Not just social sites but computers in general make students (and everyone) lazier.
It's the same with any technology designed to make life easier. Calculators are a good example. How many shop assistants do you see using a calculator to do something like "a 10% reduction on $14.99"?
Spelling is irrelevant (Word corrects you). Research is Wikipedia. Statistics are taken by asking a question on Yahoo! Answers.
Computers and the Internet make us lazy. That's their job!

Like any technology, it's not the thing itself but how it's used that defines its effect. Computers can help make us smarter, definitely, but if they're just used (for example) to look things up and copy/paste the response without committing anything to memory, there's no benefit.

if there is no existence of a website Facebook....
i think the internet users will be a fanatic of Friendster....
expect another 5 years from now,
Friendster is totally extinct,
Facebook is a newly closed,
where there is another new social networking site will rule the whole cyberspace

myspace? it's the survival of the fittest....
but i wonder why friendster doesn't survived, instead, then tend to continue the site just like what myspace did.... poor friendster....
about youtube?
then metacafe will glad if youtube will surrender...

I must say facebook is really addictive especially since you can know what's the latest updates on the lives of other people you know. Most young people are attracted to the idea of being accepted in the society and facebook is one of the modern way to be in.

Definitely a sign of the times, I think. It is not just Facebook, I think it is technology in general that is making everyone a lot lazier. My daughter spent most of her school holidays on her laptop chatting to her friends and playing games; the rest of the time was used up on the Wii. This is on top of using calculators instead of one’s brain and not bothering with books made out of paper...

hi,
the best thing for you to do is know how to block that site so that when your students open their computer they will notice that site is blocked by the admin, and the next time they will use it they will never attempt to open that site again because they already know its blocked.

It really depends on the user. The user should be responsible on how he/she handles the advantages and disadvantages of using social networking sites. If the personality of the user is not that strong against the disadvantages of social networking, then the most likely he/she will turn out to be lazy. But yes, I do observe too that some students are really degraded due to their addiction in such sites. But the technology is something available and it can't be helped for them to use it. It will really depend on them how it can affect them.

I think Facebook is one of the worst things on the internet for these young people. They abuse it and spend alot of time on it instead of doing something constructive.

Hi adhyz: Oh definetly, some people can't control their social networks and that's a bad habitude because they are a good tool to be in contact with your friends. They are a source of entertainment too but we should have some other priorities and control our time there.

social networking becomes evil when people get addicted to it. but i cant understand how a person can get addicted to facebook. i think most of those who stay on facebook for hours and hours are the ones who play games. otherwise i dont think they will be spending a lot of time viewing their friends' pictures and post.
i dont see social networking as negative. in a way it has helped me to get connected with my family and long lost friend. everything becomes bad if used excessively. so if people use facebook in moderation then it's just fine

I do not fancy facebook from the beginning using it. then my older daughter and asome overseas friends talked me into that it is a very good website. Well I have given it a try for over a year now. I'm not that person who interacts with people to play the games on facebook like Farmville or other community games. I tried a few but I got bored after a few weeks. There are information from schools and friends what they do and what's up for events, that's interesting. But I did manage without facebook before I jonied.
About laziness; most technology make life more convenient. It is fast to send e-mail, than to send postal mail.
One thing which is good with internet and high technology are when there is emergency; like tsunamies, earthquakes, floods, war etc.... when internet and cell phones are saving lives. People can have a fast and effective communication to take action.

Sure many students are more interested on social network. Because at study period, they sure have many friends and wanna to know new friends. At their life, friends are very important. After married, job and family is more important.
I don't think social network will make students become lazy, just depend on what they do on facebook. But i think facebook would make lazy student become more lazy. Because facebook have too many game there, i see many student is always play game on facebook. And sometime can't online, then they will play other game.
But some student still have very well self control, they are no touch any game on facebook.
for starting, i also have play many game on facebook. Now i no play at all, i feel this too waste my time. Got one day i sure will stop my game, why i so afford on it? It isn't my future!

There is definitely some truth in what you say. I know with many young people today, facebook is certainly one of the only things that they are interested in on the internet. It is quite sad to see how obsessed people become with facebook - I must say that I used to be just as addicted, but I have seen the light now and do not spend nearly as much time on facebook anymore as i once did!

I can't blame them because I believe they use Fb or twitter to increase their social life. Don't worry too much because there is time for them to find useful information (as long they can use computer of course) to increase their intellectual brain.

Yeah, you are right.
Student's of today's generation seems to prioritize facebook more than searching.
I also observed that in my children.
I tried to advise them, it is not always good to use facebook but they take the chance when I am not at home.
That worries me too.

Using facebook may have positive and negative effect to the person who is using it. I believe most people who uses it are students. I, myself, is a student too. I admit that facebook is very influential nowadays to one's life. A lot are facebook addicts.
There should be discipline to ourselves in order for us not to be obsessed in using facebook. Minimize the time allotted with this networking site and focus on studies. This is my advice for my fellow students. Facebook is good but let us not overdo it.
