I heard T-Mobile has a phone for 1000 minutes for one year for 100$. Has anyone used it and is it reliable? I want a phone for just emergency useage. This plan is less than 10 per month. Has anyone tried it and do you know of any other plan that is similar?

I hadn't heard of that offer, I would definitely look at the coverage maps for the area you live. Assurance has a plan if you're on any type of public assistance. Sprint has Lifeline (low income) rates vary depending on state. it offers nights and weekends free at 9pm. Not assuming it's an income issue. Not sure what at&t offers but I do think they have a senior plan for emergency use. Whoever you go with, just check coverage. If you're using it for emergencies, you don't want to lose service when you need it the most. Good Luck!

Thanks. I will see what coverage I have in the cell my hubby picked up. Personally I think T-Mobile was a better plan, but he was unhappy with my being even a few days without a cell. LOL years ago neither of us have one now he can't go anywhere without his.

I have not had T-mobile in a long time and what I can remember is a lot of drop calls which is why I switched. I do have a few acquaintances here who have it and do not like it for the same reasons, but because of their contracts they are stuck with them. Not sure if they have improved since but find out if you can exchange and or refund in a certain time period so you are not locked in for the full year if there are problems. This is what I would do this way if not so great you can switch to something else later. Best of luck.

Interesting..well it's a mute point now. Yesterday my husbeand went out and bought an inexpensive phone with limited minutes for the next 3 months. LOL I will use that and see how it works out. It's a brnd I never heard ofTracfone, so I hope it doesn't drop my calls.

I went with a "Pay as you go" model. That way, I just charge up my credit with a bit of cash and it's there when I need it - no monthly costs or any extras. Worth looking into for a very basic "emergency-only" setup!

I think that is a good plan. That's the idea I had in mind.

Well, I don't know where you live, but if you receive any type of public assistance, the government will give you a phone for free. It may not be the fanciest but if all you need is emergency usage then this could work. They give you 250 free minutes. For $5 more you can get an extra 250 or $20 will get you an extra 750. If you can get a 1000 minutes from T-mobile for $10 I would go with that if you can afford it. I don't care much for T-mobile service, but for an emergency use only phone it's good.

I was not aware of public assistance giving cell phones. I think this could be a waste of taxpayer money, unless of course there is some extenuating circumstance where a cell can be justified. If there is a medical need I could see the government helping out but as I understand it, that's not the case. Good grief what did people do before they had cells?? I too wonder just what percentage of calls made are true emergencies???

i am saving money to switch my account to Boost Mobile. They are backed by Sprint. Go to www.BoostMobile.com You can read everythng about them to fit your style of phone usuage you want. When you start with them its 50.00 a month for service every 6months you pay on time, Boost will drop 5.00 from your account when you stay on time with payments, every six months it will drop 5,00, until it reaches 35.00. Not to many contract phone companies offer anything like that. So I am waiting til my son and I can both get a phone and then go get our Boost hooked up and then have T-Mobile dropped. Check into it they haver some pretty awesome phones. Good luck with your search for a phone.

I appreciate you taking time to give me the info. I think I want cheaper than even 35 per month. With my last cell I just used it for emergencies. I could call my land and pick up messages. I no longer have the job where I need to be accessible all the time so I am looking to stay away from cells for the majority of my phone usage.

There are free phones out there. I have one and get a small amount of free minutes every month. I picked even smaller minute option per mouth but I get the option for rollover. I use it for important phone calls like for doctor apointments. I am so glad I have it. When I have my baby I know I will appreciate having the phone even more. Mine is a tracfone.

AHA!!! That is what my hubby picked up for me yesterday. Are you happy with it...have you had it long? Does it drop calls?? Congrats on the baby, when is it due?? What an excellent idea for an expecting mother and that would be a terrific gift for a baby shower for someone who doesn't have a cell. Best wishes on you delivery and I hope it is quick and easy for you!!

Come to think of it..my phone wasn't free...hmmm. LOL ....but it was cheap $15, plus he bought 60 minutes for $20 for 3 months use. I think there are better deals, but since he went to the trouble, I'll use this first.

Thank you. my baby girl is due in October. I seen the phone I got in a store for 10 dollars. However, mine was free sent through mail from the website for person of low income. At the beginning of each month as long as the phone is on minutes are sent to the phone for that month. It is a cheap made phone but that's why it is ether cheap to buy or available for free. I have had it for most of my pregnancy so far. I think its great for free. I would not pay for it probably though.
