Hi friends,i need your help. Look at the situation,.. I use Ubuntu operating system and i connect to the internet using my mobile. For browsing,it is good. But,when i intend to download any applications from the Ubuntu Software Center,it takes a lot of time.Sometimes,it fails too. But,i am really interested in trying out a few applications.Very near to my home,i have a cyber cafe with very high internet speed. But,the systems there are running on windows. So,my question is,can i download the applications of Ubuntu using windows and later transfer them on to my PC for offline installation? Please help me out guys,..

you can download manually ubuntu application but it will be very hard because the application usually have dependency which maybe or maybe not already installed in your ubuntu installation, but if you want to try it visit packages.ubuntu.com and download manually your package and its dependencies... good luck...

Dependencies are the main problem. I don't think that it is possible to check the dependencies of a Linux app under Windows (except if someone has compiled a ldd like command), and as a dependency can have also dependencies, it will be very difficult to have an app running at first time.

Based on my experience, Linux applications can be downloaded on windows as tar.gz and other linux archive formats. There was one site where I learned how to install linux applications that are downloaded on windows and then transferred to linux using a storage device. Too bad it was about a year ago when I last visited that site and I don't remember the url anymore. Did you try looking on the Ubuntu website for information regarding your query?

It depends on the application. Windows may not allow it since it's not compatable with the system itself. Othertimes it will, but you still need to be carful. Downloading from a cafe isn't really the smartest thing to do since so many other people use those computers, and depending on the day, your high speed might not be all that fast. If other users are using large applications, that'll slow down the server giving you the same problem you're having at home. I would say try it (make sure to save it to a flash drive ) and see how it works out for you. Otherwise, the safer method would be to just wait out the download process. If some downloads fail, then they are more than likely broken and regardless of what you do, they'll still be broken. So remember that.... and keep it in mind when downloading everything and anything.

Yes you can sure download Ubuntu applications on a Windows system, but I highly doubt whether any site provides the list of softwares as Ubuntu Software Center does. Still, I have an opinion for you, try the site called Launchpad.net. It is a well maintained site for Linux applications. There you can search for softwares you are looking for and so you can download them according to your machine/OS configuration, i.e. for both 64 bit(x64) and 32 bit(x86). Hope I did some help! ===================================================================================== Recommend Linux to your friends, bcos, its fantastic. :-) Take care!!

You could use a USB stick with a Live Ubuntu installation and boot off of it when you're in the cyber cafe [if they do allow it] and download from there.

I know a computer that has windows can have Ubuntu I am not sure if you can transfer it and also not sure if you can offline instal it. Most things these day that you have to download usually need the internet but here is what to do! Go to the internet cafe and talk to one of the people working there they usually know a lot about computers and they wouldn't charge you for just a question...Hope I helped!
