VIP movie theater section?

So I went to Crazy Stupid Love last night with my friend, and we met at the theater. He bought my ticket (UGH) and surprised me with that we were sitting in "VIP". I had never heard of such a thing before this - VIP at a movie theater?!
Anyway, it turned out to cost about $5 more per ticket (my friend paid $15 per ticket..for a total of $30? WTF?) and all the VIP section was was more comfortable seats, a little more room, and a seat above the rest of the crowd, about 4-5 rows.
Definitely an unnecessary luxury, for people who just want to spend more money (when movies are already incredibly expensive). What kind of couple wants to see a movie for $30 total - plus drinks and popcorn etc?
Have you ever heard of a VIP section at a movie theater? Do you think it's overrated, too?

Movie tickets are already expensive as it is, I don't think a $5 extra charge each for a comfy seat is worth it.
I haven't seen that VIP section in our local theater.
One day a week, our local theater charges a discounted price. That's usually when we go.

Good plan. I don't even like watching movies, you're right - $10 to see a movie that you probably won't even like? MMmm no thanks. Unfortunately my friend dragged me into going (and he paid), so I thought what the heck. But this "VIP section" nonsense seemed like the most unnecessary 'luxury' I have ever heard of (OK, not the most, but pretty much up there). Must be for the people who want to make sure OTHER people know they have money.

A long time ago at our local cinema when the seats had rows and numbers you could buy tickets and reserve seats in advance to make sure you had the best seats, or the back row to make out. But I am talking a long time ago and the cost was only about £1.00 more than the cost of the normal ticket.
I haven’t seen that service being offered since they refurbished and the seat rows and numbers were scrapped. But I have seen areas reserved for block bookings, like someone has brought 20 tickets to take a group of kids out for a birthday treat, which to be honest is a good idea.
Personally I wouldn’t pay more just to have a VIP seat because to be honest it doesn’t matter where you sit as a movie can still be spoilt by inconsiderate people in the audience, talking, texting and basically being an annoyance.

I've never heard of it nor have gone to one. I don't think we have a VIP section in a movie theatre here in my country. Maybe someday there will be one because there are a lot of corrupt people here. That means there are a lot of selfish people living in this country.

What a rip-off! I am glad it was a gift and that you didn't waste your own money buying a VIP seat. Maybe if it included free popcorn and soda. . .or at least free refills, but, otherwise--DEFINITELY not worth the extra money. I would never pay extra for a "special" seat--and I have never seen a VIP section, in any event.
Have a great day!

YES, absolutely overrated. It's just another way to rake in a couple more dollars times the millions of people in there. You both see the movie regardless and I don't think the cheaper seats are the most uncomfortable chairs made. At my local movie theatre its close to $20 for popcorn a large drink and like a hotdog or something. I'm just like wow...
9/10 times I sneak stuff in :) and whats stopping you from paying for original seats and seating in VIP? :)
