Though I am a scientist

Friends, the scientists enjoy denigrating religionists comparing them to little children who believe in outrageous fairytales. But if we take a close look at what the scientists are asking us to blindly accept on faith from them, we will see that is unscientific dogma. They want us to accept that the universe came out of absolutely nothing, but there is not even one shred of scientific evidence to support that anything can came out nothing, what to speak of the entire cosmic manifestation coming out of nothing. They are not able to understand FULLY, the simplest of all atoms, that is ‘HYDROGEN’, that has just one electron and one proton, what to speak of the complex molecules. Faith in god is never fairy tale, if we believe in god, the supreme almighty in any form, there is no harm at all, rather we get some benefits, the most important one is ‘mental peace’. What is your view on this, do you believe in existence of some super power? Please share your experience on this topic and comment. Thanks in advance. Professor ‘Bhuwan’. . Cheers have a lucky day ahead.

Hello my friend. It is difficult for me to get a concept of on all-powerful being over others. As a Zen practitioner, I tend to feel that All is energy and that All is of equal power and merit. To me, it is a universal intelligence that permeates everything that is manifest and yet to become manifest. The word infinite is a good desription, because it is beyong the ability of the human mind to describe that which never had a beginning and that which never will end. This to me, is God, but I hesitate to use the word because of its association with a being that is over all others. To me it is more like of others. Even if we are crazy enough to destroy our own world, this energy will continue. I think it was science itself, that claimed that energy can never be destroyed, it can only be transformed into something else. In Zen there is what is referred to as no-thing. This is not the same as nothing, but more like the unmanifest. The still central place of pure creation. A complete paradox where no-thing is every-thing. I believe the Buddhist word is shunyata. Much science today, wants to explain away things in terms of the physical, and I don''t think this is possible. There is more, but to me it has to be experienced directly more than conceptualized. Each of us is on our own path, and the only road-map we have is what has been left to us by the great masters who have lived in the physical world before us. There are different maps I believe, all leading to the one place. _Derek

Hello again my friend.. I am very sorry to hear of the suffering of you and your wife.. Perhaps I haven't explained properly, but the type of therapy I was practising was psychotherapy, where people would come to me on a one-to-one basis or sometimes in a group to deal with issues that concerned them in their life of a psychological nature. Most of the problems I helped with were like phobias and stress-related problems. Through the groups or consultations my clients would first of all learn how to focus into the roots or the problems and by subjecting them to awareness would then begin to resolve them. Some were more difficult to resolve than others as the karmic links seemed to go very deep into their conditioning. I have always been a Zen practitioner, but Zen is not therapy, or a religionn as such, but a path or way that is more like a learning process -learning how to deal with our karma, some of which goes very deep. I added the Zen principle of acceptance and focus to my therapy work and found it very effective. In my Zen, I follow what the Buddha said. He said that life is suffering and that the origin of suffering is desire, but that suffering can stop when we become detached - or have no desire. In zazen (meditation of just sitting, following the breath and accepting and witnessing our experience), I have felt pain and suffering at times of sickness etc. But focusing and witnessing in zazen these experiences, I have transcend my discomfort many times. I have found that as I get older, my body is wearing and there is more pain these days. It is natural for me to want comfort from pain, and I learn to accept and witness it, therefore, I get an inner knowledge (that is the best way I can explain) that this is where I am in my development right now, and it itself this comforts me. When it comes to healing others, I do not have any special powers or anything similar. All I do when asked is to bring a suffering person to mind in meditation and focus on a resolution for them. Sometimes I have heard remarkable coincidental stories of how they have improved, but at other times, nothing happens. I do not try to understand, as basically I don't believe our finite mind can understand what happens. I think we each have an answer in our minds, and if we practice looking within ourselves and just witnessing what our mind and body is communicating, the experiential answers that come to us, can be of great support. Zen deals with the moment of now. All past and future cannot exist now, so it regarded as an illusion. Zazen helps me to keep my mind focused on the moment. Whether there is comfort of pain, I focus on it and realize that whatever I an experiencing cannot last as everything on earth is relative and has a beginning and an end cycle. And there are cycles withing cycles and nothing exists in our world without this cycle, whether it be a cycle of a billion years or a few days, hours, minutes or seconds. Regarding my physical health, I study how I feel with regard to what I am eating in my diet. I quit all sugar produce many years ago, as I discovered my system wasn't metabolising it very well and I was always in pain. That worked to a degree. However, I also have athritis at the site of injuries I've had during my life, so I am learning to accept that now. I realize that old age and infirmity is not a pleasant thought, but to me, it may be inevitable, I don't know, but my Zen helps me to focus on the here and now. I hope you are feeling better soon my friend, and what I have written here is of some assistance to you and your wife. _Derek

Being born and raised as a hard core Christian, it is easy to say that I have had no trouble believing in the existence of God. Personally, I am grateful because I cannot imagine otherwise. Over the years, i have been reliant on my faith and His capacity to help and guide me during my not-so-good days. I admit there are moments that I had my "cold" moments when it comes to my relationship with HIm. But generally, I can say that I have always been reverent to Him.

After being pushed around by parents, teachers, priests and nuns to believe what they believe it is not easy to independently think on this subject. One chooses a path that has the least complication and that is exactly me and several others would opt for. Believing in the Almighty is what has been imbibed in the system and I continue to follow that.

i always believe in a supreme being. call it god, if you will. however, i don't perceive this "god" as what the religions do. i shun religious fanatics who attribute even the slightest things to their god, or those who take every scripture out of context. but don't get me wrong. i respect those people who knows what they believe in. people who are conscious of their faith and do not simply follow what their minister tells them. faith is not as simple as religions claim it to be.

I am also a scientific person. I rely and believe in science and acquiring knowledge. This one is a very sensitive topic to discuss as it really entails a lot of influences and people's belief. Even though that I am a science enthusiast and hardcore practitioner of such discipline, I do believe in a Supreme Being. Science cannot answer everything so what's left that science cannot explain is I think would be on that faith side of things. I believe that there other essential things other than what science can offer and with that I believe in the Supreme Being. Life is just what you believe in so there is nothing wrong in believing both science and faith.

Well, religion, to me, is a lot like Mythology. In fact, it's a modern form of Mythology. Everyone thinks that what they believe in is real and true, but it might not be. I mean think about it. Why do we have so many different religions? Why do people believe in different ideas and deities? What do we really gain from believing in these religious beliefs? Could there be a higher power out there? Maybe, but the thing is there is no proof of a higher power out there. I wouldn't call religious beliefs "fairy tales" because that undermines what religions are, but would I call them modern mythologies? Yes. Oh, and there is a difference between "fairy tales" and mythology. "Fairy tales" don't often become religions, mythologies do.

Hi Professor. I believe there's a supreme being who is guiding us in everything. I also believe in the scientific explanations of things. I think I believe in the Big Bang Theory of how the universe came into. I just haven't heard that scientists are saying that the universe came out of nothing. But if there are scientists who say that, I don't think I would believe that. There would always be something, not just visible to the naked eye. Cheers.

dear professor, as years add up to one's age, there gets to be more questions to what we already know. people could invent things, make it useful for others, but there is always another question that would prop up and then in the end, we question ourselves, "am i happy that i could not make the questions end"? of course there are solutions to it.. as always. but your mind will work like machines, insensitive to the feel. then you wonder. that is when you feel there is still some super being that science will not be able to explain. i pity those who sarcastically say things against belief and faith because they know a "great deal". someday, they too will age and hope they will find in their heart the peace in believing and having faith. i am impressed with people who says i know science but i do believe in a supreme being. thank you as always. have a great day. ann

In truth is it any less a fairy tale to believe that in the great expanse of nothing a hiccup happened and the universe was born? For me, I then wonder what caused the hiccup and, imagine that, I'm back to God again..Yes, I believe. I also accept what science has told me in what they have learned of creation. But a lot of scientific opinion, for me, is like a chessman defining the nature of the chessboard based solely on the square the opinion finds itself on. But the true nature of that chessboard can't be completely understood unless one stands outside of it and can see it complete. As we are a part of the design and not outside of it we will never know the 'completeness' of it...Enjoy!

Though it is true that our faith in some higher being is greatly influenced by the kind of culture we grew up from, still, I stand by my faith in my God, and that I do believe in this kind of omnipotent existence. From a personal experience, I do feel that belief in a matter which is physically non-existent may bring up some questions, still, it is my faith that keeps this knowledge of His power strong.

I wanted to belive the super power because there are indeed a lot of things and questions which scientists could not answer. but my reasonable senses told me it is not right to put all these to the super power. we should realize some of questions had been asked by the ancient people were resoveled. It is possible in the future, perhaps a very long future, the questions presented here would be also well answered.

Your representation of yourself as a scientist is questionable at best. If your understanding of science is so profoundly flawed that you think that science asks that anything be accepted without supporting evidence. The Big Bang Theory is a good case in point. The theory does not state that something came from nothing. The Big Bank is postulated as a moment when there was an extremely rapid conversion of energy to matter. It is stated as a theory and then supported with the best available evidence for our consideration. For an understanding of the Hydrogen Atom we need to turn to Niels Bohr's Copenhagen interpretation and later work done by Paul Dirac and John von Neumann. Their model is still incomplete but it does give us a far better understanding of the nature of reality than Theology can ever hope to provide.

I believe as the scientists do. I am an agnostic and wonder why it is that so many books were not chosen for the Bilble yet the ones that were are supposed to be the word. If they are why weren't these others? It is all so unexplainable to me. Makes no sense. And to base a faith on this sort of thing just seems silly to me.

In view of Science, energy can be not be created and destroyed. One form of energy can be only be converted to another energy. By saying so, our human body has some energy which makes it to run, after some ages the energy slowly converted to another energy and we die. The reverse action takes place during our birth. I am thinking the converted life energy as super power, or something that control the conversion may be super power. thanks.. Kannan

I don't believe in existence of any super power .When i was a kid ,i was afraid of ghosts .Even though my parents and my sisters told me that there didn't exist such things as ghosts ,i just couldn't control my scare to the black shadows .As i grow up ,i gradually realize that my parents are right about ghosts .And i am never frightened by the thought of ghosts .Instead ,i know that bad men are really threat to me .So i take more care when walking alone at night .Besides ghosts ,i use to looking forward to the largess from the God ,i mean ,Chinese god . But i waited and waited ,nothing happened . So i decide to count on myself and fight for my happiness . That is the change of my mind .
