Police: Mercenaries of Law?

Well, my friends were talking about how there was this obscure (it was almost out of their sight) "NO LEFT TURN" sign on one of those traffic lights. There are so many people who don't see that sign and accidentally turn left. There's this officer stationed at a BP station who waits like an alligator and then strikes when a poor b***ard does that left turn, giving the victim a fine, even though he turned without seeing the sign. This led me to think that nowadays, laws are just made to not only control society, but to give the government some money to hog on and use to do some unreasonable government crap, which in turn also funds police officers. What do you guys think the law is up to?

In my opinion, the law and its agents are striving to maintain peace and order. It does not mean that the law itself and its agents are morally and always right. The policeman, perhaps aware of his too human instincts instead of the ideology he upholds, can be judged as right or wrong but ether is no use in generalizing an intuitionist based on the actions of the few. You have a point in your statement that the law is an agent to control society. It is the function of the law and why it was established in the first place. But it is not perfect and it can be manipulated (a reason why criminals get to hire their lawyer of choice). There is also no such things as a perfect law or society, if there is, it's in some fiction work. The law and police are not perfect but most of them try to do good for the benefit of the majority. It's not the barrel's fault if there is a rotten apple in its contents.
