Economic or political crisis?

Can someone tell me more about the US debt issue that is currently affecting the global economies. From what I gather, it seems that it could be more than the US Treasury not having enough in its coffers but also a political issue.
Do you think a greater good can be achieved in time to avoid another global meltdown?
