Yesterday was feast of St. Ignatius and since my son goes to a catholic school, it was a holiday for them, which means NO CLASS! So we went to the mall and just went around. We went to the National Bookstore because i was looking for some books for my class. To my surprise, he scanned for books and found Horrid Henry.
It was on sale at $2 so he begged me to buy that book for him. Without hesitation i did! I'd rather buy him books than toys for that matter. It makes me feel better that he's interested in reading than just playing. He started reading it immediately and even had the book next to his bed and read it before going to sleep.

hi toni.
my daughter prefers books over toys as well. sure, she would occasionally ask me to accompany her to toy kingdom or toy r us to look for a new accessory or dress for her barbie dolls but more often, she would ask me to go to a nearby bookstore so that she can browse the books and see if she wants to buy a couple. i'm all for this since books are far more valuable than toys in my opinion. just to stress how much my daughter favors books over toys, we'd spend at the most thirty minutes looking for her barbie accessories but we would spend at the least two hours in her favorite bookstore browsing and looking through books.
mighty proud about this trait of my daughter and i'm glad that she got the same passion for books and reading from me.

That's really great! My son spends more time in the library during lunch break than playing with kids. In fact one time his classmates got caught by their teacher playing loudly in the corridor which wasn't aloud, then one child squealed and implicated my son but his teacher didn't believe and even said that Craig isn't like that because he prefers staying in the library than playing.
Every time he comes home he brings a new borrowed book from the library and would take the time reading them before going to sleep. Last night he even started writing his own book as he was inspired by the authors!

Hi !
Reading is one of the best hobbies and if it is inculcated in childhood it brings rich dividends. It is heartening to hear that your son was interesting and purchasing a reading a book. You must encourage him and bring him as much book of his choice, as he wants.

I have bought him plenty of books including bible story books. In fact right now he's reading that Horrid Henry book again. It has become a habit of his to read before going to sleep.

It's good to see that there are some kids that will choose books over toys. As a kid, I too did prefer books over toys, as a general rule of thumb. Honestly, if my kids were to ask me for a book rather than a toy, I wouldn't really hesitate getting it for them, whenever possible. It's good that he ask for a book himself. It's really nice to see some kids do it themselves, especially considering that it seems that a lot of kids are losing interesting in reading books.

I'm proud that he's developing that kind of habit and he's really into books. What i like when he's reading is that he's imaging what's in the story which means he comprehends it. He's not reading for the sake of reading but reading it with comprehension.

It's great that your son is developing a love for reading early on.
I was the kid who always had a book in hand. I would read dozens of books each month when I was a child. Unfortunately, I don't read as much now as I did back then; there is too much other stuff that needs to be done. However, I do still enjoy good books.

Thank you! I like reading and so did my father. I'm hoping my son would have that trait. Reading can bring us to places and widen our knowledge.

I fully agree with you view
A child can learn and benefit greatly from being read to right from the day they are born. The benefit of reading aloud to your young child are simply endless.Reading helps to develop thinking and the imagination,it encourage children to make connections between the"heard" word and meaning "behind" word,it give them a positive foundation to pre-reading skills that aids the process of become independent readers in the future.
In a word ,go and grab some books from your local book shop or get into the habit of taking your young child to the library to choose his own, this can go a long way to helping your child become a proficient and confident reader later on in life.

I was reading and reading while I was pregnant with him. When he was a baby i read to him as well. I bought him books from the time he was 2 and I remember he would prefer to open his books than watched tv.
Now that he can read on his own, I want him to have that habit. He even goes to the school library to borrow books.
