A new survey suggest that the IE users are dumb. Do you agree? Quite a few articles are referring to the survey. One such link is found here: http://edition.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/07/29/internet.explorer.dumb/index.html What do you think?

What do I think? That maybe you shouldn't believe what you read online? And, that people who make those serveys usually don't have any facts. The fact remains refering to a group of people as "dumb" is insulting and a form of bulling. Anyone who actually believes in that is no better then the person who wrote it. I'll agree IE isn't the best web browser out there, but to go so far as to create a "survey" and refer to IE users as "dumb" now that's crossing the line, and you should not take things so seriously espically if it's demeaning like that.

It's just media hyperbole. The actual quote from the guy who ran the survey (further down in someone else's comment) is more sensible.

I agree. In fact, the very way of measuring IQ is also questionable. There are many types of intelligence and IQ is just one of the ways for measuring. Diversity is needed and one kind of smart may not necessary be better than other kind of smart.

The survey was a hoax. Check this story from CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/08/03/explorer.report.faked/index.html?iref=allsearch

Yup, Finally shown as a hoax - but it makes a good discussion.

I can't see why there would be any relation between someones choice of internet browser and their ability to talk or not talk.

Someone is always trying to draw the lines even when there is none.

It's a lot simpler than that, in my opinion, and has nothing to do with IE itself. Quite apart from IQ not really being an accurate measure of sense (as opposed to mathematical and logical reasoning), the simple fact is that IE comes with Windows. If someone is less smart, they're less likely to go hunting for an alternative: they'll accept the one they already have and use it because it's an easier option. More intelligence generally means a more questioning mind, which will look for alternatives. The survey would have suggested lower IQs use Chrome, if Chrome were delivered with Windows. Redundant, useless data, IMHO. (By the way, I don't use IE but that's because I don't like it and it makes my PC crash.)

Actually for somethings, IE works better. But you are right, sometimes it is much easier to use what is already there. Other times, it is because they don't know better.

No, not dumb, just rather not informed about the other options that are out there. Microsoft is king and I know that many people, their first browser was Internet Explorer. For a time, it does seem to be a good option, not so much with the later versions, but with the earlier versions, Internet Explorer is really something that was decent enough. I did hear many people stating that Internet Explorer is that Internet browser that you use to discover other Internet browsers. Then again, perhaps these people are satisfied with that browser. Everyone does have their own unique tastes, and they have not matched up to mine. Its been ages since I have used Internet Explorer with any regularity. People who still use it, well that's their problem I guess.

Uninformed or just don't bother.

It has been stated a few times. Yes, they use what is available. Surely everyone has had experience of IE usage :-) Besides, many users out there browse just a few sites and only a few minutes. But I can say that the IE users who have tons of toolbars (up to more than half of the IE window) are dumb =)

True, use the tools you are provided is much easier. Don't have to worry about searching for alternate tools especially if it works well.

Not dumb but not very well informed or they're afraid of change. IE was the first browser I had access to when I first discovered the internet and because I got used to it , I was a little nervous on trying another browser. I've heard some people still use IE because they think its the internet itself. Like if they install a new browser they'll have to remove IE and probably never get online again. I wouldn't say that's dumb. Just uninformed as I said before.

It's not the correct way of saying but you can say people who have less idea about Windows OS will certainly use the browser that comes with the OS. Dumb is a general way for describing someone's IQ and not knowing about computers does not mean that someone's IQ is less. If someone has not used Linux or Mac s/he can't be said dumb similarly, if one does not have much idea about Windows, s/he can not be dumb. They have named the topic like this to get the attention of people like you and me. That's it...it's all money making funda..

True. Even with my experience on computer, it is usually challenging when faced with a new environment.

It's really not nice to call people dumb no matter what category or study they base it to. I have to admit that IE is not the best browser in town, but those who use it are either new online or was not introduced yet to other browsers. Those types of people are not dumb, they just need re-education on online browsing and perhaps computers but if you ask them about other aspects aside from the techie stuff, I'm pretty sure people wouldn't call them dumb.

First of all, I want to restate what Leonard Howard (CEO of the company that held this survey) said, "I just want to make it clear that the report released by my company did not suggest that if you use IE means you have a low IQ, but what it really says is that if you have a low IQ then there are high chances that you use Internet Explorer" Well, he said it. The survey isn't intended to tell people that IE users are dumb :P By the way, I found that statement on http://www.aptiquant.com/news/aptiquant-threatened-with-a-lawsuit-by-loyal-internet-explorer-users (typed it from scratch, sigh, can't I copy paste for the link here in myLot? xD) ~check that link, the IE users fight back :)) And now, in my own opinion, I don't really like Internet Explorer though. I am designing my blog by myself, so I'm really experienced that older version of IE is highly incompatible with modern web standard, and it is really frustrating. So do the performance of page loading, IE isn't really the best one too ^^; So, if I happen see people using Internet Explorer, I may suggest him/her to try another browser instead. But really, it can't be helped, since IE comes in packet with Microsoft Windows OS. And Windows is the most popular OS in the world, so I can't blame people for using IE. And of course, I can't say that they are dumb xD. Maybe they just too lazy to try another browser, or maybe feel satisfied enough with IE's performance. Ah, everyone have their own favorite :)

Thanks for finding the reference. Often times I have to go back to IE as well when I have to use a site that will only work with IE. I don't think that makes me dumb.
