Proper friends means true friends. They are those who are with you through thick and thin. They are friends who will not lead you to commit bad behavior. They are friends who don't back stab you and they love you , as you are.

Well, I suppose it could mean a great deal for each person. But I think it would be taken to mean true friends. The ones that stick by you no matter what you do, what is going on in your life and despite your ups and downs they are always there with no judgment.
