person.Needless to say that my husband was shocked when he was told.My son is 9 years old and has worn glasses for at least 4 years and has also has squint ops on both of his eyes.I have asked to have him seen by the dr that done the op, more of a second opinion, as i am not being funny, but i trust his opinion more.Rang and spoke to the middle school where my some will be starting in a few months and the senco teacher said that it also go hand in hand with dyspraxia, which he also has, really that should have confirmed what the eye bloke said to do with his vision, but still i want a second opinion for peace of mind for all of us.With my son being diagnosed with dyspraxia ment that is why we had not and why my son had not noticed.

I don't blame you for wanting a second opinion and it would be strange if he has been blind in that one eye since he has been wearing glasses and them just figuring it out now. I never heard of dyspraxia before so I had to look it up. I do see why you wouldn't know if he is blind in that one eye. If he is blind in that one eye I wonder if he really has dyspraxia and has those symptoms of that because of not seeing if it ends up that he is about blind in the left eye.

My son was under the hospital for three years after the eye op, so i am sure that they would have picked it up at some point, as they were sorting the right strenth of lenses out for him in those years and it was before then that peadiactrics discovered he had dyspraxia.I never mentioned to the man that just told us that he was virtually blind, that he had dyspraxia, but after being told about his left eye my husband mentioned it, just incase he had got it wrong due to that fact.I am worried about his future, as he wants to drive a car like his dad and his sister. All my children had their regular eye check up done in December and he was the one that was recalled just 6 months later. My dr arranged a appointment so i could get my son a second opinion and he told me that he can not see the man getting it wrong, as they are really qualified, but as i wanted the second opinion i could have one.

I would be like you and want a second opinion no matter what. I know,it would be upsetting because of thinking that he will be depressed if he doesn't get to do things that his siblings get to do.

Thank you for the best response. Hopefully you got some good answers figured out about what is wrong with your sons vision by now. Your story about that your son would be sad if he couldn't drive when he got older because of his vision. My nephew tried to get his license after he graduated from highschool and they told him he couldn't because of his vision. He has had vision problems all of his life but he can see.He graduated from highschool maybe 2 years ago. He is handling it good now since he knows that it has to be a part of his life.

Hello my friend jugsjugs Ji, So nice of you for your immediate and prompt positive comments. I would only urge not to lerave hope, if one Dr. and hospital fail, there are many others to take care. But only your approach should never be biased. Let's hope for the best. Thanks. May God bless You and have a great time.

I am living in hope that the hospital do not tell me that they can not do anything to help him, as he is really young and it will effect him for the rest of his life. Also hope that they do not find problems with the right eye.

hi jugsjugs that would indeed be a shocker to be told a nine year old is virtually blind in one eye.oh yes by all means do get a second opinion.I got the news that I had a cataract and some macular degeneration by by this ophthalmologist who is maybe 90 and while I am sure hes a good doctor I also want a second opinion too. If I can get a lot more sight back in my left eye by getting that cataract removed why not?As your son has his whole life ahead of him a second opinion would maybe give him a new chance for better eye sight now.

I am like you Hatley, i look for the things that can be done, rather than leaving things and then it is way too late.I think that i am well within my rights as well as my sons rights to ask for a second opinion. The eye man that my son saw said that he had gradually lots his sight and that is why it has not caused him a worry for him to notice. We then mentioned after being told that my son had dyspraxia and perhaps that is what he was seeing,{not like we were trying to tell the bloke his job or anything}, he said he was still virtually blind and if anything was to happen to his right eye, well he would be blind in both.I shall let you know at the End of August, as that is when he gets the second opinion from the hospital eye people.

Hello. I can totally understand where everyone is coming from in this discusion. Although I have been blind for 20 years, in the begenning it was quite diffcult to process that I wasn't going to be able to "Hang with the big guys." I completly agree with everyone in say that a second, third, even fourth opinion would do some good. If god forbid things don't go as planned, I would be more than happy to help you and your son through this process.

Hello there! Haven't heard from you in awhile. With the dyspraxia I can see where the other wasn't realized right away. I hope you get it all figured out for his new school year. My grandson will be nine in October and I know how important it is to have eveyone on board.

Even if his vision is severely impaired in that eye, there is a type of lens that is like a binocular, kind of, and here, stateside, people with severe vision impairment can drive with those special lenses. I am not sure, they may be called monocular lens.

Well, two of my favorites ladies. I am sorry Jugs that you have been ill. It is heart warming to see you back. Take it easy! I am glad to know Gerty that there is this lens. That is great! They have certainly come a long way haven't they?

Hi, i have not been very well, or more to the point the morphine and pills were making me feel ill and still with pain. The school where he is starting is great as i have spoken to special needs teacher and she is really good at that school and has also seen my sons old school records, knowing that my son has been diagnosed with dyspraxia. He is seeing hospital eye clinic at the end of August, so i will know more then about how to help my son more and if there is anything else that they can do.I feel so helpless and sorry for him, as i know he has enough problems now with the dyspraxia.

Oh yes jugsjugs it is important and imperative that anything to do with surgery especially of the eyes that we do get a second opinion. Many as my grandmother experienced in her earlier years, after surgery that most times errors are irreversible. She lost her entire eye after eye surgery. So you are doing the right thing here in seeking a second opinion.

I'm sorry about that. Yeah, definitely get a second opinion, and also see if they might possibly be able to correct the problem, if possible. I know that if and when I ever get the money, I certainly want my teeth and my eyes fixed. Since I have Astigmatism, I know that things will only get worse for eyes, so if I could get corrective surgery for it, I will.

Oh My Goodness you have been through so darn much. Because the eyes are so important and something that will affect your son for his entire life I would not be shy to ask for a second or even a third opinion as I felt it to be needed. No doctor is perfect and getting all the medical knowledge you possibly can is never a bad thing. Good luck and know you and your family are in my prayers. Take Care

That's something bad. I believe u should seek a 2nd opinion and even more if u wanna feel more secure. Besides your kid is still young and had only been wearing glasses for 5yrs, that should not cause him to be virtually blind in his left eye even he's gone through squint ops on his eyes. If he's virtually blind caused by the op, then it's the doctor who din do it properly causing the complications now

A second opinion isn't bad but, I would highly recommend going to another hospital or doctors office as doctors working together will often stick together in their ideas.

So sad hearing about your son, he is just a young boy and does not enjoy life very well yet. I hope he would be able to cope with the disability. Some blind people could manage to cope by using their other senses. He only needs all the support you could give as his parents to go trough it all. I pray that God will help him in coping and that no other illness will affect him.

So sorry to hear about your son's left eye.I do hope that their still a chance for that eye to see.Have you consulted a specialist on that kind of blindness? Yeah, I guess you should seek second opinion just in case. Thanks for sharing my friend.

How can that happen? He's only 9 yet he's virtually blind in his left eye? He's way too young for that to happen since none of u had that condition and i believe he doesn't have the ability to damage his own eye at that young age. Have u tried seeking a third or four opinion? It's best to seek as many opinions as possible, because some doctors are out to make money over some small issues.

Dyspraxia is a new word for me, so I will look it up.Some of the words in medical for things are different than here in the US. I am guessing an ophthalmic is the same as an opthamologist here. It is always good to get a second opinion for anything.
