Weeee! What do you know? There are caterpillars in my kitchen, and I am not just amused, I am really even receiving a good education. My daughter is working on a thesis that involves the metamorphosis of butterflies and the possible effect of hydrogen sulfate on the growth of butterflies. My daughter is on the initial experiment and where else can she observe the development of these lovely creatures but inside my home. So, there is that tiny cage enclosed by a net near my kitchen window, and I am loving it.

caterpillar - The caterpillars at home look like this.

And the plant pretty much look like guava.
Weee! Cool! We have caterpillars at home too, back home in Zamboanga. They are the big ones, thick, green and squishy. They like being on guava trees. My mom and I tried to transfer them to other trees because the guava trees are her plants and she really cares for them. One of the guava trees have no more leaves left (guava trees doesn't grow so big) and that's another reason we transferred the caterpillar. They don't like mango leaves or grass, or the others. We figured maybe there are different food preference for every type of caterpillar, since I've seen some other caterpillar being on other plants as well. My mom, being with the guava trees so much, tore of a piece of leave and made me smell it. It's so much more fragrant, I guess that's why the caterpillars like them. And probably softer than mango leaves. lol! We have seen some form cocoons, but never fly out as butterflies. We're wondering if it was our fault because we stressed them out from moving them to different places, or if we just haven't caught the transformation.

Wee thanks for the best response! Do ask you daughter if it's normal for caterpillar to cocoon right after being moved. lol. Just to ease my conscience.

Phew! I thought when I first read the title that you had an infestation. I guess it is not so bad if they are enclosed in a cage. I find it interesting the kinds of things that people will research and how they will go about doing it. What level of education is your daughter? I hope that she does well with her thesis. Have a great week!!!

The butterfly eggs are the most exciting specimens my daughter had brought home. There were some that were pretty gross! My daughter is in fourth year, Biology. I am also praying that her thesis works, the whole family is already well involved into it!

How interesting! Take this as a learning experience and know that they won't be there forever. It is great that you are willing to allow her to have them in the house to further her education. As a home school family, there are many times where we are doing many science projects in our home.

I am now beginning to think that turning my garden into a butterfly farm might be a good project.

Caterpillars sometimes fly in our house. It's interesting. All people are very fun with this. We often discuss about their shape and color. But we have never studied them for a thesis

I had taken caterpillars for granted, when once long ago, I was very much aware that these creatures are the hope for the flowers. Now I learned that the lowly weed that grows by the pavement, the one I pull out and throw, is actually the food of the caterpillars.

I've never seen the whole metamorphosis process of butterflies. I believe it's going to be amazing, especially when they break out of the cocoons, becoming a beautiful butterfly. I can't imagine the beautiful and amazing sight of it happening. Caterpillars might be a little disgusting to look at, but they are actually cute, and they are harmless.

My daughter named the biggest one Jaba. And Jaba eats four leaves in a minute.

wow, that is so interesting for a thesis , my friend. Though i must say, i am afraid of worms and caterpillar is one of them. But their metamorphosis is indeed so interesting until they become those beautiful butterflies. I love butterflies and i love having their pictures as my wallpaper and cursors. I know you daughter will have a fabulous thesis, because the subject is also fabulous , my friend!

I love butterflies and tend to forget that they come from catterpillars. I would not want catterpillars in my home, even if they are enclosed I still don't know how I would feel about it as bugs make me naseous.
