Reading and falling asleep

I hate it that everytime I read a book, I fall asleep. The books I have are all interesting, their bestsellers actually and they range from different story - romance, comedy, classic, vampires, suspense, thriller. I pick real good ones. But everytime I read, I could only last for like three pages because I fall asleep!! And it happens all the time, I hate it!! I tried different reading positions, even different times and different areas around the house and nothing works. It's inviting sleep, I do not know why! Please, if you can suggest something, please post it away my friends. Thanks!

Your eyes may easily tire, so try to put a patch of green in the place you use as your reading room or venue. Look at the green spot every time your eyes feel tired. Green relaxes the eyes.
Rub your eyes every time you finish a page or two. This serves to exercise and invigorate your eyes. Then get up and walk about.
Read books that have big letters.
Use straight-backed chair to lessen the temptation of settling down to sleep. Read immediately after you have had a full and satisfying night's sleep. This will require a change of personal schedule, habits, and biorhythm.
Read books that you think are vital to you that day, to your work, business, and profession. Reading purely for entertainment only will not put your biorhythm on an active mode. If you have had a very busy schedule and hectic week, it may be your body's way of telling you, "hey, take a much needed rest!"
So the questions is: do you get enough rest and sleep from your present work? Do you need the time for reading for much needed rest and sleep?

Hi! Those are nice suggestions. Will try them, except for the position thing. I tried that already and I still fell asleep. Your question if I have enough rest and sleep, I believe yes I have. I sleep 6-7 hours, with nap time of 20-30 minutes in the office aside from the one hour break for lunch and two more coffee breaks in the afternoon. I am not tired most of my days actually. I read because I love books, but it always invites sleep.
Thanks for the response, have a good day and happy mylotting!

I have a tenancy to get sleepy while reading as well! I think it's because my eyes are so focused on one area for a long time. I know that reading will make me sleepy though, so I tend to try and read right before bed or if I don't mind taking a nap. If I'm not at all tired, then reading doesn't tend to make me as sleepy. So for example reading in the morning/early afternoon doesn't make me quite as sleepy as reading at night does.

Hi!! At least you were able to read without getting sleepy during the day or afternoon. Sadly, that does not work on me either. How sad, right? During weekends, of when I do not have to go to the office, I also try to read in the morning or in the afternoon and the same thing happens to me.
Good day and thanks for the response!!

Maybe there is a problem with your eyes on reading texts. I suggest you go see a doctor to check it up. Maybe try to read after you exercise. This might help to get you lively with your reading. Another ridiculous suggestion would be to drink an energy drink before you read a book. I think I am quite sure that you won't be a sleepy head once you intake a good energy drink.

The energy drink suggestion is funny! I suddenly imagined a scenario wherein I am reading and due to the energy drink, I found myself lifting weights while reading, or playing badminton while reading, or doing aerobics while reading... LOL... but then I also realized that I can actually do some reading while running in the threadmill! So, one of these days, I will try that too!!
Thanks for the response! Happy mylotting!

Agent's two suggestions are mine as well. Reading puts a big strain on the eyes even when your vision is perfect, so if it isn't, that's an even bigger energy drain. So maybe you should have your vision tested.
As to the other point--I often read on the treadmill, stationary bike, between sets of laps at the pool, etc. That might be a way to train your mind/body to relax to the point of sleepiness when you are reading.
Good luck!

I thought I was the only one! I like to read but it takes me forever to get through a book because I always fall asleep too. And when I pick it up to read again I have to re read because I don't remember a lot of what I read half asleep. Haha. I've found that reading outside has helped a lot. Maybe it's something about the fresh air, sun shining, and birds chirping. If that doesn't work you can always try audio books, but if you're like me you like the feel of turning the page and actually reading the book yourself.

well, reading is supposed to be a pleasure. do not push yourself too much to be able to finish reading. if your body does not allow you to go on reading, respect it as your comprehension of what you read may suffer, and so the enjoyment of reading. well, what i do is to read different things at different times. when i read academic materials, i read them in the morning. when i read novels and other materials of pleasurable reading, i read them during bed time. enjoy reading.

This is a good suggestion too. Next time, I will read my business materials in day time (weekends only for I have office on weekdays), and books that are for entertainment purposes during night time.
Thanks for the response, have a good day, and happy mylotting!

Have you tried right after you wake up? Maybe drinking coffee while you read, or playing music? Something else to distract you while you read so it's not just the words, but so you can still comprehend them? I'm not sure what else to suggest, you could try not reading for awhile and then going back to it, see if it has changed, it may change for a bit but then go back to the same ol' same ol'.

I have not tried reading right after I wake up because I do have a lot of things in mind (especially the things I need to accomplish for the day) so reading a book right after I woke up is next to impossible. Even if I do not have work for the day, my mind is focused on what chores I have to finish, so reading takes a back seat. I only grab the book during my free time. Most likely in the evening before going to bed, or in the afternoon when I do not have anything to do anymore. But problem is, it makes me want to go to sleep after just a few pages.
Thanks for the suggestion, have a good day!

go watch tv instead!!! lol!
seriously ellovire, those are really good suggestions here. one thing i would add is to take a break from reading after two or three pages. walk around or just change positions. this works wonders for me.
cheers!!!

Well, you are at least better than I--I fell asleep before I could even finish one page! Maybe you can try standing up while you are reading. It is not the most effective way to keep somebody from falling asleep, but give it a try!

If that is the case, then maybe you could take a cup of coffee first before you begin reading. And see to it that you are well seated not reclined , because if you are reclined the tendency is to fall asleep.

I can definitely relate to this!!! you know what, because i fall asleep whenever i read, i've made reading my personal tranquilizer. now, i read TO sleep!,, if you like to read than to sleep, i suggest you drink coffee before or while reading.. or if you don't like coffee, apple juice can do,, or why dont you try eating an apple while reading?--it's packed with caffeine which will surely keep you awake! :)

hi 7thspring!! I did not know that apples have caffeine, thanks for the info!! It's nice to learn something new everyday. Anyways, good thing that you found the right way to fall asleep, which is to read. In my case, I hate that I get sleepy everytime I read. I will try the apple thing, hope it works for me.
Thanks for the response. Happy mylotting and good day!

yeah i guess that is true mostly if you read about your next topic in class. for me the most boring book i have ever read that makes me fall asleep is history. oooppppsss...forgive me but honestly, history books always makes me fall asleep. i just don't know why but maybe i love history but history doesn't love me.

I love reading and learning history and it does not bore me. Problem is, whatever topic of my book is, I still get sleepy. No matter how hard I fight my sleep, it still wins over me. I hate it already, but that is always the case.
Thanks for the response! Good day to you and enjoy mylot!

you know what I have this best friend of mine who is entirely opposite to me. I mean she loves history which is completely opposite to me. but it does not that i don't love it its just that it is not my field of interest maybe because every time i read about it, it becomes my sleeping pills. maybe because we have our differences.

Does this work for you? I will try this, hope it works. I need to set the alarm to wake me up though, or else, I might enjoy sleeping and forget that it's just supposed to be an hour of sleep in preparation for my reading time.
Thanks for the suggestion, hope it works!

I find that reading results in sleeping for me also. I just get so relaxed probably because I am so focused on the material I am reading. I found that if I want to really learn something and remember it, I read right before I want to sleep. Then I tend to dream about the material I have read, thus remembering the material much better. This helped me so much when I was studying.
