What dog should I get

July 18, 2011 2:50pm CST
When I move into my apartment in New York I want a small dog to stay around the house. I just don't know what type of small dog to keep inside. I was thinking of maybe a Yorkie or a Shih-tzu but I don't want a poodle. I just need small dog to keep company.

Personally I'm not a fan of the tiny dogs like chihuahuas, yorkies or shih-tzus. They are just too "delicate" for me -- and sometimes REALLY annoying. Haha. Anyway, I am a huuuuge fan of the beagle. They aren't the smallest breed, but they are small-medium, and just adorable. Problem is you may need to have a nice sized yard (FENCED!) because they love to go out and sniff everywhere. Another small-ish breed I like is the jack russell terrier. They're full of energy, though, so if you choose a JRT then you better be active! Also if you're looking for a "mini" version of a popular guard dog, then go for the Welsh Corgi. There are two different types, Cardigan and Pembroke, and I've heard there are some minor differences personality-wise between the to, so do you're research on them before deciding. These little dogs look like mini German Shepherds (though they aren't and no such thing exists). I'd consider getting one of these guys AFTER my beagle :) Hope that helps a little. Good luck picking a breed. I know how hard it is!

I'd recommend a cat for an apartment or 2. They are great company and you don't have to walk them when the weather is bad. I don't like small dogs at all because people tend to baby them too much and they end up being nasty little animals. Cats are pretty easy to train. Every cay I've ever had has good manners. they're quieter than dogs, too.

I favorite dogs are dashhounds. (weiner dogs) They are loyal little dogs. I've had them all my life. I wouldn't give up their love for nothing. They look at you with those pityful little eyes with love. I didn't know you could have dogs in an apartment. Everywhere lived we could only have cats. When got new puppies, when we moved into a house. Unfortunately, they are all older now. Youngest being 10-years, oldest is 15-years old. I guess we will be in the need of new puppies ourself someday soon. Good luck on your puppy search. Best Wishes!

Japanese Spitz are really great dogs. They are about 1 foot in height and weight at 20 pounds at most. One thing to key if you own one of these dogs is that you must act as the leader at all times. Like most dogs, you do not want them to become your leader, or else you will have a handful, especially with this breed. They do shed, but generally they are very clean. From what I remember you don't need to bathe them regularly, they can keep themselves very clean, even if they have that very white coat. If you want a more general picture of this, you can either search it up on mylots search bar, or if you have seen a pomeranian, it looks similar just with very white or pure white coating. Very very closely related to a Samoyed if you have seen one of those also.

Shih Tzu are great for apartment life. They don't belong outside for very long because they are sensitive to heat. My parents have a Shih Tzu, his name is Peanut. He is just the cutest dog. The only time that he bark is when the other dog barks. He is a very good dog. A shih tzu needs to go one a walk daily. The only bad part that i see about these dogs is that they need a lot of grooming. Peanut has to be taken to a groomer about twice a month to be cut. His hair grows in his eyes so he can't see.

If you search online, there is actually a little quiz you can take to find out what kind of dog is best for you. It asks you a series of questions to gauge what would work for your situation. It asks size of house/apartment, yard and the amount of time you'd have. Also personality questions to see what breed would fit you too. I think it would be a big help.

You want to consider a dog that will be quiet and low energy since you are moving into an apartment. If you get a loud dog your neighbors will complain. Have you considered getting an English Bulldog? That are not loud, and their low energy will fit right into an apartment. They'd be content to lounge around with you, and you'll only need to take them out for potty walks (of course I don't think they would mind an extra walk if you're up to it). Yorkie's and Shih-tzu's might both be noisy dogs (of course every dog is different, you could get lucky with a quiet one). Or if you're set on those breeds, you could look for an older dog, they are more likely to be quiet and they will have less energy than a young dog would have (usually). I would recommend going to your local shelter(s) and just asking to see the dogs. If your shelters are like ours you can just walk through the kennel rooms, and if you see a dog you like ask to take him out or sit in the cage with him. Chances are you'll find one you fall in love with right there at the shelters. Mutts really do make the best pets. If you don't have the time to visit the shelter right now, check out www.petfinder.com and search pets there. And if you see any you like you can contact the shelter and set up a meeting. Just please don't buy from a pet store or breeder, they aren't worth the amounts charged, and shelter dogs need rescued more. Where are you from? I'll be happy to look animals up for you in your area. Good luck! Make sure when you get your new pup you share pictures!! ***If you plan on walking the dog a couple times a day, then you def. don't need to focus on low energy dogs. If they get enough exercise they will be more then content in an apartment.

Hello Enicole and welcome to myLot! I think the best thing you can do is to go to the local shelter and search for the dog you need. They may not have it right away but if you wait a few months, your patience will be rewarded. I understand that you want a small breed. So, at least this aspect is clear. You should consider how much time you have for grooming. A long haired dog needs daily brushing and a regular grooming that may be costly. A short haired dog doesn't need to be brushed so often but they may shed all the time. A list of long haired small breeds: Bichon Maltese, Bichon Frise, Bichon Havanese, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Miniature Schnauzer, Scottish Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Pomeranian, Toy Poodle. Some of the short hair small breeds are: Pug, French Bulldog, Manchester Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Chihuahua, Italian Greyhound, Dachshund.

You can use one of the many websites that are sponsored by the breeders associations (AKC for example). These sites list the various breeds from large to small, and also include what exercise would be needed for each breed, some small breeds are extremely hyper and need lot of enrichment and exercise. Living in an apartment there is also the socialization issue, some of the smaller breeds have a tendency to be a bit timid, and a timid dog can easily become defensive and territorial. Look up the different breeds, pick out a few to research further, narrow it down then your options are to either check the pound, any animal shelter, contact a breeder, or check out the rescue sites.

I have a small lhasa apso and she is the perfect dog. She is very obedient and calm, most of the times, she is on the sofa or in the bed with us. She is a very good company and always receive me when I get home.

Look on Animal Planet as they do have a show that goes over what breeds are known for certain characteristics. Some require a lot of time, are high-strung, and and maintaining and others are low-key. Just be certain of what you are getting into.

Whichever small breed you choose will be happy in any space with you as long as you dedicate time EVERY day to giving it the exercise it needs. Please don't think that because it is only small it will be happy with just the odd trip out from time to time. Otherwise you will end up with it tearing your apartment to pieces whenever you go out! Dogs need fresh air and variety in life just as much as we do! Sorry if this is patronising or stating the obvious to you, it just breaks my heart to see dogs trapped inside all the time. It will love you regardless but will only behave when left alone if you have taken it out for long enough for it to need to sleep afterwards!! And who could blame it! Please reconsider getting a dog if you are out a lot and don't have time to walk it for around an hour a day. (Poss bit more or less depending on the breed... Jack russells would need more!!)

Please adopt a dog from the Animal Shelter. These dogs have the same right as others. They are all good boys and good girls. If you can adopt one of them, you really rescue him/ her. If you have any worries, you can visit the Animal Shelter, maybe you will like them. Please give them a warmful home.
