Split Pea Soup

A friend of mine gave us a couple bags of the dried split peas. I have no idea what to do with them. I have used the dried beans before where you have to let them sit in water for 24 hours before cooking. Is the same method used with the peas? And then what? I have tried split pea sup before long time ago and it was pretty good. Is this the main thing that the dried peas are for? Anyone good with soups?
