my baby likes chocolates but she is not crazy about chocolates. i mean she will take her share or her squares and then will not ask for any more even if you also want to share. but most of the time i have seen that when ever she eats chocolate she ends up coughing. i consulted with my doctor and she says that cream biscuits give coughing to some kids and children, may be to the elderly too but chocolates are not that a thing that it gives coughing. i feel she is allergic to something that is in a chocolate. when she ate two squares of dark, semi dark chocolate, that went good. but not the others and my in laws do not like dark chocolates at all. neither they eat nor they want it to be served to the child. what is your opinion?

Chocolate contains poisonous substances as well as brain altering chemicals. For example, a large bar of chocolate can kill a small dog. You should never give chocolate to any pets.
Chocolate is also known as being a "love enhancer" which is why the habit of giving chocolates to your wife is so common.
So, giving chocolate to young children, and especially babies, might be quite dangerous. It is well known that most children don't like dark chocolate, preferring milk chocolate instead. Whereas most older adults slowly develop a taste for the darker types. There must be a logical reason for this trend.
Like many other items, the exact ingredients of chocolate are not known. There could be many substances that effect your baby. It is best to avoid chocolate all together since there is obviously a problem.

I also learned that chocolates are toxic for dogs because of Theobromine a component of chocolate which is a Cardiovascular and Central Nervous Stimulant can ,which can slightly increase blood pressure, and cause nausea and vomiting.Though it has toxic effects on dogs,it is generally safe for human consumption because humans cab break down and excrete Theobromine.
I think your child's cough is not cause by eating chocolates in particular.Maybe it is generally cause by too much consumption of sweets.Too much sweets can irritate our throat, and may cause cough. It is important for us to drink plenty of water after consuming a lot of sweets.

How old is your child? I have always heard that you should not give chocolate to an infant, certainly not one under a year old. A taste now and then is ok, but most pediatricians I know recommend waiting until a child is 2-3 to introduce chocolate bars or candy.
Regardless, if your child doesn't care for chocolate, why give it to her? There is no real benefit to giving chocolate to a very young child, and the health risks can be severe. With all due respect to your doctor, any food can trigger an allergy--many people are allergic to chocolate, and many are specifically allergic to or can't tolerate milk chocolate because of the dairy in it. Maybe you should seek a second medical opinion?

You said she had no problem with the dark or semidark chocolate; so, it is very unlikely that she is allergic to the chocolate itself. If she was allergic to the chocolate itself, dark chocolate would affect her the most because it has the highest concentration of chocolate/cocoa in it.
There are other ingrediants that get added to chocolates - the next step would be to give her a square of two of just plain milk chocolate and see if that gives her a problem. If it does, then compare the ingrediant listing to the listing for semidark and dark choclate ans see what is different. Also, remember that "artificial flavors" can contain any number or variety of ingrediants and the problem could be that one company's "artificial flavors" is formulated differently from another company's.
If plain chocolate does not give her a problem; then, it may be other things that get added to choclate and you would need to check ingrediant lists when you find out exactly which chocolates are giving her trouble.

Maybe the ingredients that had been added to the chocolates made her cough. It could also be the sugar added in it or ones the chocolate melted in to her mouth it causes irritation to her throat. There are many things to consider as you have said dark or semi-dark ones doesn't irritates her throat and I guess it contains no sugar.Thank for sharing my friend.

I think what you feel is right, too much chocolate to children may cause allergy that would lead them to coughing and if that will always occur it will develop to asthma already. I am allergic to chocolates also and I am not allowed to eat one but I do eat sometimes but only dark chocolates since I can't resist it. Regarding dark chocolates, it has more health benefits than any other chocolates. It is good for our body, it gives us protection from heart diseases, blood pressure and it has many nutrients and vitamins too. So encourage your in laws to eat dark chocolates and not the ordinary milk or white chocolates.
