its been raining here on and off. this morning it started early. but i didnt hear any thunder like the usual rains.
but tonight, i get startled so easily because it seems that the thunder is just there on the other neighbor's house. i mean it roars so big and mighty, and it sure is noisy and then it gets followed by a very bright flashing of the lightning. and i dont have anyone i can cling to when it does.. poor me. just have to hold on to the pillow when the flash and the roar comes.
kidding aside, when i am startled both by thunder or lightning.. it is either i close my eyes really tight and cover my ears.
if you see a woman experiencing thunder but i have noticed that men are not that affected by lightning and the roaring thunder.
h[b]ave you noticed it too? do you have explanation why that is so?

I think it may be more conditioning than nature. I'm female and thunder has never startled me--in fact, I sleep better when it is storming and thundering. I look at a storm as a fantastic presentation from the heavens, entertaining and exhilarating. Of course, I don't like it much when it causes the power to fail but I never get tired of enjoying God's light show.
In fact, I don't know any woman of my acquaintance who is startled by thunder. Maybe we have more storms here in the U.S. than you do in your home country so we're used to it since birth.

hi dragon,
i am surprised by the answer. honest!
but thinking now, i guess your last sentence is the answer. i have never experienced a storm in my entire life. the philippines is visited by storms but our place is never affected. all we get is rain but not that howling wind.
thank you. have a nice day

That is what I was going to say dragon, that I sleep the best during a thunderstorm. We had one a couple days ago and I slept in later than usual..
tiger, I think my non-fear of thunder also has to do with my dad. I would be afraid until one day he told me to watch for the lightening, and when the lightening lights up, I know to prepare for the BANG of thunder. So you say thunder then lightening, that isn't correct, lightening strikes first. I also know this because when we count the time between the lightening and the thunderstorm, we can calculate how far away the storm is.. It's actually pretty cool and I saw more storms are due in later this week, I can't wait..

I'm tempted to go outside and enjoy it, in fact, one night we opened all the windows in the back of the house, turned out the lights and just enjoyed the show...
I am female, I might jump if it comes suddenly or a "flash/bang" of a nearby strike, but on the whole I like thunderstorms.

hello elic,
there was one time when our whole family went to the beach and rented a cottage. night time we saw flashing in the sky but we didnt hear the thunder. but it was far away, somewhere in the sea. that i enjoyed watching.
but when lightning and thunder is near where i am, although i know it is not that near, i most of the time feel like jumping and covering my head with blanket when i am in bed.
thank you for your response. have a nice day.

2 things -
1- not all women are afraid of thunder and lightening
2 - a fearful response from a young girl is tolerated and thought to be amusing; while a fearful response from a young boy is not in most societies. So, fearful girls are permitted to grow up to be fearful women; but, that behavior is not tolerated from boys so they either get over their fear or they learn to hide it from others.

hi speakeasy,
not all women are afraid of thunder and lightning. i learned that here.
i have never experienced a storm in my entire life. the philippines is visited by storms but our place is never affected. all we get is rain but not that howling wind.
i agree with you about behavior. it was tolerated. when i was young it seems the older folks liked it when i was afraid. i would run to them and they hug me each time.
thank you for your response. have a nice day.

Totally agree with that. I'm female, and as a child I was scared of storms. I was mostly scared of all loud noises, but with storms it was also the chances of it turning into something more serious. It WAS just tolerated. My male cousins of the same age would be told to shut up while I was consoled or something. Horrible double standard when you think about it. I've since stopped caring about storms though. I have spent some years in an area where severe storms are more frequent. I usually go outside and watch now.

When it is just getting ready to storm I will admit that I am startled by the thunder and the lightening. However, when I know what is coming it isn't something that really startles me anymore. With that said, we had one heck of a storm on Friday afternoon and the thunder here was so loud that it was making our dogs think that there was someone outside knocking on our door, every time it would thunder the dogs would start barking. We probably got about 3 inches of rain in just over a half an hour.

hi dora,
i remember having made a response to your comment last night but as i checked today, i didnt find it. i wonder.
anyways, dogs really start barking when they hear thunder. i guess, they too are afraid of the sound. and i see that they go most of the times, in corners of the house where the flash of lightning is not seen much.
i guess they feel what i feel.

Don't get to excited about thunder and lightning. Turn the TV volume up and ignore it. It is not going to hurt you. Thunder is only noise and lightning is only light. I would like to capture a picture of the lightning. I am not affected at all by thunder and lightning.

hello there inertia,
i know you are right and it is very rare that a lightning strikes a house, more so a person in it.
but i just cant control my reaction to it.

It's very simple: men are more accustomed to sudden noises because they live with women, who have a tendency to explode in showers of thunder and lightning at the slightest provocation and even without warning.
(I'm kidding! )

Sweety
I am not afraid of thunders, lightenings, but yes of storms only, my wife clings to me usually, i have asked her, why she does that, she says women are like creepers, need support always, she admits she gets frightened..
Well i don't know if there is any scientific reasons behind it.
Thanks for sharing
Best of luck to you

I've never noticed actually whether being afraid of thunder has anything to do with gender!! I also get terrified in thunder storms - I always cover my head with my pillow to try dampen some of the noise and get some sleep!!!

well now i know that it has nothing to do with gender.
am very happy that men have admitted to being afraid of that kind of noise too as well as lightning.
have a great day.
