How do you feed an overactive mind?

simultaneously running different things - actively running your mind

I've always known myself to have a mind that runs 'a hundred miles a minute'. I always have to have a lot of things going on at the same time to make myself feel productive. For example, I am currently at work now, trying to manage the biggest project of my life, and yet I am myLotting, and trying manage by emails a business that I just started last week. On the side, I'm also chatting with a friend in the UK and BBMing with a friend in Chicago. I've always been like this. I feel unproductive, and un-balanced if I don't run my mind this way. I think I have a sickness! Do you know anybody like this? Or are you like this? How do you satisfy your mind? What sort of projects do you have simultaneously going on right now?

Yeah, that sounds a lot like me. I'm Mylotting and checking e-mail while cooking dinner and getting ready to go to work, all while trying to keep the kids calm and occupied after finishing a research report only moments ago which I had started this morning. Ugh.. I'm exhausted just thinking about it all. And BTW- I don't really feel good today.. major headache and overheated! My mind is constantly going in a million different directions, and if I have nothing better to think about, I'll often start thinking about dark and disturbing things which get me upset, worried, scared, and nervous. So I try to stay occupied at all times. School helps, as stressful and time consuming as it is. If I have nothing better to do or think about I can always pick up one of my text books and occupy myself and my mind that way.

I don't like that I worry so much. My husband doesn't. I constantly ask him why he never worries about certain things that I'm constantly worried about, and he says it's because he just doesn't think about it. I don't know how to not think about it.. it just pops into my head even if I don't want it to. For as long as I can remember I've been a daydreamer. I will create scenarios in my mind of a better life where I'm rich, famous, popular, etc. Often when I have nothing better to think about, or when the disturbing thoughts are creeping into my mind, I'll resort to my daydreams. They also help keep my mind busy when there's nothing else that can.

That's very interesting! That we are both the daydreamer type. Maybe we even bumped into each other's filthy-rich self in one of these daydreams. The next time we daydream, I'll let my people contact your people. We'll do lunch!

Great observation about times when our minds are not running 'a million different directions'! When I keep idle, I also think about dark and disturbing things. Or sometimes I worry myself ragged. Maybe this is our coping mechanism. To keep ourselves busy, so we don't get depressed. Thanks.

Try to read mystery books or even movies that invite the power of an overactive mind. Why don't test your mental ability by playing mind games like sudoku, text twist or book worm. Search for the hardest mathematical equation in the net and challenge yourself to answer it for a minute. Write something that runs in your mind and then reread it and edit. There are many things to make your mind loose some string. I don't mean, destroying it but to make your mind quite fed up for a while. So to, help you quite relax for a little bit of time.

Hello angie. I've already gone through that phase of reading mystery books, and playing 'mind games'. I think I still even have a couple of books in the car. Now doing mathematical equations does intrigue me! So, with this new business of mine, I've resorted myself in doing all the accounting work. And all the math that goes with it! Thanks.

Hello shorty08322. I think that's the only way to feed my mind. I just go ahead and do things that I want to, as I hate being idle. Thanks for the response.

can I have some of your mind? I'd love to be able to do that, I'd get a lot more done. I can only do a few things at once and if I have any more going on I get really stressed out about it. Glad you don't, in fact it seems you get stressed out if you DON'T have more things going on with you! so again I ask, can I have a bit of your mind? I bet you were a smart student!

Smart aleck! That was me! Yes, last weekend was so stressful for me because except for myLotting, I couldn't do anything else for my job and business. Thank goodness for 'Plants vs. Zombies' on the 360. It helped my mind distracted for a while. Thanks.

I would work to get calmed down. Keeping busy is about all you can do. Reading and taking in information to use in a healthy manner. You may be hyper and need to seek medical care to diagnose exactly what the problem is and give you some options. Medication may need to be taken to slow you down.

Visualization might help. Taking afew minutes to close your eyes, visualize a place that is calming and trancquil for you. Then visualize time spent there, what you see and do. THen come back and you should be able to calm down. It is hard. I have been working on it for about fourty years or more.

I think you're right. I've never really considered it, but I think if I did work on calming down, I would feel much better. And I think it is even healthier. It's just hard, because I am so used to it. Thanks for the idea!

Yeah I guess multi tasking could'nt be that great if we are looking at "quality" work. sometimes we really do need to put our mind at ones task at a time so as not to muddle things up. So you've heard about the punching mayor huh? Yeah, she made quite a stir here.its ironic though because a lot of people here actually applauded her for her actions. Personally i think it was really inappropriate. What do you think?

That's what I call Busy! The closest I have ever gotten to this is watching 5 hockey games at once! I am usually not That busy. So my mind just focuses on one job or task at a time.

my mind is like that too it's good in terms of ideas and communications but you can end up exhausting yourself and confuse everyone else if you're at work then take the break time, don't keep working I do yoga and meditation, a lot more meditation than yoga actually it helps a lot productivity is only good when the end product is of high quality otherwise it's not productivity, you merely burn yourself out

So very true! I also equate productivity with quality. So, it doesn't really feel that I've accomplished something because I worked on it. It has to be well done! Which is a bit difficult if you have a few things going on at the same time. Thanks for the response.

Haha, it sounds like you are great at multi-tasking. I would love to have my mind run a hundred miles per minute. Instead, it takes off at lightning speed - and starts getting slower and slower as time goes by (until it comes to a crashing halt). Ok, weird to think about, but totally true. I love multi-tasking or at least trying to, until I leave several 'projects' unfinished, forget to BBM back friends and call back relatives, forget to continue to work on whatever projects and even life choices that were on my 'to do' list. At least you take on several things at once with the ability to actually manage your time well enough to accomplish everything and not neglect anyone or anything!

Speaking of coming to a 'crashing halt', I actually have things like that too! I mentioned in another response here that of all of the things that I'd be doing at the same time, there are others that I really like doing, so they get 'overly-accomplished'. But for the others my interests also wanes, and it too sometimes come to a crashing halt. Thanks vegas girl!

I have really been trying to figure that point out for years. I have one of those minds who really are running a hundred miles a minute. On some of my more interesting days, it is at a hundred different directions and all of them rather enlightening in their own way. It can be almost scary when you really do think about it. The fact is all of those thoughts in my mind, struggling for some level of dominance. It can really make my head spin. I try and organize my priorities by writing them down. Of course that could lead to more paths being found when one really thinks about it. The more I think, the more I do realize that there are just so many things that I can really be doing. The human mind is quite an intriguing thing, often times it does really tend to go off and it pulls the rest of you along for the ride. At least that is what I feel a lot of the time. I just have to try and remain focused, but that is rather easier said than done. Any number of things can be going on, somethings without any rhyme or reason.

That's what I try to do at work. I could also be pulled to a hundred different directions, and only by writing down my priorities do I get things done. And like you say, the thoughts in our head does struggle to assert their dominance, so numbering these priorities does help. Thanks.

Hi bounce, I behave pretty much the same way, I'm always doing a few things at a time, some half finished, some over-accomplished An overactive mind feels the worse at night when I could not get to sleep and think of a lot of things, especially if they are past unpleasant memories Currently I'm logged on to facebook and mylot, also playing games and blogging on the side.

I know exactly what you mean, I sometimes feel the same exact way. Most of the time at work I am doing more the two things at a time, managing my e-mail both work and personal and sometimes even find myself mylotting at numerous occassions. Unfortunately mylotting this last two weeks as been a bit slow with personal problems I have been experiencing but I am hoping to get back on track. Right now at work we are working mainly on budget, that has basically been the main topic for the last month, making use that everything is done before the new fiscal year, such as completition of projects. So it has been a bit busy. But to be honest with I like to keep myself occupied it makes the day go by faster, I tend to get frustrated when it's a slow day.

I know what you mean about wanting to make the day go by faster. I am experiencing something similar right now. Work has been dragging, and I feel a little bit pressured, so I would rather have this day done with. So, I could focus on the other things I have brewing. Thanks for the response.

Sounds a little like ADD. You may want to talk to your doctor for medication if you always feel this distracted and in a million places at once. Not everyone likes taking medication or going to the doctor so I can understand if you don't want to take this route but I thought I would put it out there for you to think about. =) It sounds like you have it pretty much taken care of as long as your work allows you to do these side activities as long as you aren't too busy and you can get all your work done. My boss is a bit like this but he has a lot of freedom to do these kinds of things while at work he will chat with friends, lunch meeting with friends, text his friends, look up and search irrelevant things. However he is always keeping up with the demands of the job and does these things when it is slow or he can take his time with a project. Some suggestions: puzzle games, crosswords, sudoku, trade off activities at work often, etc..

Thanks for the thought! I am actually the type that doesn't like taking any medications. If I am sick, I absolutely wait it out before I take any medicines. Usually I get better before I really need to take any pill. So, medication for this ADD-type disorder of mine is out of the question. But then again, I am getting older, so maybe it's about time. Thanks again.

i am like that sometimes. i do a lot of crafts and have a lot of interests. i usually end up taking about 20 books out of the library each week so for the summer, that has been what i have been up to. once the cooler weather hits, i will be starting on my Christmas projects (gifts).

I think that's great that you turn your active mind into something creative, like crafts. At least it turns into something physical, that you can really hold. And hey! If you can even sell them for profit, then it's even better! Thanks.

hi bounce58 not anymore as I am retired now I am one tracked onto mylot and thinking about writing my auto biography why a country girl fromSouth Dakota married a man from Washington State, lived in tempe ARizona moved to California, lost a daughter and now ended up with my son in gov sponsored housing and me here in this tiresome retirement center which in ordinary circumstances would never never have thought of living yet my son lost his job, we got behind on the rents, and ended up homeless after all the restof being just another middle class family working and living our own lives. how did I come to this? should be fascinating to write and why do we keep hearing how this lousy economy is now getting better? better when hundreds of people here just in California are still out of jobs? come on face reality folks tis is a depression now.so my mind is active and runs on several different fields. I have known a few women who multitask and have no problem but I cannot do that anymore and really do not want tol. lol

I'm the same, I' very rarely doing one thing at a time. In my last job I would often do do some work from home, so I'd be sat in front of the TV, doing my work, checking my emails, drinking coffee and eating a snack. As I type this I' watching TV, chatting to my boyfriend and drinking coffee. I've always been someone that multi tasks. Again in my last job I would be proof reading and editing documents, answering the phone, talking to colleagues, responding to emails and helping colleagues as and when needed. I think I'd be bored doing one thing at a time

I feel I am the same way and multi-tasking for me is the only way to go. I am not one to do one thing at a time as I am always thinking about how to effectively utilize each and every second of the day. lol If it is a sickness then I have it too as this is the only way I function. If I were to do only one single thing at a time I would feel like I forgot to do something at the end of the day.

I am like this most days! I seem to have to have many things going on at once in order to feel like I am acutualy doing something. Now the trick to this is to make sure I get it allllll done and carry it out to the end. My mom used to call me hyper, but It just so happens I just have a very active mind according to my Dr. I get a kick out of him saying that oh and that I am a high strung person due to ptsd. Man what a combo. It makes for late nights when you put the two together. I have to calm my self down at times and just focus lets say on two things instead of like five. It is done liek this so my mind won't race. It's hard at times but works.

I think I am getting what you're saying about concentrating on two things instead of five. While I do a lot of things simultaneously, sometimes I don't really finish all of them. Lessening it could definitely help in reducing the late night that follows. Thanks for the response.
