dogs mating

The other day when I went home from work I saw two dogs mating. They were stuck butt to butt and could not separate from each other.
A guy tried to separate them by spraying them with water. That's cruelty to animals, don't you think? Imagine yourself being disturbed like that when you're making love. Anyway it was unsuccessful, they still stuck together though and wouldn't separate.
My question is why do dogs stick together like that when they mate? When people make love they can separate any time they want to.

it's completely natural and normal.
the male dogs bits swell up to the extent that they aren't easily separated.
this gives time for him to fertilise the female, without another male dog having the opportunity to mate with the female until his sperm has had a chance to do its thing.
