What causes insomnia?

Traffic, noisy neighbors and battered old mattresses are frequently blamed, but among the commonest reasons for insomnia are anxiety and depression. Most people having trouble sleeping suffered from emotional difficulties. Physical ailments, especially if they cause breathlessness, fever or pain, can also make it difficult to sleep, and so can the drugs used to treat asthma, high blood pressure, and other diseases. In others, the trouble may come from working the night shift, going to bed and getting up at irregular hours, or napping at daytime.
Over the long run, sleeping pills, especially barbiturates, are apt to make insomnia worse rather than do better.

I am a horrible sleeper and always have been. Being pregnant I do get tired a whole lot more than I normally would. So I do sleep some. Maybe this will make me a better sleeper for in the future to lol. I still keep my computer on 24/7 cause I am constantly getting up and on it.

Oh you need enough rest for your baby my dear. I am due this September. There is one complication though.I have a low-lying placenta. In fact, I am lying down typing and lying on one side with my head resting on my left hand. Haha. God bless us both during labor.

Try inhaling the fresh leaves of Sweet Basil (scientific name Ocimum Basilicum). It can relax, is mildly sedative, and can induce sleep. You can buy potted Sweet Basil plants at organic stores.
You can also eat banana before you go to bed.

Growing Sweet Basil in the Philippines is not difficult. It's well adapted to the climate here. Its relative, "Sangig," (scientific name Ocimum Basilicum, variety Citriodorum) has been with the Cebuanos since time immemorial, perhaps before they were even called Cebuanos.
"Baho-Baho" (roughly translated "Smelly Plant," scientific name Ocimum Sanctum) or Sacred or Holy Basil grows wild in Davao Oriental. It's sacred to the Hindus.
All Basils are mildly sedative, relax and induce one to sleep.
The various organic markets in Metro Manila may sell potted Basil.

Thank you so much for the info. I'll try to look for some basil here because I am in Cebu. My mother used to work at shangrila as cook. Perhaps she knows where to get this herb. I know sangig and love it in my vegetable dishes. I love smelling it too. In fact i have sangig planted in my yard. Best regards.

If I've got too much on my mind, I can't sleep. I have to empty my brain out to sleep peacefully. I don't like when I can't sleep and I want to go either. It is annoying to know one needs rest and they cannot obtain it. What are some ways to deal with this insomnia? Have you done any further research on it? I don't like taking pills of any kind really. I think the world is over medicated. I like natural remedies. Let me know if you come up with anything.

It is really is annoying. This happens to me sometimes when I got so much in my mind that I can't sleep. But I do take a glass of warm milk and a banana ( I regularly eat bananas anyway) before going to bed. Chamomile tea will also be really calming, or listening to mellow music. Just relax and try not to think of anything but sleeping. One mylot response said to inhale some basil leaves. I hope this works for you. Good luck!

in my opinion, there are two major reasons to cause insomnia, one is the physical reason ,and the other is the psychological reason.I think the latter one takes the most of part.nervous, anxious, suspicious and many other mental factors make the brain difficult to relax,i don't agree to take medicine to treat the insomnia, because that will results in addiction.Doing sports ,listening some light music and have a health diet is better than taking medicine, unless the insomnia is very serious ,they should not easy to take medicine.

I do suffer from insomnia too. What I would usually do in order for me to fall asleep is read books. It clears my mind. I think, if I'm depressed, a good novel will ease it.
I'm scared that it will grow a little more serious. Sometimes, if I don't have a good sleep because of insomnia, my under eyebags would look dark and my skin just felt like dry. :(
