Hi mylotters! :)
There are several dilemmas in our life that we experience. We are often faced by confusing situations where in you want to do something that you think will make you happy but is not the right thing. I won't give any particular examples, its up on your own interpretation of the question. If you are in this kind of situation, what would you do? Would you do the thing that will make you happy even though its a bad thing? Or you'd rather do something good even though it will just hurt you in any way? Share your thoughts and maybe you can include some of your real life experiences in here. :)

If what will make me happy will hurt others, i would rather choose to do the right thing. I know that if i do the right thing, i wouldn't make anyone unhappy. Though, i may not be so happy doing it, but the thought that i am doing others happy is enough for my hurt to be compensated.

Thank you for saying that.
My conscience can't just take it that i would be happy , while others will be sad because of it.

Hi SIMPLYD :)
Yeah, if you do the right thing that might not hurt anyone except yourself. You're so humble for that :). You are willing to let go of your happiness for the sake of others. I salute you on that! :)

I am trying to be a fair person so therefore for me it is important to do what's right. Even if it might in some way be harmful to me. It all depends on a situation, but usually it is so. I must also mention, that I don't feel happy when I have done something wrong.

Definitely, playing fair is a good attitude. I also agree that doing something wrong, no matter how small thing it is, will make us guilty.

I always tend to do the right thing although I may be tempted to do what would be the most fun or benefit me most, but my concience will not let me do it. I am always feeling guilty about even thinking about not doing the right thing, and in the end I always end up doing the right thing even if it is not the best for me or an inconvenience for me.

That's so kind of you. You'll sacrifice your happiness if its for a better reason and that it is the right thing. Thanks for that! :)

Hi, I've been in situations like this before, of course. But sometimes doing the right thing is actually what makes me happy and the thing I want to do is sometimes the right things. But when there are times that doesn't happen that way.. ex. I'm supposed to wash the dishes and everyone will be happy but I'm tired so I don't wan to. Then, I'll probably try to do the right thing. When I get really exhausted, I will do what I want because if it gets me sick then I will not be useful later. Me first.

Those things are not always at the opposite ends of the spectrum. There are a lot of times where I feel that the right thing can also be the thing that can bring me the most joy. However, there are a lot of times where I think that the right thing is going to really affect me in a bad way and there are times where it will only bring me down for a short time.
So how badly will it hurt me? If not too much at all, I can swallow my pride and do it. If it rather drastically causes me problems and its not immoral or illegal, then really there are times where I have to do the right thing for me. We have to learn a bit about self preservation and that is more or less not always doing the right thing. Now granted we need to weigh these situations carefully and that can be a bit of a problem to say the least.

The only situation that I can put myself in your question is about my college. One time, I thought in do another course, but it's pretty difficult to earn a good amount of money and to established yourself in the profession. So, now I study Medicine. I like the course, but I don't know if I love. Well, I guess that in the future I'm going to find out if I made the right decision.

Oh yeah, I know a lot of people with that kind of dilemma. That's really tough to go for a college course. But I don't think you should look at earning money easily after graduating. I think you should value more your interest on what career to take. Anyway, earning money easily after graduating can be done through a lot of other things. :)

as my parents would say, the right thing would make me happy. so in the surface, there must be no contradiction between the what will make me happy and what is right. because if it is truly right, then it will supposedly make me happy. it is because of the shifting of values in the modern times that we have dilemmas. the right and wrong start to be blurry, when long time ago, it was so clear.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by it hurting you? But i guess that can stay left to be desired if it has to be.
I think that what makes you happy should be the right thing. Life is about living and making the most out of life before we all well, die. I think that we should spend more time considering what we want out of life and the steps we need to take to get there. Then our happiness will always be the most important thing in our lives. Life is nothing without a good quality of life and that comes with a smile.

Hi dont_pick_your_nose :)
Uhm, what I mean is that there are things you should do because its the right thing but it can bring bad effects on you. For example, loving someone with parents who don't want you to love their child. In that situation, leaving him/her seems to be the right thing but being with him/her will make you happy.

I am not doing office job anymore. People are discriminating and hurting me anyway. Online is the job that makes me happy. Even though I might earn less, I am happy that I found freedom.

Good thing you're happy now. So, you won't go back to your office job again ever? What if you try to find some other work/office? Maybe the people there will treat you better than the ones who were your companions before. :)

Since you asks opinion with the title,i want to share my views.
Once in my life I did choose a decision that makes me happy and it's the right thing because it caused pain to my loved ones.
Yes,I choose the man I love inspite my family opposing.
It's not right to hurt my family, but i did,for my own happiness.
I am sure some also did it,and maybe regretted after.
have a good day and welcome to mylot

So you chose the one that made you happy. That's good for you. I guess it all turned out well still after making that decision. Yes, I know some also have chosen the one that makes them happy even though they might have hurt someone else. Have a nice day :)

Sometimes i just feel like to do anything i want no matter it is good or bad.But usually i don't do bad things.LOL.. Making yourself happy is not easy ,if you have some thoughts that are creative and could really make you happy, just do it.There isn't a rule to balance right or wrong.Have a nice day.

Hi jricky1 :)
So you mean you don't care at all upon making decisions? That wont matter as long as you don't hurt anyone. But yeah, you are correct that there is no definite rule on judging whether a thing is right or wrong.

Tough one! I will firts try to weigh out the situation. I have learned from my Philosophy class a technique on how to weigh in the advantages and the disadvantages of a certain decision. Noting all the would be effects and summing up the more critical of them will give you a nice view on what decision to take. But as a shortcut to this heavy thinking technique, I just try to assess the undesirable effect that may happen. If the effect is not really a big deal, then I'll go on and do what makes me happy. If a lot depended on that decision, then I'll go for doing the right thing. It really depends on a situation and how things might result from it. But I believe that there always is a way to compromise things and make a decision resulting into a win-win situation. Having that kind of principle in life, you can be happy and be doing the right thing at the same time. The key is adjusting to be happy and right at the same time.

Definitely! It depends on the situation. I also think that there is no absolute right decision in the world. Decisions can have good and bad effects depending on the person interpreting it. The question would now be on what effect will be the more prominent that it can compromise the other effect. :)

Thanks bholebaba19 for the response :).
So, you're really pursuing what makes you happy. At least you're trying to cinvince them and not just decide on your own :).

It depends on the situation. If It will not harm other people, then i'll take it even though it hurts. I am matured enough to know what's right and what's wrong. And I have to be strong enough to face the consequences.

That's brave of you to face any consequences your decisions might have. Good thing that also would like to consider other feelings before coming up to a decision. :)
