My heart goes out to the people of Oslo, Norway

Like the rest of the world, I am shocked by what has taken place in Oslo today. Norway seems to be such a placid and peaceful land. Who would have ever expected such violence to have erupted there? And the media reports seem to indicate that only one person was behind the violence. I am stunned. One person caused such violence!! At the youth camp, he killed 80 persons. How is that possible? Could no one have tackled him? I assume there were no guns on the premises but could no one have come up behind with a baseball bat or knife? More news will be coming on this. I wonder if there are any Norwegians on mylot.

I don't believe that he was alone. There are things that shock me more than the event itself. The reaction of people. They forget about those who were killed and who suffered the terror and start spreading hatred without knowing the details.I'm afraid this event can turn into something more serious.

He doesn't look like a psychopath, but since he did this, he can't be called sane anymore. Some say it has nothing to do with left/right or religion, o race.

He looks quite normal really, but he can't be sane. Although I don't think he is so mentally disturbed that it will "help" him in a trial. And nutcases can be found in every religion, nationality and political persuasion. Not sure I think he can have done it all on his own though, they've arrested someone else but the person doesn't have anything to do with the bomb or the shootings as far as they know yet.

I am glad that he was taken alive so that more information can be found out. Even if he acted alone, what groups was he involved with? Why did he select this youth camp?
In a lot of situations like this, the killer(s) often identify very strongly and passionately with a cause or religion. They sometimes believe that "the end justifies the means".
And Torunn posts that the most time he may get is 21 years in prison. It is terrifying to know that he might someday be out in society again.
Silvercoin, what reaction are the people having? What are people spreading? I am in Texas and we are getting some information but at this point, only limitted information.

His Facebook page was hacked yesterday and the "Conservative Christian" was added. Comparing his original to the altered one clearly shows this.

Who knows? Someone with an agenda, I guess. I also note that they keep saying it was "blond on blond" killings, but all the kids I saw being interviewed who were at the camp looked Middle Eastern or Indian. Not a blue eye in the bunch. I could be wrong, but that's what I saw.

No, this is a "blond on blond" killing. They might pick which pictures to show. I've seen a couple that could have been Middle Eastern (some which sounded like second generation Norwegians, one who is from Afghanistan and seeking asylum), one that could have been African but everyone else have been white westerners (although not necesseraly blonde and blue eyed).
The bloke from Afghanistan said in an interview it didn't seem like the shooter was targeting non-westerners, but shot everyone he could see. Makes sense, as he claims his aim was to kill traitors.

I also feel for the people of Norway, this man was going to kill as many people as he could......What up sets me is why is he going to have a cell with a flat screen tv, and internet service and all the comforts of home and only have to serve twenty years in jail???
I think it should be twenty years for each person he killed....You know when he gets out of there he will do it again......

Norway is so peaceful and calm that none of the young persons and their camp counselors knew how to fight back. They had never been prepared for such violence from one of their own. This country will never be the same. Nor will its citizens.

Has your heart ever bled for people of India? Of course i too send my heart felt feelings for the victims of Norway. But just recollect how many times Indian cities have been bombarded. In the last 13 years Mumbai alone has been targeted 13 times. The western people think that pain if only for them and we Indians don't have any.Its because of the US and Britain's policy of backing Pakistan that terrorism has spread over the world. They play games to suit their needs

Well, the last time there were bombings in India, I began a mylot discussion offering my sympathies and condolences to the people of Mumbai and India.
I think the situation in India is very complicated. I do not think that there is any one simple answer.
I think that The United States is a good friend and supporter of India. We have a lot of respect for the Indian people and the country. At least, that is my own opinion.

I am an American that is very unhappy with our Corporate Empire politics. There are those who profit from violence and killing.
As for the continued violence and threats between India and Pakistan, well, study your history. Mahatma Gandhi's beliefs of non-violence, love, and cooperation were only expediently adopted by the competing religious groups. Before the British had left, India broke into a civil war that resulted in India being partitioned and millions of displaced Hindus went South as Million of Muslims went North. So much for cooperation.
The only way to prevent future wars is to heal the wounds of last wars. We have a similar problem here in the United States and the hate still festers from our civil war that did not end up in our country splitting. Many who call themselves the Tea Party are white, Christian fundamentalists.

Norway is one of the most wealthy nation. I never expect that dreadful thing would happen there. I also express doubt that only one murder colud kill so many people?
We meed more detail. At that time, any reaction is understandable, you couldn'tdemand people to against the dangeous murder with the knife or baseball bat. and I do believe there were other criminals hide somewhere.
