Well I seem to have an interest on the bishops lately, not that i want to be religious nor I'm into a game of chess but they just seem to get into the limelight lately. My last discussion was on the comments made about an article involving some bishops but this time what attracted me to this article is the content itself. Below is the link, please read it and share your opinion... http://ph.news.yahoo.com/bishop-pcso-fund-mess-holds-shares-stock-ayala-123509105.html

It won't come as a surprise to me at all, friars once owned vast tracts of land and azucareras ( sugar mills)during the Spanish era, BPI, the country's oldest bank , once sat on prime property owned by Dominican Friars. They have been doing this since the time of Padre Damaso. Before the Spaniards came and brought the Religion to the Philippines, they were already selling indulgences in Europe during the Middle Ages, right , salvation in exchange for donations. It's really hard to have a separation of Church and state in our country although we have already a law, once in a while it would pop up it's ugly head because of our historical and religious past.

Separation between the church and state is wishful thinking. Ever since, the church and state have co exist. In my opinion they are two separate entities sitting across each other on a see saw and the people is the fulcrum, when the other becomes too heavy the other complains and vice versa o in effect, both have it's high and lows while the fulcrum remains on the same position bearing both weights at the same time.

I agree, it's so hard for our government to separate from the Catholic Church especially since most of the officials are Catholics. The constitution already emphasize the separation between religion & government but I still think that they should put a more thorough law about this. There should be a thick wall between the government & religion. Something that won't easily be destroyed.

I wish ( although you are right it is wishful thinking) that the fulcrum or the people should rise up or elevate and snap that board into two breaking it permanently into two separate pieces, maybe each one could make his own swing with the broken board they have

I hope I am not late to post a comment on this one. I haven't read all in the article posted above, I just scanned it. And yes, I wonder how did they attain the position as top stockholders on some local banks. just put www. in front, mybpimag.com/images/pdf/top_100_stockholders.pdf I want to share something that I think is complicated, I worked on a famous and well known local bank in our country as an analyst in loans department. I was some kinda shock and intrigue, coz we always have 2 or 3 credit card applicants of priests, bishops and nuns every month. If I was to base their applicants, I might reject them since one of the qualifications on credit card is you must have a basic salary, and since religious sector doesn't have basic salary, they are not qualified. But since they have an account [that has a huge amount of money] in that bank, they immediately receive their requested credit cards. I was wondering, where did they get that sum of money on their accounts or the church's account if they only get their money thru donations or "abuloy" on the mass. Some well known churches in our country has a minimum deposit of not less than a million. I am not criticizing or complaining, I am just curious about it. Is their any corruption on religious sector or political scandals?

That's quite a revelation nytrisco. So priests and nuns have credit cards too? . But really, the wealth of the church is something that's out the question because they do really earn much and tax free too. I don't think they would just put their money in a safe because if they do that would surely overflow with coins in one mass alone. So they deposit it in a bank and where would they name the account for? certainly not in the name of Jesus Christ.

Hahaha! Good one ybong007! n_n And I agree with you. Other than the "abuloy" from the mass, many rich people also donate big amounts to them. Are you familiar with a saying from the Bible that says we should offer at least 10% of our total income to the Lord? So if we think about all the rich people offering 10%, that's already huge! Or perhaps... they don't believe in this saying...lolz

It makes me sad reading this article. I haven't heard this side of the story before. And I thought the bishops already returned the said vehicles. I never knew that this controversy would get bigger. The priest shared in his homily yesterday that he was saddened but not because of the Bishop but because of people jumping directly to conclusions. He was asking us that we should know both sides of the story first before throwing hurtful words on the accused. He was also sad that most of the people giving violent reactions came from the youth. As what I've heard on the bishops' side, they've returned the vehicles and the government officials accusing them found out that the vehicles were not really SUVs. The excess of the money were really used to help those in need. The officials even apologized because of this misinterpretation.

I don't think the news about those priests having multi million pesos in stocks were all made up. Some priests really are rich and this is not only true to catholic priests, even cults have rich leaders. Priests possessing lots of material wealth are not new, in fact just based on how churches around the world are built we can say that those don't come cheap, if people can give to build those grand churches, how much more to the person who will be in charge of it. But having a lot of money doesn't really mean you're a bad person as long as you use some of it to help others and as long as you acquire those riches in the right way. Exclusive schools manage by some churches don't come cheap either so it is expected that the profit has to be deposited somewhere.

There is a passage in the Bible which says you can serve God or money, but not both. Some of our bishops obviously have lost their way even though they will vehemently deny it and will even demand apology if you remind them of their duties as servants of God. I am a Catholic and I am deeply disappointed as to what our priests and bishops had become.

Maybe this is a way of god for reminding us not to put our trust on men who pretend to be holy since like every one else they could always fall victim to the temptations of satan.

This is noting new as we all know that Catholics schools in the Philippines are run by these Church officials, they give education only to those who have the money and ask donations in the name of the poor to finance their comfortable living. In our church, people's donation is used to purchase the parish's priest car, a Crosswind for this matter!

I can't really understand why a church would run an exclusive school for the rich or for those who can only afford because nuns and priests don't really have an expensive lifestyle or maybe they have... where would they need all those money? do they have such high salaries too? . On second thought,I don't think it's the church's job to uplift the poor in material things because because that's the job of the government, the job of the church is to help those who are poor in spirit. Now I don't think you need a SUV to do that job or stock worth in millions. On the other hand, focusing on the rich catholic priests is unfair because there are a lot of religious sects whose leaders are rich as well, maybe the reports should also disclose the riches of the leaders of those sects too in the name of fairness and I'm sure there are a lot out there. But we should not really dwell on it so much because no matter how surprising it is that has always been the case even in the time of the Pharaohs.

I cannot begin to describe how irritated I am with this issue. Some people who are being looked up to by many ought to be more careful in their actions..AND their desires.

It's really disappointing to know that in spite of all the poverty around us, there are a few among our church leaders who have so much. I was a little disappointed but as days pass by I came to a realization that this is really not happening in the catholic church alone, there are other churches who also have millionaires as its leaders. The only consolation we have is that at least they can use some of their money to help the poor unlike those who only keep their money to themselves.
