Honey in place of an antibiotic ointment for wounds?

Has anyone heard of this? I've been reading up on how this can be used on wounds that are stubborn to heal or to help keep wounds from getting infected. Other than the articles I have yet to hear of anyone doing this. But I thought it was interesting as honey is a naturally occuring substance. Have you tried or heard of doing this? http://www.nature.com/news/2002/021119/full/news021118-1.html

I actually never heard this and can see where it keeps the wound moist and not dry. This is quite interesting and someday may try it and see if it helps with healing faster.

Grandma used to smear honey on our scratches and welts and it worked really well. I think honey has a lot more beneficial properties than we're generally aware of. The old folks knew a lot of things that we could use today. Grandpa also told me that letting a dog lick a wound would make it heal faster. I always did that and never had trouble with anything healing.

Honey has many benifits. It is is good for cold flu, common cold and cough, throat infection and what not.It is also good for our health, skin, face. But it should be taken in a proportionate quantity because too much of it will harm our health.Specially in summer it should not be taken on regular basis. But in winter taking 1 teaspoon honey will work as an antibiotic.

Exactly Dragon! Old fashioned remidies are a good place to start especially with especially with people not being able to afford medical care or co-pays right off the bat.

Yes I have heard this before. I think It was on the Dr Oz Show. He claimed honey is being used in hospitals after surgery. It's the raw honey that has so many benefits. There is a honey called manuka honey that comes from New Zealand and comes from the manuka flowers that is very therapeutic for a large number of problems. It is good for any thing from acme to cancers. http://www.manukahoneybenefits.biz/therapeutic-benefits-regarding-the-manuka-honey/

I heard a long time ago that honey, being a pure food does not grow bacteria. I'm not talking about store bought honey but honey straight from the hive. Even supermarket honey does not go bad or get mouldy...it will crystallise with age but it does not go bad. When my dog suffered a dreadful wound to her leg, the vet would put honey on the wound whenever the dressings were changed.

ya i heard about honey. It is full of nature's best ingredients. I used it for cough and for face pack. If honey and lime juice rub on the face it gives a natural glow to the face. i

The web link you hsave provided referres to anti boiotic resistant bugs. I am surprised about this as bees for example are keen on honey. As for using it on our own wounds I don't see a reason why this would be a problem. Honey is also quite healthy and it can be used in things like a mug of lemsip to help us recover from a cold.

I find this very interesting. I really wish that there would be products available that would promote healing and not have side effects. I have heard of using honey with other natural ingredients for helping with coughs and stuff so I believe that there is no reason that it shouldn't help with wounds. I just wish that the pharmaceutical industry would disappear so that doctors might be more willing to "go back to basics". Thanks for sharing this!

Well I've been using honey to cure cough so I need not be surprised if this could replace antibiotic. This substance is really helpful but I would say it must be pure and raw to be really effective. If you buy those commercial grade which are diluted with sugar, it will not really serve the purpose.

Yes, I have heard of this. I was brought up on the stuff. Honey, in its nature form, is very nutrition. Royal jelly and different deriviatives of honey are full of vitamins. Very good for alot of things. I always eat and cook with honey. I brew sun tea and put honey in it. Very tasty.

I have never heard of this before. I think I would be worried about the smell attracting bees lol. But definately worth looking in to as an alternative if the usual remedies have run out.

I wrote an article on honey once, and found that in my research. I haven't tried it though. I mean, sticky! Thing is, I always keep neosporin or other antibiotics around so why would I put something icky on there if the other stuff works? Maybe there are people who won't use any product unless it is in their kitchen cabinet.

I know Honey has a lot of healing abilities as well as it has good immune powers. But this is something really interesting about honey. I will have to find out how effective it is compared to antibiotics and ointment. Nature has really a lot of things that we can make use of. I think more investments has to be done to explore new secrets of nature healing

I've heard about it but i haven't tried it on my wound. I have a honey and oatmeal scrub for my face and it does wonders in moisturizing it and removing some skin problems. I have tried honey cider vinegar and it kept me away from getting sick plus the fact that it helped me with my urinary tract infection too. So i guess it's true that they work well as antibiotic.

Wow, this information is helpful. At least you don't have to buy an antibiotic to treat your wound. Antibiotics are so expensive, while honey is affordable and it could be eaten as it is. It has other wonderful effects on our body too. Thank you for sharing it with us.

I know that honey are sometimes use in hospitals to promote wound healing. The fact that it can help in curing Methicillin Resistant Infections is amazing. It only means that it is better than the best antibiotics in the market minus the side effects. The fact that real honey have no expiration only proves that no pathogens can thrive in them. The only problem is the availability of natural and pure honey because most honeys sold in supermarkets have only little amount of honey with them.Mostly are made by sugar syrup with additional honey. They said that real honey will remain it's natural consistency even when place in a refrigerator.

Yes I have heard about that on the Lifestyle channel on THE DOCTORS tv show. I was amazed. Now we know that there is more to this sweet thing. And we have the option to choose the natural in healing our wounds rather than deteriorating our immunity with antibiotic medicines.

I have done a home experiment on this actually. I put some honey on bread and saw how long it took to get mouldy. It didn't. I've got some theory on it, and if you want some details, you can either PM me or just e-mail me at dymoblade@gmail.com I don't know about wounds though, but it should help with preventing infections.
