My next door neighbor gave her 7 yr old boy a cell phone for his birthday. I think that this is going a little over board, what does a small child have to do that is so important that he has to have a cell phone. I have 4 kids and there is no way that I would give a phone to a 7 yr old, my 12 yr old wants a phone and he can't have one until next year. So my question how old does your child have to be for them to have a cell phone.

Oh my gosh! 7 years old is far too young for a cell phone!!! My 9 year old half-sister is also talking about getting one soon. She's a little bit spoiled from my mom but I'm hoping my mom says NO! There is NO reason a kid that young needs a cell phone. Not to sound old, but back when I was 9, I think cell phones were just coming out or we might not have even had them! I got my first (pre-paid) cell phone when I was 15 and got my first job. I had to pay for it all myself... And I think that's the way it should be, you know? A cell phone is not a necessity. Especially not for a young kid.

My son does have a cellphone when he was 8yo. I give him a cellphone as our communications. But he can not allowed to bring at school (well school also prohibited the student to bring such kind of gadget). We don't have landline at home so i give him that in order for me to contact him when he is alredy at home.

I think that will not be good for a seven year old boy. On that age, a boy should explore, play and study. Cellphone is good for communication only but it will lead him to explore more on the outside world. I do not know if he have a classmate that has a cellphone too, that is why maybe he was influenced to have a cellphone and maybe he is the one who requested that cellphone to his parents. But to me it is not a good idea as it will not bring him good. I had my cellphone at 21 years of age. Mainly because i do not have the money to buy it and not because my parents do not want me to have it.

My suggestion to you is to never buy a cell phone unless its absolutely necessary. Cell phones have adverse effect on our health.More than 50% users of cell phones are for pass times with no valid reasons. It is perhaps one on the most misused gadget like the internet

I think when they are in their secondary school but still give them some limits when to use them. Me, I allow my daughter to use her cellphone only on some important occasions that I will have the need to text her often especially when I am on work or during weekends if she has no more assignments to do. We should teach them to be responsible enough to know their own limits but if not, it's better not to give them if they don't follow the rules properly.

I am unable to understand why she gave a cell phone to only a 7 year old boy. If i considered my self i will give them when they will pass out their high school exams and will enter in college.

I don’t have any child because I am not a married person. I want to tell you about me that when I get my cell phones. I was in my graduation when I had got my first cell phones. Then I feel very happy when I get cell phone in my hand. And now there is no value of cell phone because now everyone has a cell phone. A now in very cheep rates you can purchase a cell phone of your choice.

I gave my son a cellphone when he entered his 1st year in highschool already. I think that thats the right age when giving your child a cellphone.

Well for many parents its for their child's safety - so they can openly communicate with them even when away. The cell phone for birthday is the wrong approach though. Young children should receive cell phones like older ones receive house keys: as a responsibility. Perhaps give them phones without many features such that its main use is calling.
