It's Only Hair!

I've heard of people spending over a hundred dollars a month on hair products, their barber shop visits (I think they call them beauty parlours or salons now), and accessories - like a huge box of scrunchies, baretts, and probably a bunch of other fancy-looking stuff that I don't know what....
I cut my own hair, I buy scrunchies at the dollar store, and purchase family-sized shampoo bottles - my hair probably cost me at the most five bucks a month - er, mine and my daughter's hair.
Why is it that people spend so much on hair? As long as it looks neat and tidy, and is clean, it should be alright and even attractive-looking.

I agree, but I cannot also blame people because of that. I think all of us have our own things that we spend a lot on. I spend extra on make up and clothes and shoes... Fortunately, my husband is supportive on that too... My husband for one spends on gadgets and those arent cheap either...

Well, true, I suppose it is up to the individual. I'm a frugal mom, so it's only my personal opinion.
I love gadgets myself, actually, but I had to stop buying them due to my debt issue, but I'll probably splurge on something next year, though, if I save up for it enough. (I'm planning on purchasing a higher-end professional camera for photography.)

I agree with you that spending a lot on hair care will not make it a lot more attractive than if you do it yourself.
There are lots of things that are expensive and many people think that because they are expensive, they are good.
I have been looking at caps and other hair covers as my heair fell out due to chemotherapy. Ther was this lady who sold turbans in my city. She had 3 horrid modls for about $18 a piece. I went to a yarn shop, bought a beautiful yarn for about $4. I already made a nice cap for bout $2 but I´ll use the other yarn to make a collar (very much in fashion) for another $2.
The cap is alrady finished and it´´s awesome.

My first cap was knitted with a lovely wool and big needles to make it easy. I just finished a scarf to go with it.

Well, maybe they have too much extra money to use it for their hair care.
But,granting that they have that much money to give their hair a hundred dollar care a month, wish they also consider to give a hundred dollar to any charities.
It is their money anyway and we can never questioned them,we only wish that they will spend it to a much noble cause.
Have a good day always

hello,
For me hair is a big issue! ha ha because if my hair looks good I feel that I am pretty all day. I just have a iron for hair and every day I used just to make my hair really look so good. If I dont have a nice hair day I feel so bored and ugly. LOL So, I really spend so much in my hair because I just want it to be like as good as it was. I know natural beauty is nice but my hair needs some care to be nice to others eyes.

Yup i have the same thinking as you i mean how can they spend thousand of dollars on hair products, and make so many things about their hair it's just wrong somehow i mean there are things in life that are way way way way more serious then your hair.i just cut my hair for 4 dollars in my country it's in leva and it is really cheap.I don't spend much money on it at all.Hair is just 0.001 of your life's problem's people shouldn't care about it so much.Well that's my opinion i can't change how they are thinking and their life.

Ya, I know. But yes, you're right, they do have the right to their own opinions, though. It's their money and they're entitled to do what they want with it. :-)

I somewhat agree, because I cut my own hair, but I do spend a little more on shampoo. I purchase my shampoo in bulk and it is a name brand that I like because it makes my hair soft. Expect last month my daughter convinced me to go to her salon and she said she will pay for it..She did, and I have another appointment, but I won't continue, because I don't see the need to really. Besides, I really don't like the cut I got, I prefer long hair. The only drawback is, I would like to keep my hair in layers, it does look neater that way, but the only cut I can do is straight across...

I don't do much with my hair either. I have dyed my hair before, and I plan to do it again, however, I don't spend too much, do the dying myself actually. I may consider havign someone else do it at some point, like a salon but for now I am not worried about it. In any case, family cuts my hair it's much cheaper (free) and looks just as good as if a barber had done it, and sometimes better!

First of all I don't have a beautiful hair, but I do not spend a lot for it. Well, aside from it is not in my list of priorities, I'm afraid it might get weak like others who were able to have their hair applied with several medicines to make it look good for teh mean time.

I think there's some natural remedies you can use for various types of hair conditions that doesn't cost an arm and a leg for them. Also, proper nutrition can help your hair look a lot better, both your hair and your finger/toe-nails.

You are so true.. I did those stupid stuffs for my hair and finally spoiled it. I love long hair and i had damages to it, so i tried all branded stuffs and it was fully spoiled. Finally i have stopped all and feeling it better.

Well it all depends on the resources you have.
Let me elaborate it for you. As you said that your monthly expense in $5 on hair, ok thats good. There are people out there who spend $100 on hair related products. good for them. You know the king of a country "Brunei" has his own private barber from US, King sends a private jet to fetch him to his place and he pays him better than what few CEOs of companies earn. Its all about the resources you have. We have to understand that there are people out there who dont have penny to spend on food, so forget the hair and beauty parlours. In my opinion if hair is neat, tidy and overall presentable then there is no need to spend dollars.

I heard that when Princess Diana was still married to Prince Charles she used to spend $10,000 per week on her hair services.

I'm with you, girl.I cut my own hair, too, and get bargain brands. Ladies around where I live go to the parlor to get their hair done and then fuss about it all the time. It's sprayed to the nth degree. I wouldn't want to touch it!
Hair's not worth the intense worry it gets, and fingernails aren't either.

Hehe, people spend tonnes of money on their finger-and-toe-nails, I think they're called pedicures or something like that. I cut keep mine cut right short, and don't bother with nail polish, either.

Exactly, there's lots of other important things to do other than superficial hair care.

I agree. I cut my own hair and use inexpensive shampoo and that's about it. If it gets frizzy or hard to handle, I rinse with vinegar and water and that takes care of it. I have naturally curly hair and it can be hard to control, so I tie it back a lot, although I have three barrette type of things that fasten it together in the back and makes it fall in a little more relaxed fashion.

hi mashihi oh G if I had an extra hundred dollars it would not go for my hair. I use Herbal Essence shampoo tousle me lightly and the conditioner and they are usually on sale in walmart. they make my hair shine and give some ligt curl. 'Clean well washed and conditioned hair is lovely and need not be costly at all. if you had that extra hundred you could then use it to buy an Exercycle and get rid oft any extra weight so you will look good hair wise and figure wise too.I do not cut my own hair as the one time I did it , it was just awful and I had to go to a salon to have it cut properly there is such a thing as overdoing it on the save money on your hair bit. to be too miserly can lead to costly errors in hair care. so I would rather err on spending a little more and not ruining my hair.

I suppose in my case I'm not being too miserly, as I'm really working very hard to pay off my debt as soon as I can before anything happens to Canada's economy, or any other unforseen even comes up. I've cut corners in every way I can possibly can, and putting extra money on to my debt's principle. Maybe when I get rid of my debt, I'll go to a cheap barber shop to have my hair cut to a short length.

Because I have very long and thick hair down my back, I cannot cut it myself. I have to go to a salon to trim and or cut each time. I don't spend much on hair care, thankfully and do keep it tidy and neat, I think lol..
Yes sometimes people can cut their own and I think that is neat to be able to.

It takes me a while to cut my hair, perhaps a half an hour. I have someone who has full vision to check for any unevenness, and usually I hit right on target, which is good.

I am using the same shampoo as long as I can remember. Guilty. I have my hair done/cut/trim monthly in the salon and if I want to put some henna i spent around QR500 (US$138). My long hair is not dry. I am vain and spending for hair is no big deal.

eh... it's not vain to take care of your hair. I've seen people who don't take care of their hair and don't take care of their bodies... and again, not a pretty sight. It's just a shame when people do not take care of themselves when we have all the tools and knowledge to do so. It is not expensive either unless you let nature and circumstances have their way with you BEFORE you take action lol.
