hair cuts

I've never been to a salon or anywhere to have my hair cut. I always cut my own hair, I have since I was 13. I also cut my husbands hair. But now that our oldest son, he's 2, needs a haircut, were debating on doing it at home or taking him somewhere. Now he's terrified of scissors. I don't know why or how this happened but he is. I'm scared that if we took him somewhere, the idea of both scissors and a stranger being that close to him, he would act horrible and get a bad haircut. But if I do it at home we can distract him with his favorite toys and do a little at a time so he won't scream and get scared. But that also runs the chance of me messing it up, I'm not too great at cutting men's hair, and having to go somewhere anyway. What did you do when it was time for your babys first haircut? Any tips appreciated.

There are hair salons that cater specifically to children, where they can watch cartoons while they're getting their hair cut. They even have race cars and carousel horses for the kids to sit on instead of the usual chair! If you can't find a place like this, maybe visit a few salons to find out what they're like. Once you find a salon that looks good to you, talk to them about your son's fears and see what they say. I took my daughter to my salon for her 1st haircut - what a mistake! They didn't have a booster chair for her, so they spread a cape on the floor and had her sit there. The woman didn't even talk to my daughter, just started spraying her hair with water. It took my daughter by surprise, so she started crying (not loudly at all, she was very shy) & we were told that we had to leave since they had clients there that were getting massages and hearing my daughter cry was upsetting everyone else! I ended up waiting until she was older and taking her to a more relaxed atmosphere. I never went back to "my" salon again! If you find a good salon to take your son to, I would definitely talk to them (in person) in advance to let them know of your son's fears. I didn't have a problem taking my son in to get his haircut when he was little. I've found the cheap hair cutting chains - Fiesta, Great Clips - seem to have the most child friendliest staff there! Good luck!

Oh your poor baby. That was quite rude of them to ask you to leave. If they weren't equipped to handle children they should have said so. But my son crying is one thing I'm worried about. I know he's ok and that he's just scared, but others might think I'm a bad parent for trying to do this to him. If we took him to get it done, we were thinking of the place in Walmart cuz we've heard good things about them. Even though the children involved were older, like 5 or 6, it still means they can do kids.

I would hope that no one would think a parent is a bad parent because they're having their child's hair cut! That's terrible! Is there any chance you could take your son to Walmart and have him watch other kids getting their hair cut, with him understanding that he won't be getting his hair cut? Then go and do something fun with him afterwards? That way he associates hair cuts with other kids and something fun? Oh the things we do for our kids, right?! :D Good luck!

I have taken my child to a place that specializes and does just children's hair cuts. It was called cookie cutters. When you walked in there was a small plastic play area for the kids to play on, along with other toys. Then each station has a tv at it with the choice of the girl station or the boy station...it loops cartoons. The seat is also a "ride" to some degree. They get to choose a tractor or a plane or a car. they get buckled in. The people who work there are really good at moving the seat and themseleves to get the child's hair cut done well and so the child can see what is going on.

Wow, that place sounds awesome. I don't think we even have a kids hair cut place around here. Unless we drove to the city and that's like a 3 hour trip. But I might look into finding a kids shop somewhere closer.

it is a initial reaction of kids, i had my share of that too. my eldest really refused to have his first haircut then, he cried and cried that it was difficult for the barber to finish it. but nowadays, he is used to scissors.

Well I have my kids are always water to a hairdresser. I think this is good. For a hair stylist knows how to done within your hairstyle and how you cut. I always go re the same hairdresser and he always knows what to do with my hair. Soshta so it is with my children. Have a nice day!

If he is 2 I would just do it at home. I am sure you will do a great job, if you have been cutting your own since 13, im sure you will be extra careful with your little 2 year old boy!! and at least you can always take him the hairdresser if it does mess up. I think you should have some faith, bribe him, put on a cartoon, and make it fun at home!! good luck
