NO, it does not cause diabetes; but, excess weight especially around the tummy does increase your risk of diabetes and other health problems like high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Studies do show that if your fat is concentrated in your thighs and bottom instead of around the tummy, the risk of getting diabetes is lower than if it is around your waist; but, where you put on weight is genetically predetermined and so is diabetes.
If others in your family have a tendancy to accumulate fat around their tummies and they have diabetes then you have two risk factors instead of just one. You can't do anything about your genes; but, you can do something about your weight.

hi Lxandra for really good answers go to American DiabetesAssoc.org and ask those questions, they will tell you overweight can bring on type 2 diabetes because a lot of fat cells will interfere with the insulin to get into the muscle cells with the glucose the muscle cells need so that glucose or sugar ends up in your blood stream. being a lot overweight can indeed cause type 2 diabetes and I am proof of that. the moral to this story is see the doctor and lose that flabby gut with exercise and cutting down on sugary crap and fatty salty crap. American Diabetes can give you tons of information so check in on the site and do see your primary care doctor.

Hi Lxandra!
I don't think flabby tummy can cause diabetes , its never a diagnostic to determine diabetes.
Maybe you can go check on your laboratory to confirm if you doubt. Without any doctors order you can go to a laboratory to check on your sugar level. They will take blood sample then examine with fasting(FBS), or if u doubt again, you can try glycosylated hemoglobin test, that is to measure your sugar for the last 3 months. There are many ways to check your sugar levels but the two could determine whether you are diabetic or not..Be halthy!

If in doubt, talk to your doctor about this - they are the best people with ALL the right knowledge, and if you are in danger can suggest exact remedies to make sure you don't develop it!
If you don't want to go to the doctor for whatever reason, I'd say it mainly depends on your diet & exercise regime.
Like, do you eat a lot of sugary/junk foods with little or no exercise...try a quick search on the internet and I'm sure you'll find much more comprehensive answers than anyone on here.
