I spent two weeks without black pepper for cooking because I dont want to break the budget I made. We went to the grocery two weeks ago and I had a goad to make those enough for two weeks, im finishing on friday and I cant believe I really did it. My husband loves spicy food and all the food I know have black pepper on the recipe. What I did is put red pepper powder instead on the food I cooked. It wasnt that bad except that its a little bit more spicy.
Which ingredient do you use almost everyday for cooking? Can you also have two weeks without black pepper?

I love black pepper and use it on almost everything I cook. I would not be very happy if I didn't have my black pepper. It isn't just for the heat that black pepper has but I like the taste as well.
But sometimes the price of black pepper can be nuts. I see in the regular grocery stores you can pay up to $7.99 for a little container of black pepper. Then I go to the dollar store and see they have the same container size of black pepper for one dollar. I couldn't believe it so I bought 10 of them. I have enough black pepper to last me at least 5 years. They are big containers.
I have watched since then for the price of black pepper in the grocery stores and it is still very expensive and it is about 2 years later. I don't know why it is so costly in a regular grocery store when it is still cheap in the dollar stores. I went and bought another 10 of them again at the dollar store so now I should have enough black pepper to last me 10 years. It doesn't go bad so no big deal.
Cheers and happy mylotting ,
Chris

I have a pepper mill at home and would use it anytime I'm cooking, but I'd have to say I'm not using it in any quantity that buying some if I felt I needed it would have a significant effect on my budget..That is,There's not much in my larder that I'd go without for 2 weeks if it ran out and I liked to use it on a regular basis! Herbs and spices seem to go a long way when used in cooking..they're good value..Congrats on sticking to Your budget,though..I know it can be tough sometimes!

I don't actually use black pepper to make the food i am cooking spicy. Too much black pepper gives the food a bitter taste. I use black pepper to add taste to a dish.
For me, if i want a food to be spicy , like if it is tomato based, i would drop some bits of hot sauce.
Or sometimes, i would put some slices of finger pepper, or chili pepper. Or i would use a drop of chili powder. It depends on what dish i am cooking actually. My husband and I like eating spicy foods that's why.

when my mom cook she always put seasoning, just to enhance the flavor of the food, with that maybe we can absolutely cook food without pepper.

Maybe. Black pepper is not spicey to me but, I love the smell (except for it makes me sneeze) and it enhances the taste of some of my favorite dishes. Meals wouldn't be the same without it but, I think I can make it.

But why? black peppers are just cheap, they won't break your budget dear, unless the amount you consume for a week is more than 100 grams . Buying ground black peppers in bigger pack will save you more rather than just buying it into smaller quantities.
The only consistent ingredient that I use everyday for cooking is salt. I can skip ground black peppers if I wanted to, there is no problem, but since I do maintain my food blog, it will be impossible for me to skip it since I do present it to my readers the ingredients I have used for my recipe .

Good for you if you could go without and not feel miserable in the process.
I could go two weeks without pepper but I could NOT go without sugar!!!

Hi pbbbsra,
I use black pepper in making onion pepper sambar/rasam. I use red chilly powder or replaced with green chillies. And salt is also common in the food which I cook. Actually I had guests in my house from last week, they don't use red chilly powder or green chilly. So I am not using them. I am tasting my dish as different new recipe, no problem that to tastes good.

We don't use black pepper in our meal. instead of using black pepper we use chilli paste and it is more spicy than black pepper. I use black pepper when I made egg sandwiches and for that purpose only unless we made some other western food. But it so rare. Mostly we just eat and cook the local food as my parents just eat the local one. We always use onion and garlic in our cook. We never missed these two ingredients along with the chilli paste!(^^)

I very rarely use black pepper - but if I had to last two weeks without chilli flakes or garlic, I would really struggle. I love spicy food, and hate bland food, so I use chilli and garlic in a lot of things - pasta, curries, stir fry, thai curries....I honestly don't think I'd be able to do it!
Well done, congratulations on sticking to your budget!

Hi, first let me congratulate u for managing ur budget and life without compromises are very bland. Its only the sweet moment that we recieve after the struggle is the most sweetest. And the most common ingrdient that i use everyday is salt. And i can manage without black pepper because most of the recipes that i follow dont have black pepper.
