Swallowing Watermelon Seeds

When I was younger, I used to take the effort to spit out each black watermelon seeds, when they are there. But now I just swallow them. It's really inconvenient to have to spit them out. It's also harmless. I think many of us may have been told as children that if we eat watermelon seeds, we will grow a watermelon plant in our stomach. Of course that's impossible, because there is no sun and just lots of acid in the stomach. Supposedly the seeds come out the other end when it comes to animals, unharmed so they grow where they are laid, in the fertilizer, conveniently, though I'm not sure if watermelon seeds emerge unharmed in humans out the other end!

I was also told the same thing by my parents never swallow any big or small seeds because it would grow inside my body.. Recently, I saw an episode in Grey's Anatomy that a man has a growing tree inside his lungs. He was operated thinking that the man has a tumor on his lung to their surprise it was A VERY SMALL TREE w/ roots! It was told that he might inhaled one kind of a seed in a farm that he was exposed for a few months...i guess it is possible so be on a safe side..don't swallow any seed, who knows what will happen?! happy posting!:D

I don't think that is possible. Plants need sunlight right? :D I still don't eat the seeds because they're too big to swallow and if you bite them they taste nasty.

I do not think you should be eatting seeds. Also good idea to get seeds out when cutting up the fruit so do not have to keep spitting up lots of seeds or swollowing them.

There is an old wives tale that says eating watermelon seeds helps with high blood pressure. I don't eat those watermelon seeds, however I'm sure a few get by us all.

I just thought this was too funny and so cute. I don't know that I will start swallowing watermelon seeds though. I hadn't heard the one about them growing in your belly, but that is a story for me to use on my daughter. I'll correct her when she's older and can understand, lol. I dunno, she might be fully able to comprehend this now. She's so smart. Even smarter than I at times. Maybe if we do swallow them we could plant them if they come out unharmed, ewwwwww. They would already have the fertilizer, ROFLMBO!!

Yes, that's a funny thinking that seeds will grow inside our tummy.Sometimes we do swallowed seeds coz some are too small to be notice.I guess the best thing to do is pick the seeds out first before before eaten watermelon.

I would stick to spitting out the seeds, it is hard for your stomach to digest. Get seedless watermelon so you dont have to worry about this.

Well at least now I can stop worrying about watermelon vines growing out of my ears and nose. As far as how the seeds fair on the tail end of the journey, I let someone else figure that out.

You are right about the watermelon seeds, they are annoying esp. when I am trying to get rid of my thirst by eating a piece of sweet nice watermelon. But even though I think they are troublesome to spit out, I still spit most of them out when I am eating a watermelon. I know that the seeds in our stomach are not going to grow a plant---what our stomach mainly contains is HCL--- but I spit out the black (mature) seeds and swallow the white seeds which are soft. I think our stomach is also omnipotent sometimes. I can still remember that whenI was very young I was once given a pack of gums---y'know, the thing to chew in the mouth for better breath, for fun, and for whatever---I ate them all without spit them out afterwards. That seemed no harm to me, as I grow up.

Outside of the myth when I too was a child that we would grow a tree in our belly I really never gave it much thought. lol.. I suppose we digest them and eventually they come out as I personally have not heard of it being harmful. I usually take them out before I chew into the watermelons but I am sure one probably escapes and in the belly it goes. lol

Seeds growing in the tummy... yeah, my parents used to say that to me, too. :) While it seem pretty easy to just swallow all the watermelon seeds, I also think it is much better for you to take out the seeds first before eating it - that way you can get to enjoy the watermelon and not be bothered by the little seeds. Chewing on the seeds might be a little annoying (personally speaking), and I think the tummy can't fully digest the seeds, it might cause some tummy problems, we never know. So, just to be on the safe side, I think you should just take the seeds out before enjoying your watermelon.
