I need help with Google Chrome

On someone's suggestion, I downloaded google chrome. I have an Apple Macbook. Well, first of all, I do not quite understand google chrome. What is it? I thought that it was a browser similar to safari or firefox. But now I am finding out that it is an application. Well, I am having some problems with it. I have a lot of computer knowledge but I am not all that tech savvy. I was unable to keep it in my dock because it stayed lit up on the bottom of the symbol and kept bouncing up and down. It is in my applications folder. It comes up when I do not want it to usually having to do with my gmail account. When I try to access some of my emails in gmail, my google chrome appears. And I HAVE to do whatever I am doing using google chrome. This happens when I have an email in gmail with an attachment or link. And I do not know how to access it when I want to such as to view certain videos. Can someone explain google chrome to me in simple layman's language? Has anyone else had problems with google chrome? And if I decide to un-install, can someone tell me how. remember that I have a mac.
