We don't maintain a dollar account anymore. This currency is just not as stable as it was years ago. I don't think it's a good investment to have your money in dollars, especially if it's not the currency used by your country.
And so what if the dollar falls? Are you affected? Well, my paypal earnings are definitely affected! It's value may deteriorate half way for all I know; and especially if the US government don't settled their debt payment issues!
Other than that, I'm fine.
What about you guys? Any overseas workers out here? Share us your views.

I will surely affect because all the internet earnings are mostly in dollars.
Here in India I get almost Rupees 50 for 1 dollar and if the dollar's rates are down then the earnings will also diminish.

Hi akki! That's right, whatever money we have in paypal I think it's best if we convert them to our local currencies to save on forex. What do you think?

Yes, that's one consideration. Do you often shop online? Coz I don't. I only pay memberships online and sometimes I use my paypal money to do that.

Since the Us ollar has fallen, my earnings have fallen because the Australian dollar is higher than the US dollar for the first time in over 20 years...so I lose out of money when it's changed over to the Aussie dollar...other than that, I don't care coz if I want to buy anything in the US, it's cheaper for me & makes it cheaper to travel there if I wanted to.

Hi moonchild! AUD is a strong currency. Good for you guys! You're not affected by whatever's happening in the US.
Somehow, you're also affected my friend if you prefer buying stuffs from the US since the prices of goods may also increase due to inflation.
How I hope I can get money in other currency. Would you know any site?

beingwell,
I believe we should all care and be very concern since the dollar is directly involved and responsible for the world's economy.
As you've already seen at the beginning of the week where the share indexes have been falling worldwide, sending warnings that there might be another recession around the corner. Now, I am sure you would be aware what this will mean if the latter really happens where for one people like you and me might be loosing our jobs.
Also, I am sure you are aware that banks around the world including yours are investing heavily in US stocks and guess what will happen when recession happens. Let's not forget that all our monies and investments are with our banks.
I hate to say this but the hard fall of this currency really matters to people like you and me.

beingwell,
If you are working, then you might be concern if your company will be affected by the next wave of recession resulted from this. Studies revealed in the last recession that 87% of small and medium companies had failed and wound up causing mass unemployment.
I know tomorrow may take care of itself but it certainly ain't gonna take care of you if you are ill prepared. Remember chances favored those who are prepared.

Hi sky! Perhaps, you are right. However, I don't feel that I need to be utterly concerned of what is or is not to happen with today's economy. Although, I am aware that you and I may be or better yet, are affected with the strength of the dollar, I choose to live today and let tomorrow take care of itself.
Cheers my friend!

Since our paypal earning will get affected, that is for sure what do you think we should do sis?? Withdraw the paypal money before the second August?(^^)
I am a bit confused about the US debt. When the government has no money the employer still have cash to pay their employee right? Otherwise that could be a huge impact to US citizen.

I hope they really have that amount of cash~ We know that the US government can turn a day without money to a day with a lot of money.I read news in the last few days that Apple have more cash than the US government~ The only way to settle this is to raise the U.S. borrowing limit. I wonder To whom does the US government really owe money?

I still believe the US government has money to pay its debts. All of them. It's just the republicans and democrats are not in agreement as to how much because there's politics all over the issue. It's leading to the next presidential election on 2012. tsk, tsk...
Anyway, I'm afraid if the deadlock continues, the value of the US dollar will definitely decline. Now it's Php42:$1. After the deadline, it may be Php20:$1. There goes my paypal earnings!

I am an Indian. I do not know even the ABC of economics. So I do not know whether I have to care if the dollar falls hard because I am still now not sure whether our currency rupee will be cheaper or dearer in comparison to dollar then.

We are all relatively affected with the economy of the US and other parts of the world. However, if you feel not to be concerned about politics and economics, that's your right!
Thanks for your response my dear.

Me and my husband bought $5,000 in 2007 for a US Trip at an exchange rate of around PhP57. We are maintaining a dollar time deposit accumulated from excess dollars from trips of the same amount but the exchange rate now is around P42. So I do really care My earnings as an Online Researcher is also in USD and my PayPal earnings from other transactions are in dollars. sad. sad. sad. I don't even think dollar will again reach P50.

Hi bubbletush! I remember buying USDs in 2007-2008 for $53-$54 a piece. We used to maintain dollar accounts but we had to let it go if we don't want to lose more money. It's not a good investment now as it were before. And yes, it may take a long long while before the dollar strikes back at $50.

Well yes, I think I do care, given that its going to really affect me a lot of the time. Of course, here is one point that I find humorous. Those government officials who got us in this fix in the first place by their own greed over said dollars and thus prevented a sane solution from being reached, they are going to be slightly affected as well. Talk about hanging yourself with your own custom fit noose.
Its going to be an ugly, bumpy ride if the dollar falls all, and I think that other countries around the world are going to see some kind of backwash as well, although nothing near what the United States will feel. Some people have said a really bad recession, flirting dangerously with the levels of a depression. I certainly do not hope not, but it is really a scary state of affairs for numerous reasons. Hopefully we'll get someone competent in the government someday.

Hi megamatt! It's true, what you're saying. That's how it makes me think... Perhaps, they have a master plan of what's actually happening in the global economy. Could it be that they are deliberately dragging the dollar down up to a certain point then announce a drastic game changer at the end of it all?? ...Hmmm, just thinking...

The dollar being cheap is a good thing for me, as I can buy stuff from the US online and get it for a really cheap price. Shipping expenses make the price rise, but not so much, as it's in dollars too.
As a person living in a country that isn't the US, that's as far as it affects me, but I suppose that for people living there it has to be hard if it falls even more.

Hi madteaparty! Well yes, that's true as well. If you have money in your paypal account, and you normally buy online, why not buy some US goods.hihihi More so, if you have friends from the US who are going back to your country, have them buy the goods for you. Tell them, you'll pay in USD!

Hi cinderellar! It's a popular currency yes because for the longest time, US has been the super power of the world. Now however, things are starting to change. USD may not be the best currency out there. I would root for AUD or CND and Euro, if you'd ask me.

Hi there warrior. Well, most of us get $$ online. Some are also paid in euros and some in their own currencies. I guess the USD would continue to fall. But now, it's value is declining at a slower pace.
I'm also being paid in paypal. I just hope to earn more so I don't notice the decline in dollar value.

I am a filipino and of course the dollar value affects me as well when it comes to my paypal account but i'm not working overseas so it's a good news in our country when dollar drops due to the fact that philippine debt is in dollars and everything that we import are dollars (specially oil) transportation/electricity will be cheaper if dollar drops down. But at the same time our export industry will be hit hard if dollar value continue to drop. So overall I think it's better if dollar value goes down it will benefit our country as a whole.

Hihih... Our country's main industry now is labor. Overseas workers. If dollar goes down, a lot of Filipino families' income would be affected. I don't think it's good for the USD to continue to fall. I hope it stabilizes at least.

Of course. I can say that US is most powerful country. If they fall, everyone gets affected. It has been proven as you can see, we are experiencing economic crisis because of US debt. With regard to my paypal earnings, I'll just keep my earning grows until the exchange rate gets better. I'm gonna withdraw it immediately when the exchange rate is fair enough.

I'm a Canadian who divides my time between Ontario in the summer and Texas in the winter. Yesterday I transfered several thousand Canadian dollars to an account in BMO where I get Canadian currency changed to American dollars. I'll wait until the Can dollar hits $1.10 US and buy Us dollars. I'll make $100 on every thousand US that I buy.

That's great what you're doing!
But I'm a bit confused. If you're spending USD in the US, then whatever you've gained you're just returning to the US gov't. I think the price of US commodities will definitely rise, once the dollar declines in value.

If the United States Dollar falls it will cause a Global Depression as most of the Big Super Corporations use the United States Dollar as there main assets. This will mean the entire world will be effected if the United States Dollar falls off in value. The US dollar is the Dollar of World Commerce because it has the most acceptance around the world. This is because of the Big Companies that use the Dollar as they are United States Based Companies and even foreign companies rely on the United States dollar. So mass layoffs could happen across the world if the United States Government doesn't raise the Debt ceiling. This will effect the Value of every other currency on the planet.
This will cause another recession across the world in which people will be fired. So for your sake and the whole worlds sake you should care because we are no longer nations that are separated. The Global Economy means we are all going to be effected if a nation doesn't take care of their Business. Especially if that Country is the major consumer of world goods which the United States is the biggest consumer in the whole World if we do less business with countries because the value of the dollar has decreased this will mean less money going into companies across the world less money means less jobs. So people will be effected who don't live in the United States by this and it could cause some serious issues.

Hi dark. I am concerned, as well but not that much. You are right that we are all inter-connected as nations of the world. However, what can one do but to hope for the best. If you have some suggestions on how we can help, fire away! I'm listening.

Dollar failing would impact some of our industries very much, especially like Information Technology, Financial, Textile, Garments which are export oriented. Dollar depreciating against Indian currency - Rupees would make Indian products a tad expensive for Americans and other countries' people too. That could dent Indian exports. However, oil imports burden would lessen for Indian Oil companies, and price burden on consumers would decrease.
SO, it won't be all white or all black.

Hi Beingwell, I think you have missed the true purpose of US government letting US dollar declines.
The whole purpose is to make the debt so worthless that China will not gain.
China bought too much US debt already.
If the US dollar declines to half the value, then China will lose a lot of money.
When the buying power of a dollar becomes just fifty cents, then China would lose the use of fifty cents.
But then, the holders of US debt are mainly Americans.
US is trying to cheapen the rate, so that jobs will return to US.
