There is no rule that you have to tag but if you do I think more people see your discussion as it if I'm correct in saying it may appear in more places which gives you more chance of getting more answers

You may or may not use tags. But it is always better to use tags.

It is if you want to increase traffic to the questions you answer.

Over there ---
you will see a column called 'similar topics'. Those are other discussions with the same tags as this one. If you have tagged this one correctly when you started it then it will appear alongside other discussions about 'tagging' and could receive more activity when others see it in that column.
When you start a topic and use pertinent tags you can help others to find it when using the myLot search too.

Every now and again, if I really think of a useful tag that will really add to the conversation, I will really decide to tag the conversation. However there are a lot of times where the topic starter really has gotten all of the tags really out there. They have done a good job and I really am not able to think of really anything as I have answered the response.
So there are a lot of times where I go down the responses one at a time, one by one by one. Every now and again, there might be a tag for the response that really tends to appear in the back of my head. A lot of the times it might not but sometimes it is really not. Any topics that you create, you should tag them. However, answers, it really does not matter, unless you feel like its going to add something to the topic at hand.
