Today, I read a very depressing article in yahoo. You can check out the link for more details. http://bit.ly/nMBtQC "A post-mortem revealed that 20-year-old Chris Staniforth -- who was offered a place to study Game Design at Leicester University -- was killed by a pulmonary embolism, which can occur if someone sits in the same position for several hours." This article was really an eye opener not only for gamers but for everyone who lives a sedentary lifestyle. Like I have mentioned in one of my discussions, experts advice that we take breaks from sitting. I really feel sad for the family of the boy. :( Also, I shared the article on my facebook and twitter account because I want to spread awareness of the dangers of living a sedentary lifestyle.

Same here, I really feel bad since I can relate with the victim but it's not yet too late. We are still alive :), let's exert efforts on ending a sedentary lifestyle and TAKE BREAKS FROM SITTING from in one position. 5 minutes of standing and doing some physical activity would somehow help us. Anyway, having regular exercise and a good diet are also recommended :0

Does it count if you work a sedentary office job too though? And how long is *too long* to sit in one place? This makes me nervous as one of my jobs is a sedentary one in front of a computer. I guess any kind of unhealthy/sedentary lifestyle is bound to cause problems.

Well any activity that requires you to sit for a long period is definitely not healthy if you won't take breaks from sitting in that position. Studies suggest that taking BREAKS like 5 minutes every hour is good for you. It's really hard to avoid sitting for a long duration especially if your job requires it, nevertheless I think it won't be a hassle if you take breaks every hour :). Stand up and do some stretching, also it would be great if you will be able to encourage your co-workers.

yes that is correct, if one sits for a very long time, the blood in our legs dont flow very well and so it will coagulate or clot and this clot can travel through the veins of our hearts and lungs and that is how it can kill us. for people who are traveling in planes for hours, they are advised to stand up and walk once in a while to help blood flow.
