Mine is barely hanging in there. I have peppers, cucumbers, potatoes and tomatoes. I hope that the heat spell will end and we will have a good fall growing season. I especially hope my heirloom tomato produces more. I loved the fruit from it. I am also growing some herbs.

I haven't got a vegetable garden this year..but I have been fighting a rose bush like crazy..lol. I love roses and am not the experienced gardener by any means..but I have so wanted some rose bushes. I bought one with white roses that have a splash of pink..they are beautiful. Well...when they are blooming they are beautiful..lol. It has a few blooms now but not what I would like for it too though. I don't seem to have any trouble with a cactus or ornamental grass though

The few roses I have are the old fashioned kind that only bloom once a year. That time is long passed. Growing things of whatever type is such a good hobby. I am not as good with cactus as I used to be.

the tomatoes are doing ok and i had a good crop of peas, but all the fruit bushes this year have been dismal. especially after i had such a good year last year. I havent had any raspberries, redcurrants or blueberries. so disappointing. But i have pots of herbs- marjoram, hyssop, mint sage, etc., and they look lovely and smell gorgeous!

I had lovely cherries, but the birds got to them and the grapes before I did. Apples and pears suffered from the dryness and the heat. My herbs did well too.

Our garden is holding its own but you're right, the heat doesn't help. And watering the garden is frowned upon. Go figure. We had a great crop of apricots, but after the first harvest . . . nothing. Pomegranates are still small, we have hope and then we had garlic, string beans, lemons (always), mint, potatoes (small crop) and persimmons. Not too shabby. Hope your tomatoes grow!

We have had really good luck with hot peppers this year. I am going to try some experiments toward having fall crops and will report in a discussion later if it works.

Unfortunately I did not get one started this year. The prime planting time was when I was having a lot of panic issues and I wasn't capable of doing much at that time. I really wish I had now, as it would be nice about now, we would be getting lots of tomatoes and peppers. Last year I had more tomatoes then I knew what to do with and all kinds of peppers. The zucchini flopped however, I managed to get one small zucchini, but I have only had success with zucchini one year.

You may be able to get a fall crop going, if you want to. Zucchini do better if you wait a little later than the other stuff to plant them.

Flower in my garden - Yellow Bell Under the Rain
I would love to see you vegetable garden! I can't have one like that because the soil in my area is not conducive to veggies. Nevertheless I do have fruit trees and flower garden in my home and now the plants are rejoicing because the rain keeps pouring and nourishing them. I just pray the rainwater will be just enough and not too much to destroy them though.

Hi GG, Well, I don't have a garden unfortunately, living in an apartment. But, my son-in-law has one in their backyard and he told me the other day, it's just not doing as well as he expected this year. He said they have alot of tomatoes but they just won't ripen, and the rest of the garden, peppers, eggplant, squash, etc. have very few on them. I think it's from too much rain over the summer this year. I remember a few years back when that happened and everyone was complaining that their gardens are in bad shape. We've had tons of rain and flooding here. Hope yours gets better, I just luv, luv, luv, fresh vegies from the garden. I always had one in my backyard until I had to move to an apartment. No fun.

Peppers are one thing that like hot and dry. I am picking the tomatoes before they are bright red and putting them on the counter. They do not get a pretty color outside, but inside they are yummy. I hope his garden turns around soon.

You know, I forgot to even tell him that. That's a great idea and I'll have to run it by him, to bring them inside and leave them on the counter. That's what I do sometimes when I buy the fresh one's at the store and they're still a bit green. I don't put them in the refrigerator until they ripen. Thanks! I did mention to him to make some fried green tomatoes and he was happy with that idea. He said they did that last year and they were delicious, but forgot about it. Not the best healthy low-fat food but once in a while doesn't hurt.

It's very hot and I have not spent as much time as I should on it. My tomatoes are cropping regardless however, the peppers and aubergines are coming along well, and I have most of the potatoes out already. I have already cleared most of the beds as the peas and beans are through now, and I've replanted with a second crop which I'm hoping I can just squeeze in before the season cools. I wish I had planted more salads, but I have more strawberries than i've ever seen before :-)

I ought to be doing allot better! The farm is how we feed ourselves, so I'm pretty disappointed at our performance this year really. I was away during the early part of the year when we do our ground prep, so when I got back we were already behind. Then we had other priorities in the early summer too as we were running a course here. Then we've had allot of guests and volunteers here this summer who have been eating what I'm harvesting so there will be little to preserve.

Our garden is not doing so well. This is our first year with a vegetable garden and we have been fighting so many damn pests. and they are killing the plants left an right... Huge squash plants.. and something has eaten the base and killed it before it could produce only a couple of cucumbers and then the plant starts dying. Fighting cabbage beetles, grubs etc. is not fun and the heat is not all too great either. But we have more salad (lettuces) than we can eat. Lots of tomatoes on the vines but many are being eaten by worms.. yuck! So much time invested and so little yield.. :(

Some types of soaps will repel insects when sprayed on plants. I have grass hoppers badly now. There is a natural bacteria that you can get to put on plants that get worm type pests, I think that includes grubs. Right now the name escapes me, but it is called BT for short. You can get it at nurseries. It "eats" the worms and grubs from the inside when they have eaten plants that have been sprayed. It is only harmful to worms. Now I remember Bacillus Thuringiensis.

If there is corn nearby usually worms will leave tomatoes alone, but we have grasshoppers and ants that like to eat our tomatoes. It sounds like you have some squash borers. Not sure what to do about that. You will learn what can go where and how to control the pests soon. Sometimes it is a matter of missing their lifecycle, by planting earlier or later.

We have 5 rows of veggies, lettuces in first, tomatoes in 2nd row. herbs, then corn, squash, beans in 4th and cabbage on the last row. And boy have we been plagued with pests.. start with grubs.. we went out and got nematodes. then we has some moldy looking stuff attacking cukes and cabbages.. then there were some mysterious spots. now worms eating tomatoes and something in the squash.. My roommate is handling the garden. we are using all natural to fight them off. He's sprayed with everything from pepper to garlic mixes to keep them darn bugs away. and is constantly squishing beetles.. OH, FUN!. lol

our garden is hanging in there, too but for the opposite reason: the rain that you guys are lacking in the US is abundant over here in Germany. So far we haven't had any real summer yet. Only growing sunflowers at the moment which definintely need the sun. Herbs are also growing here but that's rank growth which will grow any time of the year in any weather. Hope your and my crop will still be good despite the weather :-)

The last really hot summer that I had a garden was many years ago, but I remember planting a lot of things in August and harvesting in September. People do not think of fall gardens here, but we may need to change that. I have not had this much success with herbs before, other than various types of mints. Now I have the most beautiful oregano, and parsley.

The zinnias will be cheerful. I have not tried growing them in a while. Some places do restrict gardens or make it hard to care for plants. I would really miss growing things, though.

Hi GardenGerty, we grow veggies in the surrounding vacant ground of our house. We can plant all kinds of tropical plants we love all the year round for the four seasons are not available here Veggies grow vigorously here and there only certain area are blank after the harvest recently. Preparing work is going on to sow new veggies plants. It's so nice to see the leafy veggies growing thriving around. There are rambutans hanging on the branches and they would get harvested when they turn red and look juicy It still have to wait for a month or so for the papayas to get ripe. I had just plugged some french beans and lady's fingers from the courtyard to prepare for our dinner. Happy posting and have a nice day

I had a gardener round for one morning and he made a new flowerbed for me with a mixture of soil conditioner and sad. First of all he dug out the weeds and the used a machine to dig up the chalk soil. Later this afternoon I am going to do my planting of hardy tropical looking plants it that area of my back garden. In my front garden he trimmed into shape my two trees. I had another gardener around for a quote last week and he gave me £40 to buy my greenhouse that I am trying to get rid of. He came round ton dismantle it yesterday but it was a hard job to do. He has taken the glass away but the frame will come down tomorrow evening I hope. I had a shed built in my garden and decorated it to look like a summer house. I added a thatched roof bird table. I got an arbor built in my garden too. arbor bird table summer house greenhouse get rid of it to make a children's play area my bungalow That is a map of my back garden. I bought in an end of catalog sale a slide and a sand pit. It is costing a lot to make my back garden look lovely. I moved to my bungalow last summer.

Oh, my poor garden. I left it to go up north for a 2 month vacation and although there are sprinklers to water the plants that I left (fruiting grapes, tomatoes, strawberries, and various flowers in bloom) there no care of them other than the little bit of water and these are the hottest months. I am afraid my garden is quite out of control. Hopefully the neighbors will not complain too much! Your garden sounds wonderful.

It needs weeding badly and it is just too hot and dry. Lawn needs mowing as well, where the water comes off the garden. I know that summer is a rough travel time if you try to have a garden as well.

Unfortunately I never got to get mine started this year, I bought the seeds and the starter stuff, but then I started having all of those anxiety problems and I was not able to get myself out to turn the soil and get the ground ready or even start the seeds, for about a month and a half I was in pretty bad shape. Now I am really sorry I didn't get one started, especially with my husband being out of work now. I did a garden last year and it was so nice to go out and pick fresh stuff to cook dinner with. I hope your garden starts to get better for you and you get all the veggies you want.
