Privacy Settings for Facebook: Do you use them?

Philippines

Facebook now has a lot of privacy settings for its users. With the rise of Facebook-related crimes, it's been a must for Facebook to put those in place. Do you actually use those privacy settings, or do you just leave them alone? Personally, I block people from time to time, I don't show my friends and family on my profile, and I keep most of my content to "friends only." How about you?

I always use the Privacy settings in Facebook. All of my information there are set to Friends Only. My status and some of my photos are set to specific group of friends. I'm very careful with my Facebook account.

Good for you, Chiwasaki! It's good to see another Facebook user who's very aware of what they can do with Facebook. Thanks for replying!

Hi nenyalorien! There are people who can steal information on your Facebook account. They can even set a new Facebook account using my identity. I don't want that to happen so I'm careful on the things I put on Facebook.

i have my privacy settings properly secured, as i can think the best for me. i could probably add people to my list even if i don't personally know them.

Good for you! Btw, why do you say that you could probably add people you don't know to your list? Did you group your Facebook friends by security levels? Just wondering. :)

Hi again Neil, Facebook has had new changes, and you can now make lists of friends there. When you post, you can create lists and limit your posts to these lists of friends. You may also post things and limit these just to a friend or two which you will specify. These settings are on the right-hand, lower corner of the post box. If you've already made the post, you can modify the privacy settings of those by mousing over on the upper right-hand corner of that post. You can also set people to be "Close Friends," and you can post statuses and items that are limited only to them. You may also be able to get exclusive updates and notifications only from them. You may also be able to set some friends to view only your info, but not your wall, not your pictures, etc. Happy Facebooking!

Yes, I use their Privacy settings feature. They are very useful for me. Especially now that I have a secret boyfriend, I hide all our pictures and relationship status from my family and some of my friends. Very helpful.

Oh. Haha. Good one. However, here's what I did: I removed my mom and my dad from my Facebook and then BLOCKED them too. That way they won't need to know about us. If they can't deal with it, when my boyfriend was very up front with them and wanted them to know that he was willing to do anything, work hard to help us both have a great future, they decided to shut down and reject my boy. So that is the consequence. It was hard for me to grow up anyway, so living a parent-free life is a happy, freeing change for me. :)

Yes i use it to private my profile, only people who i accept can see what i have on my page. Their is too much hackers, and crime going in this world.People should be careful with their personal information when it comes to Facebook. So am glad when they implement the privacy setting their, and am using work so far.

Hi Tash! Good to know that your privacy settings worked for you and were good for you, as well. :) You're right, too many people in this world are just evil and have nothing better to do, so it's best to protect oneself. Thanks for answering and you have a great year ahead!

Good for you, besthope! Yes, it's best to keep some things private. Btw, you could now change the privacy settings of your Status Updates even after you've posted them. :)

Yeah sure I do. I take my privacy there very seriously. I don't add people whom I barely know. Not even if we've got 50 mutual friends. And same here, I don't show my friend list and family list. Some things are set to "only me". Also, even if I really know those on my list, I still don't put everything n my page. Who knows, my friend's account's hacked and others are posers. It's really dangerous out there. :D No one can protect us from the dangers on the internet world so when we sign up on social networking sites, we must sign up at our own risk.

Yes, I do use them. I have pretty much the same settings as you do. I don't have anything less than 'friends only' and my emil and phone number are things only I can see. I like being able to change my privacy settings. It makes me feel more comfortable on a public social networking site.

True that. I feel like Facebook is the safest social networking website so far, though. I don't really consider it a "public" site because you can control who'll see you or not. Thanks for replying! :)

Yes I do the same and have my profile only visible to my friend only as well. I am also not searchable and will block anyone I feel I do not want any communication with. I also do not list publicly any contact information either.

Good going! :) Yes, I guess that's best. I'd do the same thing, but since I work online and need the networks, I have to be searchable. :) Thanks for replying!

I set my facebook to be my home. So, I won't allow anybody I don't know to see my 'interior'. I hide photos and notes from them. I just allow my friends to see them. Because it is about privacy. I want to have it, though it is in cyber world.

Go to the top-right corner of your Facebook page, look for the Account link, then go to either Account Settings or Privacy Settings and you can tinker with the settings there. Facebook labeled the functions properly and have explanations for each function, so it won't be too hard to understand what you're changing them for. :)
