Surfing is when viewing data over browsers like IE or Firefox - Your browser temporarily stores html, php css files etc as this is how you see websites and makes loading websites faster for the current session. normally when you shutdown those files are lost or deleted unless you have asked it to "download" the websites files which is not recommended as people make changes to websites all the time and you will never see them if you always access it from a local source. Downloading is when you save a file or document directly to your hard drive in and until you delete it, it will be available. This can be pretty much anything from films to binary code.

:) I think the thing that was confusing ravalarun is that browsers "download" which really means storing files temp (They should not of called it downloading but its the general reference for storing information on your computer from another source) once you view a website like the css file, so you dont have to reload everything once your say go from the home page to the about us... your browser just loads whats new. (If its set up to do so). Other than that everyone's posts seem to be spot on the money

Surfing means when you are just viewing a site and downloading means when you save that site in the hard disc of your computer that is the former is a temporary storing and as soon as you disconnect the internet connection it vanishes immediately whereas the latter is a permanent storing in your computer until and unless you delete it yourself.

I'm not an expert and do not speak technical language. But from what I understand it, surfing the net simply means viewing web sites on the world wide web, which is to say, going from one to the other as if surfing waves, but then I may be wrong. This is what I've always understood it to mean. Downloading on the other hand means storing data, such as a file or document, on your hard drive.

I think, Surfing means just browsing from the internet using your browser like Internet explorer or firefox. It does some response to the server and the sever sent data to your computer which will be viewed by your browser. Downloading means your downloading a file in the web either using your browser or download manager. Well it sounds like they have the same function.

Well! there is a lot of difference between Downloading and surfing (Browsing). Surfing is searching for a particular information, or anything on the internet. Downloading is Saving content of our choice to the hard disk of our computer. Browsing data cannot get saved onto the hard-disk except some temp files that are necessary to operate or perform the search itself. To download we must have appropriate permission from the owner of the content that we are downloading.
