According to research avocado leaves, bark, skin or pit contains a toxic fatty acid persin, which in sufficient quantity can cause equine colic and without treatment may lead to death. Most common symptoms are gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhoea, respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the tissues of the heart and even death to certain birds and rabbits. The fatty acid persin is said to be not harmful to humans and others say avocado leaves is a good cleansing for the kidney. But just to be safe only eat the avocado fruit.
