I'm really clueless about all this. How do I apply for FAFSA? Do I have to be admitted by a college/university first? Or do I apply for FAFSA first? Do you think I'm eligible? I'm working as a dialysis technician and that's my only source of income. I'm nobody's dependent. My dad is dead and my mom is receiving SS benefits but I'm not her dependent and she doesn't live with me. She's out of the country. I'm renting my own apartment with a roommate. I would like to go to college and finish a degree but how do I apply for a student grant?

You usually apply during the first of the year. Any time after January 1st of the new year. I believe you can apply later throughout the year, but the longer you wait the less aid you'll get. You will need income information from the year before, as financial aid is generally awarded due to financial need/income. You can go to fafsa.gov to learn more about it and get more detailed instructions. You apply for your fafsa (sometimes you need a parent's information as well, depending on your situation - again more info is on the website, not sure about your particular situation) and you can have the FAFSA results sent to any school you are considering or are going to. You don't have to apply to the school first. You can do either or first. But you want to make sure your FAFSA results get sent to the school, and then from there on - once your results get sent to the school, the FAFSA should offer you grants such as the Pell Grant if you qualify for them, and also federal Stafford loans (again, if you qualify for them). It seems confusing at first but why not just take a look around the website. If youknow where you are going to school, your financial aid office can help with making this all easier too.
