I have this older computer, and I use it mostly surf the web, or download mp3 whenever I have time. I don't use it mainly for my other online activities, I simply want to keep an extra computer at home, when I have time, I would turn it on. Lately, it is acting up. I did use it to download some mp3 music for p2p site, but when I turn it on for a long while, like more than 4 hours or so, it would automatically turn it off itself; then restart it. I then continue to use it, it will automatically turn off and restart in cycle. I have to turn it off and cool down for at least 8 hours or more. Then I can use it normally. What would that be the problem? It wasn't about any virus attack as it seems; because after I cool it down, I can use it normally to surf and download again. What other reason behind this? I remember when I first bought it 6 years ago, I can use it for 3 days in a roll without turn it off. Now, what is wrong with it? Any idea?

Old computers that are exposed to P2P networks are always susceptible to malware infections. I would suggest cleaning and adding some computer fans to rule out the overheating but if its still the same thing, I would suggest scanning the computer first while disconnected from the Internet then updating Windows. If all else fails, create an NTFS partition, back-up all your files on a separate drive and clean install your operating system. Should this fail again, you might want to look at your hardware starting from the Memory, videocard to motherboard.

My pc also does the same thing .it restarts automatically without any notification and starts to boot again from the beginning .later i found out that its a ram problem .You have to adjust ram frequency to lower frequency like 200Mhz or 266Mhz if its in auto mode switch it to a lower frequency like mentioned above and your pc will do good. and also don't overclock your cpu frequency.

hi kingparker.
oh That's normal for a year old computer. Some of its components or hardwares are already due to expirations. Like:
CMOS Battery. You must have to change that already. CMOS batteries usually expire to three or four years. The battery is flat a type battery in your computer motherboard, it is just like those batteries you find in some wrist watches. Symptoms of that, the clock or the timer are constantly changing to previously default factory clock or time setup. It also causes automatically shutoff the computer. Once the CMOS Battery already expired or drained its charge, some of components on the computer needed this when the computer power shutdown completely without the battery those components will always resets to default setup.
Heat is one of the main reasons why computers shutoff automatically. This is a precautionary measures to prevent from overheating or damage the computer's motherboard. These due to lack of exhaust, blowers or ventilations to minimize accumulations of heat inside the computer. Dusts residues also the causes of heat. Just clean the dusts residues inside the computer.
Electrical groundings or short circuits of some components. Open up the computer case, just plug-out and then plug-in components. If you have still floppy disk drive attached and you have a USB connections, you can remove the floppy disk drive because it is unusable already. Other components that are already not using anymore, don't plug it anymore like an internal CD or DVD Drive.
The cooling paste on the main processor are already or maybe dried especially if your processor is an Intel.
Other component maybe also the cause, like the power supply but that is the last thing to put it in mind.

Hi, first of all, If your computer shuts down due to thermal overheating, it would say so in the next start up attempt.
Just follow simple steps:-
1) open the cpu cabinet, do a little housekeeping like wiping the dust and spider webs.
2) check all the power points to make sure there is no sparking and power fluctuation.
3) Check the RAM, Just unplug it and replug.
4) Check all the cables connected to computer ports.
Now, Switch on the computer. See if it works fine. If not then get it checked by a Hardware Tech expert.

Hi there.
I think your computer seems to be old. You know what, computer is like a human. At first, you can use it for a long time. But, if it gets old, the operating system became weaker. Maybe some hardware of your computer is malfunctioning, and need to be changed.
Maybe there is also a problem with your BIOS. BIOS is use to set up the hardware and load the operating system.
I think it is advisable to check it up with a technician. Or you should buy a new one. I'ts all up to you.
Thanks, hope I helped.

A computer that turns off without warning is often a heat related issue. Many omputers today are designed to turn off or automatically reboot if the computer, processor, or other device in your computer gets too hot. If you have heard any abnormal noises coming from your computer. Recently such as a high squealing, this could indicate a fan may be failing in your
computer.
You can first start by verifying the fan on
the power supply is working by examining
the back of the computer and seeing if the
fan is moving and moving smoothly. For all
other fans in the computer, you will need to
either open the computer and make sure the
fan are working (processor fan and case
fans) and if your BIOS monitors the RPM of
the fans, enter BIOS and make sure the
BIOS does not report any errors.
While inside the computer it's also a good
idea to verify the processor heatsink is
properly connected by disconnecting and
reconnecting the heatsink. If the processor
heatsink is not properly attached to the
processor the computer to overheat.
OR use an external fan or remove the box of the CPU making it breath cool ...

I have had that happen to mine before also. I took my tower apart and the fan wheel was clogged with dust, which made it overheat. You have to blow it out with a can of air and it should work fine afterwards.

First thing that comes to mind, like they said below me overheating. The system is trying to product and perserve the hardware, therefore shuts down, but since you didn't shut it down manually it sometimes might auto-restart because it wasn't told to do otherwise. But, try using it less often, instead of hours at a time and use windows update.
If a computer is out of use for an extended period of time the first time it senses an internet connection it will automatically start downloading and installing needed updates in the background. Unless you have this option disabled.... it'll do it automatically. So either disable auto-update, or bare in mind more often then not updates require a restart which will often occour without warning unless you're sitting there watching it. Is it safe to assume when you start this downloading process, that you leave it to do it's own thing while you use another machine for other online activities?
