how do you trap a rat?

My husband has been currently liquidating a rat or two that we noticed to be eating our fruits , our sack of rice and some vegetables we are airing overnight in the kitchen
He sets a rat trap at night , with some morsel of fried fish. So far, he was able to kill two rats with it already, the weeks that passed.
But lately, the trap was ineffective. The rat was too wise , that in the morning i would see the morsel of food taken out of the trap, yet the rat wasn't killed.
It's funny and frustrating , but i think we are being outwitted by the rat!

I have come to notice that rat traps normally don't work. I told my hubby one day, "I wonder if rats actually attend a course on how to stay away from them or outsmart the traps", because it seems that no matter how many traps you place they find a way around them. I have found that rat poision is a bit more effective, and now a days that have no odor.

Yes, they become smart after one or two of them has been caught by the traps. That's what happened to the rats at home.
Well, we haven't used the glue traps yet, but it seems the rats are gone from our house. Hmm, where could they be?

For me just only buy a cage we inserted food to it and we open it until they trap and they can't scape then we caught the rat after all.

We will try that if the large glue trap that menace suggested will not be effective. Thanks for sharing! That was nice of you my friend. I really appreciate it.

Well in market now a days there are so many "Rat kill" tablets. They have some peculiar smell which attract rats and then these are eaten by rats. But these tablets are some sort of poison so the rats die. So if your trap thing is not going on well you can try this.

yes, we will trying both of that, as previously suggested by the first responders. Hopefully, one of these will really help us totally eliminate those rats.
Thank you for your suggestion. It is really appreciated.

You should buy rat poison. Just be careful to keep it away from children and dont transfer it into an unlabeled container It's funny to hear intelligent rats going about their business without being crushed by the laid trap.

You can try the Figure 4 Deadfall or Paiute Deadfall traps. They are quite effective in killing/trapping rather large rodents/animals like rats. It's very simple and cheap to construct. I used a wide and heavy board to do it and was able to catch quite a few rats.
You can find some instructions on the Internet how to construct them. Just search "figure 4 Deadfall" or "Paiute Deadfall". There are even some videos on YouTube on how to constuct them such as this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTCQHhWaFBE

Thanks sup3rdud3 for suggesting that. I might do that if Menace's and whengcat's advices will fail.
Hopefully, this time we can outwit the rats.

We use flytrap to trap mouse and it is effective only for small rats or mices. If we notice little rats roaming in the house, we set up the trap immediately because we don't want it to get bigger. For bigger mouse, better use a mouse trap and use a bait which could attract a mouse. A good bait could be a roasted coconut meat which very attractive to them.

I think you are right in having a good bait that could be a roasted coconut meat. The rats that come into our house are not that very big. They are actually farm rats. So that explains why the piece of fish was not eaten but just left there beside the trap which the rat has avoided.
They want those vegetables and fruits indeed and the rice in the sack, because they are vegetarian.
Thanks for sharing that!
