as scary as some animal advocates say. Of course there are some zoos where conditions are very poor, so those should be given an increased funding to improve the conditions for animals who live there.

I see nothing wrong with zoo's. I have been to the zoo as a child myself and with my own children. I enjoyed more as a child though, I guess I had more energy. But it is enjoyable to see my children enjoy the zoo. I think they do take good care of those animals.

That's true. As long as the zoo keepers can take care of all those animals well, then there's nothing wrong for the animals to be there. The zoo can really be an educational means to our children and they will enjoy going to them, just as we have enjoyed when we were children.

I loved visiting the zoo as a kid. But when I think of it now, it feels like forever since I last set foot in a zoo. Anyway, oh I remember visiting an amusement park and touring around the "zoo". Well i don't know if it's a zoo but there's this huge park with tigers and lions and bears around and we had to tour in a bus. It was so amazing, they were just out there and free!!

Maybe it is a wildlife park, like the one we have here in our place. The animals are not caged entirely. They were keep in open cages where the sky is open and they have a shelter where they can stay when it rains. It has some plants and trees around . They are well fed too. That's how all zoos should be, actually.

Fanatic animal right advocates could be too "passionate" about their call. It is true that animals should be released to their natural habitat, but I agree that having them caged in the zoo could also help people. Let us just make it a point to always have them in a wide cage and must be treated with care and nourishment.

That's right sophiecheer. They just have to be placed in wide cages , well fed and taken cared of , and they are okay. In addition, the visitors should also be taught in helping make their cages clean by not throwing anything at the animals to attract their attention.

I agree with you. I am a huge animal lover, and of course I would much prefer to see animals in the wild in their natural habitat. But there is definitely a role for animals in captivity - they are invaluable for education and as you say, if there were no zoos at all then people would not be able to ever see the large majority of animals in the world. Also, there are some animals who are endangered in the wild, and living in captivity can give them some chance to breed and survive. But it is of utmost importance that these animals are treated well, in enclosures that are big enough for them, and are given the right food and habitat to live in.

Yes, keeping a pair or two of the different animals, ensure us that should their specie will be endangered of extinction, we still have some of them in our zoos. It's just that, their cages should be big enough for them to roam as if in the wild.

When I was a kid I also enjoyed Manila Zoo ! Looking at animals i have never seen before. I really didn't know and i wasn't aware at that time that keeping them in the zoo have some adverse effect on the animals. But now i am aware of it. Yes it's nice to keep those animals in the zoo in the perspective of the people who enjoys going there but i hope that the zoo would be able to take care of them and give them proper homes. When my son was 2 years old i brought him there and i was very disappointed with how the animals are living in Manila zoo. There are some wildlife zoos in our country where the animals are not put in cages but rather they are made to roam around in a vast land that gives them a proper home. I would rather go those places rather than the zoo where they are confined in cages.

Yes, Toni , we have a place like that in Palawan. My husband said, when he was assigned there for a year, the animals are there running and grazing in a vast farmland. That should be how it will be in a zoo. I hope with the news today about Manila Zoo, depicted as not taking care of their animals, the government should also give some budget and needed attention, to maintain them. At least the next generation could take a look at those animals that are not normally found here in the Philippines.
