Feeling Depressed = Eating?

I just saw this commercial where a young woman was sitting in a corner of her kitchen eating brownies out of the pan and the voiceover has her saying , 4 years and he sends a email.... All I could think was How can she eat when she is so depressed? Am I Weird? If I'm upset , the Last thing I want to do is eat! So I ask you , when you are depressed , can you eat? If so what do you eat? And most importantly, does it make you feel better?

I usually play video games when i'm depressed. Definatly NOT eat. I don't need something that tastes wonderful in my mouth to cure my heartache. Anyone that does that is only gonna get a belly as a friend. And we trick our minds into thinking that food is the only way to make us feel better. It's our fault we eat when we're depressed. There's no i-can't-help-it unless its genetic.

It's Always our fault we are depressed! thing in life make us feel depressed. But I do agree that many think eating will make them feel better when sometimes it doesn't.

Personally it really often depends on the situation, but a lot of the time when I am depressed is some of the times I do not feel like eating as much, and if I do eat something it is usually something like Chocolate or something Fast food which is not considered the Best for me anyways. But it is true most of the time when you are feeling down you do not care about eating, and most of the time you sleep.
Chocolate for some reason is one of the Best foods that seems to help me feel better no matter what I seem to be going thru.

This is something that I too never understood!
I've always just thought that I was different because I don't turn to food when I'm sad.
When I'm depressed, my world collapses around me. Eating would be the last thing on my mind. And when I do eat, it's only when everything gets resolved. As I often only notice the hunger when the solution to a problem has been figured out.

I'm not alone! As soon as the problem is resolved, I notice my stomach and I say , Oh! I'm hungry!

Eating can sometimes make you feel better. There are times when i'm depressed that i can't eat but there are also times that i eat a lot (junk foods especially) to feed off my depression.

Many persons thinks that eat helps when you are sad, I'm one of those persons!!
When I'm feeling depressed, I always want to eat a chocolate chips ice cream and stay in the in my bed watching TV. The bad things is that I always feel worst after that I finished the ice cream.

To stay in bed, I can see . But eating ice cream?No not until I feel better. Then it is a great treat.

I cant eat, but the thing is If you really depressed then you should find something interesting to eat then that will helps you on overcoming the situation.
Ice cream kind of things are recommended,

Yes I sometimes eat when I am depressed. It will make a person feel better for awhile but then guilt sets in making things worse! Depression is a disease that I do suffer from! It is moderate and it runs in my family. With me I run to food while other people will run to something else! Sometimes I won't eat but cry instead. it sucks and I never seem to get over the wall! This is one reason I have big weight problem!

Depression works differently for some people. There are those like me who absolutely cannot eat while depressed. I can loose way too much weight during very hard depressing moments. There are some people who are completely the opposite that while depressed find food to be comforting.

Depression could go either way. I have seen people eat when they get nervous and depressed and then I saw people that do not eat at all. It is common. I sometimes do both. There are times when I am depressed about something and extremely stressed out over it and I will eat, basically things I am not supposed to eat. Then there are times that I get real depressed and I cannot eat a thing. Eating makes you only feel better for that moment, not after.

Include me in the list.I don't know why but when I'm depressed,the first thing I want to do is eat!!!Maybe eating can make you forget any problems for a while-another kind of distraction!eh?

I guess that you are right. I usually eat too when I'm depressed and watch TV or some movies. I think that when we are doing that, we can think in others things.

Hi there,
I almost do the same if I really feed bad. I keep myself busy by eating and eating more. I love eating than focus on the bad thing that happened to me. In that point, I can feel better and relax maybe because I was able to divert my emotions. I know that this is not normal but eating has a positive and therapeutic effect on me when I am depressed. I don't cry but I really crave for many foods to eat. After eating, I feel normal. Bad feelings are still there but I the pain felt lesser after eating.

I never try to dull the pain. I just suffer through it. Once the pain is over Then I can eat.

I eat extremely well when I am depressed.I do believe that eating something I like can make me so much happier. And according to some scientific research, eating specific kinds of food, like chocolate, can also bring positive impact on one's emotion.
I think different people use their own strategies to deal with depression.
Another way I use is also from a scientic research, that is, if you laugh with you are feeling really bad, it give a message to the brain and mislead it that you are very happy now, and which can relieve your sad feeling. It is quite useful to me, and maybe it is a better way to deal with depression than eating because it wont make you fat!

I couldn't laugh when I was sad. All that would do is make me feel like a liar, and thus get More depressed. When I get upset, my stomach gets upset. I couldn't eat if I wanted to.

Yes I eat when I'm depressed. I call it comfort food. Mine is french fries and hot chocolate from McDonald's. Every time I feel down I just go straight to McDonald's and order my comfort food. Well it does make me feel better. After eating I'm good as new. Ice cream and chocolates can do the trick too.

Ok. I love MCD's French Fries . They are the best. I'm glad they make you feel better. Me? I have to feel better then go to MCD's

When I am worried about something I have a problem eating, when I am depressed I have a problem doing much of anything. I agree with you the commercial is crazy. It perpetuated a stupid stereotype, in my opinion.

well I suppose that different people react in different ways to their feelings.
Personally I am like you. When I feel depressed I can't eat anything.
It's really hard for me to eat when I feel sad or depressed and it is also really hard for me to sleep well in that condition.
Any way, I hope we wall feel good and eat good :)

Yeah, I have experienced that dear. I divert my attention to eating instead of feeling upset. However, eating when depressed is not a good idea. I learned this the hard way I accumulated unwanted pounds and so I am now having a hard time shedding them off. Also, you may suffer from poor nutrition as you think less about what can you get out of the food you eat in terms of nutritional value as you care more on what to put on your mouth and the taste. Indigestion may follow, this is even hard. I think slowing down when depress gives a more comfortable feeling, eat fruits, juices, tea that can calm our system. When you're depress and bloated at the same time, it is like you will get more depressed than relieved.

I never think of nutrition . I just think about the taste. I Have to be Hungry to eat. When I'm depressed I am not hungry. I have to feel better Before I eat.

Hi Sarahuthbeth, The depression kinds are different, normal ones which doesnot give a mood to eat anything, the other extreme, it will increase the appetite, its a kind of stress which makes you to eat more. Either they eat nothing or eat more. I never eat when am depressed. It does not make better but reduce stress.

Sometimes I cannot eat anything and sometimes I do. It depends on my present mood. Same reason depression. It is not wise to be depress for a long time though since these melancholic moods will create more emotional problems for you that may make you have a hard time handling it.
