How do you handle pain?

Most of us are not good at handling pain, and when it comes our way we tend to move past it as quickly as possible, take a pill and brush it under the rug. This however, is not always the best option, not only because it may be a warning of something gone seriously wrong with our body, but also because pain accepted and honored, can often prove to be a great friend and teacher. We all know that often the more we resist something, the longer it persists. When we honor our pain, we do just the opposite of resisting it, and as a result, we create a world in which we can own the fullness of what life has to offer.

Hi Pose, how have you been ? I agree with what you say,the more you think about pain physical or others the more it tends to hurt us .One should try and overcome and only then it is possible to bear it ...Pain is part and parcel of life, so it is better to accept it and as you say honor it..all the best

Well, personally I feel I take pain a lot better than most. Because of dealing with the Chronic wounds this is sometimes a pain that would make many keel over with, but I can usually deal with, and I also have Fibromyalga which means I deal with a lot of Chronic pain with that as well. So overall my tolerance of pain is really good. Overall it really is a matter of what a person is able to handle with willpower and determination while learning to overcome.

I have a pretty high pain threshold so I wouldn't say I "handle" pain at all really. If I have any pain (which is rare) I'll try sleeping or having a bath. I went to the doctors several times about back pain but they were never interested so, as it doesn't bother me that much, I just ignore it and occasionally get my big sister (who is an aromatherapist and masseuse) to give me a massage!

Hi Pose: I first try to ignore it, second I try to concentrate on other things that will take the pain away like for example reading or writing. If there's nothing I can do, I pray to ask God to use this pain for my salvation. I try to handle the pain when it's possible to do this. I think it can make you in some cases stronger actually.

If the pain is in the leg and if it is due to walking or running after a long cap, then we should not take any pain killer and instead of we again walk or run, the pain will get vanish. If it is due ill health, we will not be able to tolerate the pain and we may have consult a doctor and on his advice we have to act.

I've recently had to deal with pain in a serious way after living most of my life "walking it off". I was raised not to show pain or let it interfere with what I was doing, so it nearly destroyed me emotionally when I started to get pain and weakness at levels that truly inhibited my daily activities.
My advice to everyone is, like yours seems to be, to take pain seriously. There is no shame in getting yourself checked out and no shame in getting help for your pain.
Love,
The Rat in Pain (but less pain than I used to have)

Hi BalthasarTheRat, Thank you for sharing and we have to take pain seriously, at least until we know the cause. Often we need medical attention. Stay away from painkillers except when absolutely necessary and remember that we do have the strength to deal with pain and it makes us a stronger person. Blessings.

If the pain is very strong and I cannot tolerate it, I will really grab one pain reliever to knock it off. But if the pain persist or is a recurrent pain then that's another story. The next more should be seeking for medical assistance to finally know the reason behind the recurrence of that pain.

Hi friend. Yes you are correct. Most of us are not good at handling pain.. Because we are not ready to accept it.. Pains gives us tears, Pain is a kind of negative sign. So we tend to move past it as quickly as possible.. Time is the best solution to heal.. So we are not ready to live in painful attitude. That's why we are making it as a past and trying to get relief from it.. Very nice topic friend.. Really all your valuable discussion topics are thought provoking..

Hi balaji85in, Thank you for responding. It's true that we don't always handle pain well but looking for the quick fix is not always the answer. Painkillers have side effects that are sometimes dangerous, although there are times when they may be necessary. Pain when handled right can make us stronger. Blessings.

When it comes to bodily pain I would take a pill if the pain is too much. And when it comes to emotional pain, the best way that I handle it is to give it time to heal while I strive to learn how to avoid it next time. And thinking that it is something to help me grow stronger makes pain even less harder to bear.

Nobody likes pain, physically or emotionally and its emotional pain that hurts the most I believe. I experience occasional headaches and stomach pains due to heartburn but because I experience them so often, I've somehow just gotten use to it. I basically deal with it and carry on like nothing happened. Some of my friends don't handle pain too well, they're always complaining and in a sour mood. Emotional pain is much deadlier, harder to control and more difficult to find relief from. Pain's a barrier and you must persist to overcome it in order to carry on with life.

I always get massages even from friends... they relieve stress naturally and are relaxing... just be sure to set your boundaries because there are some perverted people out there..

It depends on the type of pain and the cause. I rarely take painkillers (maybe 2-3 per month). If it is something that I know I need to take a painkiller for, I will.
I do, however, hold off on taking painkillers for things for which the cause of the pain is unclear. I don't want to take things that risk masking the symptoms of something that might be serious.

Pain comes in many forms, short, annoying, sharp, long lasting, nagging and on and on. Each has it's own cause and reaction. For me pain that is long lasting and the cause already known I treat with exercise and EFT. For unfamiliar pain, I need to learn the cause so medical help is needed. There are other pains and if injury is involved I try to treat and then resort to medication. Heat, cold, rest and sleep is often all it takes to cure the pain. Medication comes last on my list.

Hi savypat, Thanks for sharing and I agree as medication is last on my list as well. I have not had a lot of success with EFT, but know that many people have. We do need to seek medical help when we don't know the cause but chronic pain can be character building if we accept it as such. Blessings.

Depends on the pain really. There are different levels of pain in the body and some of them are just minor that can be worked through. Others are a sign of something that is rather more serious. The problem is that I think many people rather do have a slightly warped sense of what pain is serious and what pain is not all that serious to say the very least.
Those who take pills to sweep the problem underneath the rug, that's asking for a lot of trouble and a one way road to addiction if you're not too responsible. If its a minor pain, then its a judgment call but if the pain continues after rest, then perhaps you should consult a doctor. It could be a false alarm or something more serious but you can never tell.

I think I handle pain good for the most part.I will try to write and get my mind off of the pain or watch a movie, talk on the phone with a friend, ect.A pill can't always be the answer to certain pain.

I don't agree with some of your opinion. Pain is not something I would like to accept. Life is too short for suffering if you don't have to suffer. I can agree that pain is the first sign that something is wrong with your body and then you have to seek medical advise. But I would never accept pain. Few years ago I had serious accident and then pain was my companion every day. Have you ever felt pain so sever that you wanted to die? I did. And I know that this is not something I would like to accept and live with.

Hi koperty, I have felt severe pain but maybe not to the extent that you have, but I still feel that some pain can be character building. I have a friend who is in constant pain, and while sometimes he has to take medication, usually he can deal with the pain without it. I am amazed at his acceptance and his ability put pain aside and refuse to let it define who he is. Thank you for sharing. Blessings.
