So my husband has become a truck driver. I really do not think our children know what to think. My stepsons mother doesnt care about him and now that daddy is gone when he talks to him on the phone he talks in a quite voice as if he's about to cry. I have told my stepson that daddy is not leaving you. We just need the money and daddy is doing this for all of us. I still dont think he fully understands and if he does I think he's just scared that he will leave. My oldest daughter whos 7 1/2 took it the hardest the night we dropped him off at the bus station. She bawled her eyes out for 3 hours non stop. I feel like there's nothing I can do to make them feel better but I know what we are doing as parents is in the best interest of them. I too had a truck driving daddy. It is hard to have a parent gone for a week at a time and home just 1 short day but we really had no other option. We live in Connecticut and he had to take a bus all the way to Missouri. He left last Friday and will be gone until roughly August 19th. It's rough with him being that far away because the kids are not used to it. My oldest daughter is giving more attitude and thinking she can get away with everything. I just hope this gets easier. Anybody else has a parent that drives the 18 wheelers for a living? If so what is some advice on staying sane?

Children are naive.their life revolves around their parents all day, they don't know how hard making a living is.However we must understand their feelings. They like to be together from morning to night with their parents and hate to part with their parents.

I wish that I had spent the time and money to get a HGV1 license (Heavy goods vehicle Class 1 for 18 wheelers as Americans say) when I was younger. There have been so many times when no work was available but driving jobs were always there. Just a piece of paper and the occasional medical exam are all that is needed to ensure some kind of job in desperate times.
Being away from home isn't so bad! Could be worse, like being in the marines!
