Everybody knows what respect means, it may be acquired due to situational basis, sometimes matter due to cultural ethics and it can also be earn by doing good things.
From the country that I belong, cultural ethics plays important rule in gaining respect and some of it is not justifiable anymore.
For instance in my situation, would you respect elders from you even if they are not respecting you as a person? Although I lived in a conservative country where in moral ethics play a big rule portraying respect, I think its not justifiable just because the culture say we have to follow, even if their doings are wrong. I dont think They have to own my respect just because they are older than me, because no matter how old you are ,respect should be given to everybody equally right and its not in the age.
Specially when their doings are wrong but most just ignore it here since their old its a valid reason that been seen by younger ones and tought to be right and it became a cycle.

YES it's hard. But we can always try show some respect to them to wake them up to respect you. Since respect should come to both party; you respect a person and in return they should respect you as an individual.

I am a noble person. I value respect highly. In return I also want others including elders to respect me. I support their doings except if its wrong then I have to pin point out. Not that elders are always right.

Your definitly correct, everybody is not perfect and it doesn't mean if your old, your always right. Many would say that children these days are out of control and disrespectful in fact youngs like kids just immitate what the older people do, because in the eye of the children the doings of older people are always right. Older people should serve as a model.

Hola hola there,
Yup, norms and customs are still strong, especially in the eastern world. We always respect older people regardless of their background, at least it still be found in some rural areas. To be honest in an urban, it's already fading.
For me personally, I always respect people older than me, but sometimes there are always people who are arrogant and insulting, for whatever reason, I will not respect people who do not respect me.
Wish you all the best

Well, I respect everyone even if they don't respect me. Why? Because that way I can show them and prove to them that I am a respectful person since I respect them even if thy are not respectful at all. Why would they not respect me as a human unless they don't know what respect is?
ALso, I'll do that in order to try to keep peace between us and hope that someday they respect me. Everybody deserves respect. We should do what we want others to do to us. If we want respect, we should respect others.

As human being I know that we are not perfect and sometimes our temper controls us, making us disrespectful to our elders. But we have to control our temper and still show respect respect to our elders to earn respect from them too. In a case that elders still don't show respect to us, well, communication is the best remedy.Ask them WHY they don't respect you?

Nobody is going to respect a criminal simply because he's older - that is one example. I think respect is something that should be mutual, and something earned, not something that should be based on age. Kids can have parents who beat them, and there is not a thing that's respect-worthy in that.
