"Once we can safely transplant animal organs into people, should we?"

Genetic engineering has so advanced that it will soon be possible to genetically engineer "humanized" animals to serve as a sort of living "human spare parts store." "Once we can safely transplant animal organs, should we?" is a poignant question being asked by bioethicists. "Do we have the right to take animal organs to save human lives?" is another question they ask. What is your opinion?

I think it's cruelty to animals.Maybe we can do that if it will be the last possible option.Besides,if I will be the patient I will not be comfortable if I have an animal tissue in me.I would prefer to be implanted with an artificial material, than to have animal tissues in my body. What if it will change our genetic make-up,and we will be adapting animal characteristics later? If our body is rejecting to human organs other than our own,how much more if its something that originated from animals.

I agree with you, I wouldn't want an animal organ in me.

Genetic engineering is wrong if it comes to modifying the complete genome of a species as you never know the consequences which can be fatal. It's like trying to reprogram a software. There's a huge potential of making mistakes. Better try making your own program by starting from scratch. Copying organs without the necessity to kill other animals may be okay though. If you could copy a heart, a lung, a leg or whatever just by letting grow such an organ on a culture medium which did not require the killing/ hurting of animals that would be cool. as for animals serving as human spare parts store it comes to the question: ''why is any life less worth than the other and who has the right to determine that?'' If you take a dog for example which you love as your pet you'd probably never allow people to take its organs away but maybe you would if the dog wasn't yours (a laboratory dog for example). But a dog that lives in the laboratory is no different from your pet, it feels pain and wants to live just as well. So free it instead of using it for experiments or spare parts :-) You'll see the happiness in its face.

Why not? If medical science can make it possible to safely transplant animal organs to human beings, I find nothing wrong in such transplantation as it is for the sake of saving human lives and we all know that whatever we do, we do it for the benefit of human beings.

If it can save human lives then why hesitate. Its not about animal cruelty or disrespecting animal rights, its about saving and extending a human life that can contribute to society. If they are able to do this, it should be supported.
