Closed containers should be used in place of open ash trays

Before I quit smoking I started using glass jars with lids and with a little water in them as my ash tray. I had them on my patio (I never smoked inside) and I had a jar in my car. If I needed an emergency ash tray, I'd use plastic (usually an empty water bottle) with a little water, but I had to be careful not to burn the side and melt plastic. I did that a couple of times and it wasn't pretty
I always thought this was any excellent idea and wish the habit could catch on. It eliminates the awful stale cig smell of old burned cigs. Of course the best is to quit smoking but this was a good idea, in my opinion.

That does sound like a good idea, but better to use glass. I know when I used to go to movie theatre (when dinosaurs roamed the earth) that many of the movie theatres had ash trays that the ashes just fell into a bin and a lid went over it. I supposed they were specifically made for the movies because of the patrons that did not smoke.

I never saw that. What a good idea. Now why weren't more ash trays made that way. I agree glass is best, but if I didn't have glass available I have used plastic with a large opening. I always put some water in the container to put out the cig. If I didn't have water available, I would just pour in whatever I might be drinking like a little coffee, coke, etc.

It was a rather fancy movie house. That was back in the days when they looked like palaces and it was just in the high end places. It was not in the neighborhood movie theatre. We hardly went to movies, it was a treat and only for important block busters.
It would be like going to see Harry Potter now or Star WArs back in the 0s. I think it was the cost. After all if you paid a lt for a ticket, then he movie house could afford it.

Unfortunately that is only good if one doesn't have children or dogs that can knock the glass jar over and break it. I don't smoke anymore, and this won't prevent the smell from penetrating the area, but I do have a aluminum can outside with sand in it for when my daughter's boyfriend comes over. I also use it to put in hot matches after I light my candles, so it does double duty..

I understand, I like the smell of a pipe, but that is rare today, to see someone smoking a pipe..But be careful stary, second hand smoke is just as bad if not worse..

I think this is a good idea, and it eliminates some fire hazards as well. I am glad that you have quit smoking.

Good idea.
When I used to smoke I had to constantly go around and empty ash trays as I am allergic to dust. I have read a tip to help you when give up smoking - to keep butts and ash in a jar with a lid, and whenever you feel like a smoke, just open the lid and have a smell :)

You can also use the container to give up smoking. Keep it after you've put out a couple of dozen cigs in it. Every time you feel like smoking, open it and take a good, long sniff. That'll turn your stomach and put you off smoking.
(Yes, I smoke... just in the process of prepping to stop!)

Can't stand gum - it makes my stomach feel empty, since I'm effectively chewing air. I was on 12-15 a day and am now on 2. One more short step to take and it's done with. Just need to let it settle at 2 for a short while, first.
Thanks for the good wishes.

This is a good idea and will have to try it myself. I would like to say like you that I too quit but not successful to date. I will be trying something new soon with the hopes I can kick the habit.
