philipines is rich in natural resources but filipinos are poor. why? yes we are rich in natural resources but some of our resources are not managed well due to corrupt leaders. other reasons why we become poorer and poorer because of little work opportunities, overpopulation, lack of education and of course selfishness( some rich people are greedy for power and wealth and they tend to oppress poor people instead of helping them to prosper.)

Very well said bipolarbear! I do agree with you. We have the spratlys and Surigao Del Sur as rich in oil but why do we suffer to have high price oil? I don't understand this country. Leaders except those who are true to their oath are competing whoever gets the best position to control the country. I can't say more except God bless to us. Thanks!

Bipoloarbear, I do agree with you that there are a lot of corrupt leaders. But I beg to disagree that there are little work opportunities in our country. There is a lot of work opportunities we are just not fitted to that particular work which was probably caused by our education system which aims to train filipinos to work abroad and not to train to create more jobs in the philippines.

Corrupt officials, system that slows that the progress of the country and lack of facilities to promote and explore more of our resources. I am not surprised about this anymore since we have been sitting for so long and doing nothing or should I say there was someone doing it already and is the only one who gains.
If the case was just like this, then people would not be force to leave their country and work. Since there is no manpower needed and we lack local companies to generate jobs, most of us needs to go outside and work.
If we do have the resources, do we have the knowledge and machines to work for that resources?

Hi strawberrychocodahi! I guess we lack proper designation of authority from the government or if there is, the authorized person is not at all working his job. Or probably he is just doing it for his own benefits and not for the country and it's people. Our country has a lot of knowledgeable people who might be very helpful to improve our economy but they don't have the authority hence they seek better options to leave the country.

Hi diogz! Our government said that there are thousands of jobs in the country but where are they? We can not locate them. And if we ever apply for it, we aren't fitted for the job. They said the problem of unemployment here is mismatched. We produced a lot of people in graduate schools yet all the country need is some skilled workers. Maybe we need to only have the TESDA vocational courses as these are the in demand jobs even in the foreign land.

Strawberrychocodahi, as for the knowledge and machines to work for our natural resources... we have more than enough we produce some of the best engineers of all time and a lot of them too. But where are they now? They are there abroad working for foreigners. The problem I see is that Filipinos tend to look for greener pastures abroad and not within the country. There are a few local companies to generate job since we were taught in school that the only way to succeed is that to become employed by getting a job. Our education system should be improve and must include how to put up businesses that generate jobs. Filipino's I do observe are afraid of setting up businesses since they were not trained to do so. If only it could have been included in our education system it could have been better.

Hi meticulo!
That's because we don't know how to properly use our resources! We continuously use our resources without thinking of the future generations. The government is always promoting the sustainable use of our resources but many are still exploiting it without much concern to its conservation and protection.
And unfortunately, those who benefit from these are mostly the rich and those suffering are those needy. The rich has the capacity to fully utilize our resources whereas the needy lacks this capacity. So only a few gets richer and richer and many gets poorer and poorer.

I think it's because our natural resources are not managed effectively. Those who are supposed to manage them squander these resources instead and only use them for their personal gains, not for distribution to everyone. In the end, the rich become richer and the poor become poorer.

Why is it that people always says "the rich become richer and poor become poorer"? This statement seems to be overused and gone out of style! If you will notice the line of thinking of rich men as compared to the line of thinking of poor men you will notice that rich men look for ways to increase their wealth while poor look for ways to increase their desires. As for the natural resources being squandered for personal gains could have been true on some cases but most of our resources are not yet fully tapped due to insufficient interest of our fellow countrymen to invest on infrastructures to harness this resources. We have the knowledge and know how but we don't have the infrastructure and the monetary funds to harness this resources.

We are still poor because only those corrupt politician being benefited to those riches of our country...
When a business man or investors reach the exploration the politician first get the deal and make money to them...instead the money going the government it will only go to the pocket of those politicians

I come from one of the riches state in Malaysia. The state produced many millionaires during the timber boom in the 70s. We were really rich in these natural resources. But due to mismanagement of the forest coupled with greedy politicians, the timbers were indiscriminately felled for quick bucks. Round logs were exported to foreign countries to be processed and in return the country import those processed logs at higher prices. The government should have processed these logs locally and earned much more. Over the years of felling logs, the forest are almost barren and we have lost this natural resources for good. We have no more logs to export or for downstream processing thus no revenue for the country. Due to the mistakes of the past governments we have now become the poorest state in Malaysia. I think the same thing happen in your country when the country is infested by greediness of people in power.

Yup I do feel your sentiments. The Philippines was once on the verge of the development and improvement however due to corrupt individuals in the government it was slowly transformed into what it is now. We have been left by our neighboring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia and Hongkong in terms of economic growth. Luckily now, Our president is very vigilant to stop corruption as according to him It is his personal advocacy to stop corruption. I am currently awaiting and observing on the sidelines on what would be the effect of his campaign against corruption.

Yes adhyz! It's a sad reality. Even though we know how to conserve and develop our natural resources but we aren't allowed to touch them, only the powerful people can. We study to learn but we can not apply what we learn because we do not have the authority and right to utilize it. The poor is left to suffer while the rich becomes even richer.

Because other countries are using our natural resources since we don't have the money to use them and harness them into something useful.. And also, we are the ones filling our country with buildings and factories and cutting down and destroying our natural resources.

How come? because we don't invest on how to harness this natural resources! We the filipino people fails to promote and use our own products. We always want things such as states side or items made from abroad. We don't buy products made in the philippines. The government is corrupt. Filipino's tend to pull down other Filipinos. and there is a lot more reasons.

Yes, I always here about this. Maybe those natural resources have potential to help our country but we dont know how to tapped those resources for our benefit. Sometimes the foreigners are the one who are more aggressive to invest in our natural resources. Also maybe, our resources are ill-managed. As I see the owners of vast lands became very rich while the farmers who work on it remains poor. The rich are the usual who benefit from it.

Most of us Filipinos don't really have the thrive to invest our money into such cause because we don't have the idea how to? We don't have a culture of investing our savings into a more beneficial way. We instead invest our hard earned money on something such as gadgets and stuffs that depreciate in value over time. Just imagine this if there is almost 1 billion of Filipinos out there and would just invest at least 1 peso per individual into such cause to develop our natural resource that would have been 1 billion pesos and this could mean a lot of capital and could have more gains if properly managed by the right people. However right people is very hard to find.
