Why does everyone think Nirvana was a great band?

All my life I have ran into people whom are really big Nirvana fans. I personally do not think they deserve on of the respect or attention they do. When people tell me the guitar playing was great I laugh. Kurt didn't even know how to play guitar. Becoming a fan of Nirvana is kind of a joke. You are helping to support a dead band that never did anything worth while. If you are a Nirvana fan and want to change my mind.. give it a shot. Prove me wrong. Convince me that Nirvana is a great band!

Hmmm...about Nirvana , I find myself in a conflict : on one side I like listening to many of Nirvana songs , I was a fan of them.On the other side, you can't compare Nirvana to pearl jam nor alice in chains , nor dream theatre nor metallica... Nirvana played simple and catchy songs , no brain and no tallent or demanding music parts in their songs. Curt's screamings were sometimes too loud and pointless. Maybe it's not just Nirvana but it's a lot of other things that were in the 90's. Maybe Nirvana added something to the rock music that was missing until Nirvana. Hey,maybe it's Dave ( from the foo fighters ) who gave nirvana a better energy since their first album was boring and Dave wasn't a part of it. Then he came and Nirvana became a success.

Maybe his screams were quite necessary. Lets take Metallica BLACK album. OVER PRODUCED and OVERRATED. Kurt was RAW and genuine. He didn't let Bob Rock come in and shine his boots until he could see his own ego in them.

First of all , who is Bob ? What makes you say Kurt was genuine ? Nirvana's songs were nice and not beyond. In bloom , come as you are , lithium , heart shaped box , those had magic in them. Sliver was sucks , too much of the same line "granpa take me home" wow , so genuine... Man , I'm telling you , if only a new band come out and just sing literally "bla bla bla bla..." in their songs but play nice with the guitars , it will be the next Nirvana. Nirvana's formula was something fresh and rebelius , that's almost all of their magic.

*Sigh* my friend, your question and comments most definitely say you have very little MUSIC history knowledge. BOB ROCK was the producer of Metallicas BLACK album and many other over polished rock bands. Another band has come out and did, as you said, "Bla Bla Bla" they are called "Puddle of Mudd" and only had a tiny dose of the same success Nirvana enjoyed. I respect your opinion but your lack of knowledge about music history does not qualify you for such a discussion. Nirvana CHANGED mainstream music during their time. Lest you forget their run was only from 1987 to 1994. Educate yourself a bit more before you argue with other musicians lol Best o luck to you friend.

we are all entitled to our own opinions. if you think they aren't great, then that's your call. but i think it's rude to say that becoming a fan of nirvana is a joke. try to respect other people's opinions as well.

I have to agree with Enigma13. It is a rather BULLY type statement to say it is a joke. A more intellectual opinion would be better suited.

I did not read any of the other comments. However, I am not here to convince you to be a fan. No one can MAKE me like Buck Cherry or Nickleback. Music is an art that is appreciated by the individual. The beauty of art is everyone is entitled to their opinion and thats what makes it art. Not everyone appreciates the same pictures, color schemes or music. If we did, life would be boring. NIRVANA does deserve its spot in music notoriety. They earned it. (My opinion.) The guitar work Kurt did was NOT spectacular but it was sincere and authentic. (Contrary to your comment he could not play guitar, KURT was actually a very skilled player he just kept it simple.) I appreciate your opinion albeit it seems as though you are a bit EMOTIONAL about NOT liking something.

I can't really convince you to be a Nirvana fan because it's just a matter of preference. For me, what I love about them is their meaningful songs and the simplicity that it has in each song. By simplicity, I mean the typical format of song like 2 verse, 2 chorus,a solo and an outro. Unlike other bands having songs with duration of 6 - 9 mins.

Nirvana changed the music industry completly, they bought Grudge to the sense. Which at that time was unheard off. It opened up so many different avenues in the music world. That's why they are the greatest band of all time.

Smells like Teen Spirit. That was a rocking song, especialy for teenagers. IT's raw, it rocks, especially for young people who don't know much.
